Private Homes house description
Built high on a hill and surrounded by coffee plantations and forest land, this 6,400 sq.ft. estate home is called Huelani which means 'Opening Up to Heaven.' Cathedral ceilings, full picture windows and French doors thoughout the home allow for dramatic, panoramic views of Kailuna-Kona's magnificent coastline and its legendary sunsets. Designed for privacy and luxurious comfort, this elegantly appointed home is decorated with traditional Hawaiian artwork. For its unique design, Huelani was featured in a Hawaiian architectural magazine.
Huelani is situated at an elevation of 1,300 feet, allowing for near perfect temperatures year round with no need for air conditioning or heating. Windows of the home can be left open year round to enjoy the fresh ocean breezes of Hawaii.
Professionally landscaped with lush tropical foliage on a spacious one-acre lot, Huelani's back yard features a large lap pool with a stunning dolphin waterfall. There is also a beautiful pond, which adjoins a private Jacuzzi spa surrounded by lush tropical foliage, giving the feeling you're in a rainforest. You may pick fresh fruit from the home's orchard for your breakfast. There are avocados, mangos, limes, lemons, oranges, kumquats, and banana trees.
Located in a gated community, Huelani is in a very quiet and private neighborhood. For nature-lovers, there are hiking trails nearby, about a 3-4 minute drive from the house up on Koloko drive.
From the front entrance of the home, you enter the spacious living room which features 24-foot high ceilings, native Koa wood floors, swivel bucket chairs and comfortable sofas for entertaining or simply napping!
This lovely home features one bedroom downstairs with a queen bed and three upstairs (all king beds). One of the bedrooms upstairs is quite large and is like an apartment with a private entrance. It also has a large couch for an extra person to sleep. There are three couches downstairs for guests to sleep on as well. We also have a air mattress available. The linens and the beds are very comfortable and can be considered high quality.
There are many dining areas of the home. Besides the formal dining area, there is an informal eating area near the kitchen. There is a large dining table by the pool. The lanai (which is totally screened in) also features a dining table.
Though far above the humidity of the beach areas and the noise of cars and tourists, the home is a short drive to the town of Kona where there are great restaurants and many things to do. The home is also close to the beach and the airport.
This lovely estate home would be perfect for a honeymoon, family reunion or couples retreat. Huelani would also be suitable for a family vacation or a couple taking an extended vacation.
When you arrive at Huelani, you may find the pantry already stocked with groceries. Our caretaker will shop and provide other services at a nominal charge. Just let her know what services you would like when you contact her before your arrival. (You can work out the charges with her.)
We also can refer you to a chef for cooking services too. Just let us know when you book.
For the rate charged, Huelani is a beautiful value. You will enjoy its spaciousness, privacy, and the unique ambiance of this special estate home.

Wonderful Wedding Location
Wonderful Wedding Location
We rented this home for a week and were married in the back yard. It was perfect for us and a beautiful location. The elevation of the home was great as the beach was hot and humid and this was cooler and dryer. We blended a family and the immediate family stayed with us at the house. We didn't even buy flowers as the grounds were immaculate and didn't need any more decoration. The bedrooms are spacious and have their own full bath. We had 9 guests (1 too many for the accomocation) 8 is perfect if you want everyone to have a private bedroom. The overall layout of the house is wondeful and very inviting. We had 30 guests for the wedding and had plenty of room. I would highly recommend this home. We also hired Shelly and her son to help the day of the wedding...they were absolutely the best! If you want a smooth event and the best hostess and host - I would recommend them with the utmost confidence. We will be back and loved all 7 days. When we had a small issue Shelly was available to get it fixed as soon as possible. Thank you Huelani House for great memories and a wonderful stay.

We spent 10 days at this magnificent home. It offered everything imaginable you could ever want. The home and grounds are beautiful but yet extremely comfortable. It is located very close to Kona and the beach (which was easy to get to and beautifully sunny even when it was cloudy at the house elevation). Plenty of room for everyone to have some space. It made our trip that much more memorable. Working with Shelly and Leslie made the logistics very easy as well. We highly recommend this home.

Wedding In Paradise
Wedding In Paradise
The home was as advertised with only one pool problem that the owner is addressing. You will never find a more beautiful place to stay than Huelani. It comes with an absolutely gorgeous jacuzzi spa in the grotto with a waterfall next to it. We held a small wedding there and we could not have picked a better place in Hawaii to have the wedding. The background scenery was made for photography and everything is there you would need to prepare for a wedding. What makes this home stand out above the rest is Leslie, who is the booking agent, and Shelly, a wonderful and helpful caretaker. Leslie is great to work with when booking and is extremely responsive at communicating information. Shelly, the off-site caretaker, will do all she can to make your stay a success. She even brought us a large bunch of local bananas to eat. If you have any problem while there she will do her best to address it very quickly. The kitchen is well stocked with all the items you will need other than fresh produce and food. Highway 190 is just above the subdivision and will drop you directly into Kona and the shopping areas. We plan to return again and enjoy this quiet and private estate. Mahalo to the owner for allowing us to stay there.

Manager response: We are glad you enjoyed Huelani. Yes, it's perfect for weddings and other special events, but also suitable for vacationing families and couples. With its beautiful grounds, spaciousness and unique features like the tropical spa and orchard, this home has it all! We are working at making sure the pool is in top condition at all times. We always appreciate constructive feedback.
So glad we found this lovely home!!
So glad we found this lovely home!!
We have just returned from our holiday and have to say that we COMPLETELY enjoyed ourselves. Staying at this gorgeous home was the highlight! It was so relaxing to be in such beautiful surroundings! We were two couples and two children. Each couple had their own room and each child had their own room - which were large and beautiful. Each room has it's own bath except the bonus room, but there is one just down the stairs - so I think that counts :-) The beds and furniture were very comfortable and clean and the kitchen was large enough for 4 people to cook in and still have plenty of room. The house is huge and the simple, elegant decor creates a feeling of peace and serenity. The highlight is definately the beautiful pool, patio, and yard. The hot tub is tucked in a gorgeous grotto with it's own waterfall that cascades into a little creek that grugles past the hot tub to fill a small pond. All of this looks completely natural and it's so relaxing and special. Except for people to serve us, it was like being at a five star resort (without the annoying 600 other guests ;-) It felt very safe to be in this beautiful gated community. There are about 25 luxury houses on one acre lots - plenty of space for privacy. We were there for 10 days and didn't see a single neighbour -even went for a walk - just heard the occasional car drive by and sometimes a dog would bark. The view of the ocean is spectacular! We watched the sunset every evening from the pool patio - it quickly became our favorite ritual. The kids could run around the huge yard for as long as they wanted. There were fruit trees just down the hill in the yard, and we managed to pick some avacadoes, oranges, lemons, and limes. (The bananas weren't quite ready for us.) It was an easy drive to Costco (less than 10 mins) and Kona (less than 15 mins). At an elevation of 1500 ft, it was the perfect location to escape the heat of the lowlands. The kitchen was well stocked with salt, pepper, olive oil, vinegars, and other staples. The laundry room had great HE front load washer and dryer - and there was lots of laundry soap, toilet paper, paper towells, bath towells, beach towells, etc. It was so easy to throw a load of towells in after the beach There was so many great things about this house, that I could write an essay - the 20ft ceilings in the LR, the wall of windows/french doors between the LR and the patio, the views from every room in the house.....it's perfect for a wedding!

Lovely Very Private Home
Lovely Very Private Home
This house was perfect for our needs, lots of rest and quiet. We used the house as a base for exploring other parts of the island. My kids loved the pool and spa. The listing is accurate for the house but not the neighborhood. This house is in a well developed residential community with neighbors on all sides. Gate access was easy and convenient. There were no hiking trails from the house into the forest. The house is much better than the photos show. The property was typically maintained by a maid service (once over lightly but no deep cleaning). The sheets and bathrooms were very clean. Beds were really comfortable. Several light bulbs were burned out, pool lights did not work. A few minor plumbing problems. About half the tiki torches in the garden didn't work. Outdoor grill only 3 of the 4 burners worked, the other one was completely corroded. The CD player did not work or was disconnected. We cooked the whole time we were there. The kitchen is well stocked with high quality cooking equipment. The local property agent was very helpful in doing some preliminary shopping for us, directions, organizing a plumber, even e-mailed a couple of times to make sure we were having a good time. I would definitely recommend this property to a friend or relative. The attractions we saw were not really nearby (Pololu beach, Waipio valley and Volcanoes National Park). We went on Blue Hawaii Helicopter Tours ( http://www.bluehawaiian.com/bigisland/ )which was pricey but a good tour with a good pilot who was great with kids. It is about 4 miles to the grocery store and about 7 miles to the urgent care center from the house.

Manager response: Huelani is in a beautiful gated community with other lovely estate homes on very large lots. The neighbors are not close at all, and the home and its lush tropical grounds are private and quiet. There are hiking trails, only about a 3-4 minute drive from the house up on Koloko Drive. The caretaker can provide further directions. Huelani is kept as clean as possible. With a home as large as Huelani, our three-person cleaning staff typically spends four hours cleaning between rentals --12 hours total. The tiki torches and bulbs have been replaced and would have been immediately if the rental guest told the caretaker. That's why we have a caretaker! The CD player works with an Ipod (now there are instructions). We are replacing the grill. The plumber had to be called because there was something caught in a drainpipe, which happens when you rent a home. And yes, Huelani is even more gorgeous when you see it in person than what the photos and video depict. Come for a visit and you'll see for yourself!

Year Purchased: 2007
About: I am the founder and CEO of a media advertising company. I bought my Kona home as a second home to escape from the mainland's hustle and bustle.
Why Private Homes:
I looked at other homes before I bought this one, but I didn't care for the heat and humidity of the beach areas. Being at a high elevation, you can open your windows year-round and enjoy the fresh Hawaiian breezes. I also loved the spaciousness of this home and the large one-acre lot!
The Unique Benefits at this House:
With so much open space surrounding my home and few neighbors, there is a tranquility here and a 'Four Seasons resort' feeling up on the hill above everything. It seems like you're far removed from everything, but everything is close by at your fingertips, just a short drive away when you want anything. Staying here is the best of both worlds!
