Northwoods Fishing & Hunting Getaway

This is a rustic cedar log cabin that has most of the amenities of home. Power is provided off-grid by solar panels with backup generator. The view from the front window wall and deck is the beautiful expansive northwoods and overlooks a semi-private lake that holds trophy sized northern pike and walleye as well as other warm water species of fish. The cabin is heated by a propane fireplace. The open great room has vaulted ceilings to compliment the cedar log wall construction. Use of boat and motor, and a canoe, are part of the package. A modern dock provides boat moorage and a relaxing place to view sunsets and enjoy the clear water of Porter Lake. Additional fishing and water recreation is available at nearby Cable Lake, which offers a public boat landing.
In addition to fishing, a network of gravel and two-track roads provide access to miles of potential ORV use, hiking, mountain biking, wildlife viewing, bird watching, fall color touring, and hunting. The area is known to be some of the best habitat for moose in Michigan. Bald eagles are commonly seen from the cabin deck and loons are known to nest on the lake. Waterfowl, white tail deer, grouse, and black bear are native to the area and abundant.

this was by far the best setting for a cabin that we have stayed in with our dogs and the cabin was perfect for our needs. You get the best of both worlds, your drive down a gravel winding road is about 9 miles off the main road. The cabin is sitting up above / on the lake with only a handfull of homes yet within reasonable distance to town considering. The water is shallow for quite some distance but rocky bottom so I wore sport flip flops (non slip). I made sure to bring 50' long leads for the dogs so they could retrieve tennis balls. We took a day trip to the Porcupine Mountains and Lake Superior and lots of local hikes Canyon Falls etc. Sitting on the porch with that view, a fire going and sipping some wine was the ideal end to any day. Julie and Jim - thank you for the hospitality! Hope to see you next yearRecommended for: Sightseeing, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

We have stayed in a couple of other cabins in MI & WI, and this one was by far our favorite. It was beautiful and very clean and well kept. I cannot say enough about the views from the windows and deck. We loved waking up in the loft and opening our eyes to the beautiful views -- a great way to start the day. Also loved sipping coffee on the deck in the morning - we saw lots of wildlife, and it is so peaceful! There is also a screened in porch with patio furniture you can use (attached to an outbuilding) that is not mentioned above. It was great when we needed some shade or when it was wet outside after it rained one night. If you are looking for secluded, this is the place for you. We saw a couple of other boats on the lake during the week, but other than that it was like we were the only people on the whole lake. The fishing was great, and also you could easily catch crayfish off the dock which our 6 year old loved. We also had our dog with us, and she would've played in the water all day if we let her. The dock looked brand new, and there was also a small sandy area near the dock where you could wade into the water. The bottom is quite rocky, and a bit slippery, but with water shoes we were fine. I wouldn't really recommend this as a swimming beach, but even without that we found plenty to do at the lake (and we did spend a lot of time wading in the water). In fact, we had originally planned a few day trips, but we ended up canceling most of them because we were having so much fun at the cabin that we just hung out there most of the week. The cabin is quite remote - 20 minutes of winding gravel road to get there. We enjoyed it and felt it added to the adventure of it, but something to be aware of. Also, just fyi, we have AT&T and we got no service at the cabin. This is truly the perfect place for quality time with family - we enjoyed our time there very much. FYI if you’re interested, some of the nearby attractions (by nearby I mean <1.5 hours): Canyon Falls, Hilltop Restaurant, Bishop Baraga Shrine, Agate Falls, Bond Falls, Tibbets Falls, Lake Superior… I highly recommend this cabin, and hope to make it back up there again myself.Did you find this review helpful? Wow, now that we think about it, Wow! What a beautiful place, with a spectacular view of Porter Lake. Everything that you could want for a quiet get-away. Quiet, peaceful mornings, great fishing, and wildlife of all kinds. There are a few dusty, bumpy roads to get there, but it’s all worth it. Jim & Julie are perfect hosts. Julie visited in the middle of the week to make sure all was well, and came with a plate of fresh baked brownies. Yum! The boat with motor and gas, and the canoe are very nice. The cabin has received lots of loving care, and is equipped with everything you might need. Anyone wanting a peaceful place to spend a vacation in the U.P., this is it. I’ve been coming to this area for many years, as my dad started coming here in the early 1940’s. It’s never been a disappointment. This is a first time visit for my wife, Sandy, and she loved it. I might add that our cat, Precious, loved the cabin, too. Rick & Sandy Kokomo, IndianaDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My family and I were pleasantly surprised with this beautiful setting and home. The cabin itself was just perfect for our needs. Even though it is off-grid, not once did we need the back-up generator. It had all of the modern conveniences to make life easier, microwave, fridge, stove, shower etc. We found the cabin to be very clean and comfy. The deck was our favorite hang out, the view was breathtaking! The walk down to the dock area was steep but nothing that the average person could not handle. Once to the water a nice, new dock was to be found. The kids had a great time swimming and I did not have to worry about them in the water-they could walk out about 40 yards before the water was getting too deep. It was a bit rocky so aqua socks would be needed. We spent many hours on the trails biking around and could go for a long way in the perfect wilderness. The owners of the cabin Jim and Julie stopped by to say hi and see if we were getting along okay. That visit was so nice, we caught up on the good fishing spots and other tips for the area. The boys enjoyed the fishing and spent many hours out on the lake trying for the "big one". If you really want to disconnect from the everyday, no TV, cell phone - this is it. We spent every night around the campfire, played cards and cribbage and not once did our kids say they missed their phones, computer or tv. It was perfect for us! Thank you Jim & Julie for sharing! We are already making plans to stay here next year.Recommended for: Families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

The cottage is immaculate, the woods are majestic and the view is priceless. Pictures simply cannot capture the view from the deck overlooking Porter Lake. We stayed a week and enjoyed everything the woods and the lake had to offer. The lake is a very large and very private lake with known reputation for excellent fishing. The cabin is cozy, comfortable and meticulously maintained. The owners are wonderful people and so helpful and easily available. Overall, and ideal vacation spot. I'd recommend it to anyone...as long as it's not the same week I want next year.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

I can't say enough about this place. The pictures just don't do it justice. The view from the deck is breathtaking. There's no one else around (literally - we saw no people, and only a couple of small boats the entire week), and the quiet, peaceful surrounding are wonderful. The cabin is beautiful, and very modern. The kitchen has everything you need - we cooked a roast in the oven, used the microwave several times, toasted bagels, etc. Oh, and don't fret about the solar power - you won't even know it's there. Everything just works. Jim and Julie are perfect hosts - the cabin was spotless, the kitchen has every conceivable utensil you could want, sheets, pillows, towels, garbage bags - you name it, it's there. You should be able to show up with food, clothes, and fishing equipment and be set for the week. They stopped in to visit mid-week, brought us a couple of things we needed - and a plate of fresh brownies! About the only thing I'd warn potential renters about is the (almost) complete lack of access to technology. I could squeak out a weak cell signal right near the edge of the lake, but other than that, there's no phone, no TV reception, no Internet. I happen to think that was a blessing, but others might go into Internet withdrawal. :) Seriously, for a beautiful, quiet, comfortable getaway, you can't beat this place. I've already got my request in for 2012.Recommended for: Pet owners, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.

The cabin is an ideal destination for those looking for complete quiet and a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It's quite remote and probably not for everyone, but it's perfect for those looking to see the natural beauty of the UP at its best. In addition, Jim and Julie are wonderful people and know a lot about the area around the cabin. The fishing was good, and we saw a lot of loons and a couple of bald eagles.Recommended for: Families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.

Stayed here in November. This place is every bit as nice as it is described. Actually, i think they underrated it a bit...it was much nicer than we were expecting and the pictures do not do it justice.I have stayed all over the upper peninsula and if you want to get away from it all....this is the place. You will also probably not find another person as familiar with the western UP as Jim. We will be back for sure!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.

My husband and I stayed here for a week in September and loved it.....what a beautiful place! The cabin is very clean and comfortable. The view from the many windows in the house is really beautiful, especially with the fall colors! It is very remote and so peaceful. We even saw the resident Bald Eagles perching in a tree very close to the house. My husband was the lucky one to see a Moose one day while he was hunting for Grouse. Even our dog Ally loved it! The caretakers Julie and Jim were so nice and accommodating. They even come by to visit midweek to bring any needed supplies and to make sure everything is OK. If you like beautiful views, quiet, and a remote setting this place is for you! They have pretty much everything you need...just bring your food and drink and you will be all set for a relaxing vacation!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, age 55+.
