Pontlevoy cottage description
Sunny and historic, Abbey Cottage has overlooked the spires and slate rooftops of romantic Pontlevoy for almost half a millennium. Built with the rampart of Pontlevoy's magnificent 1000 year old Abbey as its back wall, Abbey Cottage is tucked into its own gated garden, just steps away from the shops, cafes, and restaurant of a quaint village where photographers, artists, design mavens and creative leaders have had second homes for centuries.
Enjoy this professor's cottage--with books in several languages to read, DVD's in abundance and a kitted out kitchen that lacks nothing you might need to cook and eat with gusto--and live the Loire valley lifestyle on a vacation you will never forget.
Explore the ancient village of Pontlevoy on foot and then expand your visit to take in the greatest chateaux of Europe--Chenonceau, Cheverny, Chambord, Blois and Amboise--via an easy bike ride or even easier car trip of 10- 15 minutes. As you hike, bike and drive through the rolling hills and vineyard landscape surrounding Pontlevoy and Abbey Cottage, find the wines you like best and bring them home to sample in your private garden or on your charming patio, as the sun lies down over the pitched roofs of Pontlevoy and another day of your holiday ends.
An international community of Francophiles will surround you on your stay, friendly enough to recognize you after a few days and likely to invite you for an appero at the charming Place du College's Cafe Le Commerce, where Julien and Carol tend bar and serve lovely lunches, while they also dole out local advice and tourist options.
Will you take home some of the local goat cheese, made in Pontlevoy and considered among the best in France? Will you picnic under The Abbey of Pontlevoy's famous cedar tree (planted in 1776), together with American, British an EU interns who come each summer to help run The Abbey and bring their own excitement and dynamism to any stay at Abbey Cottage?
Will you find the mysterious 'midnight stone' just on the edge of town, using your flashlights only, as you do what curious monks and generations of students at The Abbey have done, while you wonder about the Druid past of this stone? Will you go just through the vineyards on your bike, down toward the stately Cher River, to see the Roman settlement left behind at Thesee?
Or make market Friday in Montrichard--5 minutes by car--your goal for one morning, as you detour to the see the massive ruins of its castle overlooking the Cher River? Before returning to Abbey Cottage to ready your own appero. So that you can host some of the polyglot locals you have met at Abbey Cottage and say farewell for another year?
Locals will tell you that nowhere is it more true than in Pontelvoy that no one really leaves here, ever. They just go other places for awhile and return, later. So it is with Abbey Cottage. You who have stayed here know well enough: you have come and you return to stay again with family and friends. Inside the 500 year old stones that make it cozy here, safe, romantic and special.

A wonderful place to stay with lots of happy memories
A wonderful place to stay with lots of happy memories
Four of us stayed in Pontlevoy for four nights and really enjoyed this old stone cottage that dates back to the time when Richlieu (later, Cardinal Richlieu) was Abbot of the monastery. The living and sleeping spaces were clean, bright and very comfortable. Since it was a beautiful September, we used the outside decks and fountain a lot, enjoying the sound of the water falling in the fountain and the view of Pontlevoy's rooftops. Susan and Michael, the cottage caretakers, were very kind and helpful to us during the stay. Susan even did laundry for us since the cottage's washer & dryer were out of commission and are on their list of improvements for the place. Would I return to Pontlevoy and stay at the cottage again? Definitely. Pontlevoy is so close to major attractions such as Amboise (Francois I and Leonard da Vinci), Chenonceaux, Chambord, Blois and many more beautiful locations. And again, Susan and Michael truly made it a wonderful experience. I highly recommend the cottage.

My husband and I just returned from a fabulous trip to France that included four lovely nights in the Abbey Cottage. This property has been completely renovated by it's new caretakers, Susan and Michael and these two have paid attention to every last detail. We've been renting VRBO's for years and have never felt more safe and comfortable in a VRBO home. The cottage was spotlessly clean, the brand new bed and linens were of good quality and very comfortable, the kitchen and bath were with spices, tea, coffee, sugar and flour, a bottle of local wine, juice, milk, butter and jam! It was truly like staying in my own home. Pontlevoy is only a short drive from larger towns and all of the lovely chateau of the Loire Valley. Michael and Susan had great restaurant suggestions, helped us rent bicycles and at the same time, they respected our privacy. Every VRBO owner would be delighted to have a couple such as Michael and Susan for caretakers of their properties. Don't miss the chance to immerse yourself in the charm and ambiance of the Loire Valley at the Abbey Cottage in Pontlevoy! We will definitely be back soon!

Worst Rental Ever!
Worst Rental Ever!
I had such high hopes for this place. It was in a perfect location and pictures of the outside were charming. However in all my years of renting, this was by far the worst. The person who was to meet us with the keys was a no show, which left us wondering around the village, trying to find someone who might know her. Then, when we finally got in, the queen sized bed was made with dingy single sheets and a single duvet. We found the old, mismatched towels still wet in the dryer, and the entire cottage needed a good cleaning, particularly the bathroom. The owners belongings (clothes such as old tee shirts) and toiletries, were strewn about. After complaining, the owner agreed to give us a discount, I spent several hours cleaning, and we decided to make the best of it. However the final straw was when I tried to cook our first dinner. In the middle of cooking the stove ran out of butane and the owner had not provided a spare canister. The store was closed and dinner was ruined. The next morning my husband disconnected the empty, took it back to the store, bought a new one and connected it, thinking that surely the owner would reimburse us for the cost. He refused, writing that we should not expect it "to be the Hilton." So much for the advertised fully equipped kitchen! Do not be fooled by the owner's chatty palaver. Book here only if you want to experience (or re-experience) what it might be like to live in a student hovel. I took pictures in order to document this place, but unfortunately the sight does not allow for posting. AS they say, a picture is worth a thousand words!

Owner response: In five years of renting Abbey Cottage, our guests have almost always universally praised the home, the garden, the setting and their experience. We have literally never had a negative experience with any of our clients before, which couldn't be fully resolved right away, on the ground. Our caretakers are responsive and helpful to the nth degree. Previous guests have used Bob, Nora, and Hannah to help find a pediatrician. To get a pet to the vet. To find the best wines and the best bike routes. Twice in five years we have had guests complain. In each instance, my wife and I have worked diligently to right even a perceived wrong, while our caretakers have rolled up their sleeves to do the same. The reviewer whose scathing note appears above neglected to mention three things that would have offered some valuable context to her complaint: 1) our normal caretaker had been called out of town on a family emergency on their arrival day, when our backup caretaker was hit with car trouble in the next town; 2) We gave the client her money back on two nights of her stay and encouraged her to stay gratis for the rest of the week; 3) We treated her to a 75 Euro dinner at one of the region's best restaurants with our compliments.
Lots of charm and great location
Lots of charm and great location
My husband, adult daughter and I stayed at Abbey Cottage for six wonderful days in May 2011. The cottage is just as cute and charming as it appears in the photos. Dead-silent at night despite it being in the heart of the village. We especially enjoyed the walled garden, which offers complete privacy. It is so lush and peaceful, especially with the fountain flowing and the wind chimes chiming. What a relaxing spot for drinking Kir Royals or lunching on sandwiches and pastries bought at the bakery about half-a-minute's walk up the street. Pontlevoy is centrally located for visiting the best of the chateaux. We also spent a pleasant morning exploring the ancient abbey, for which the cottage is named. The town of MontRichard is just a few minutes' drive away and has a good selection of wonderful restaurants, shops, and beautiful riverside scenery. In the village of Pontlevoy itself, be sure to dine at the cooking school. We had a FABULOUS meal, very elegant, and not as expensive as we'd feared. You can walk to it from the cottage. After tiring days visiting the chateaux (don't miss the amazing gardens at Villandry), it felt great to come "home" through rural scenery to the peace and quiet of Pontlevoy. Our stay here was perfect in every way.

Owner response: We are so pleased to hear that Abbey Cottage worked this well for your holiday! We hope that you three can return again another time. We are THRILLED that the new garden and fountain are working this kind of magic! Cheers, Doug

Abbey Cottage stay August 30, 2010 - September 1, 2010
My husband and I stayed at the Abbey Cottage from August 30th- September 1st. We went to Ireland, France and Italy on our trip and one of the major highlights was staying at the Abbey Cottage in Pontlevoy. Doug and Gabe (person who got us settled into the cottage) were so easy and wonderful to work with! The cottage is beautiful! It has been completely remodeled to have all of the modern conveniences but still has the character and charm of a cottage built hundreds of years ago. The kitchen and living room are on the second level. There are many windows which makes the cottage sunny and airy! The large bedroom with a desk and sitting area are located on the first level (with french doors that go out to the courtyard). The bathroom has been completely remodeled (within the last few years) and it is very nice. There is also a loft (sleeping area) off of the living room. We loved going to the bakery in the mornings (it is about a 15 step walk from the cottage) and just wandering around the town. Everyone in the town was so kind and friendly. It was also really nice to have the car (BMW) to use. It is a manual (stick shift) and in great condition. We went down to Chateau de Chenonceau in the Loire Valley for a half day! It was a very easy and scenic drive. All of the little towns are so picturesque. I highly recommend taking the drive. I definitely recommend staying at the Abbey Cottage. My husband and I dream of going back someday!

About the owner: I am Professor of French and European history and Director of The Abbey Program for my university in the USA.
Why the Owner Chose Pontlevoy:
I wanted to have an historic and charming cottage that I could fully renovate and use as my own place to live comfortably during the winter and spring each year when I live in France and work for my university. I love the fact that Abbey Cottage is so easy to get to from Paris and CDG airport, just as I love its location in the center of a quaint and quiet town that has groceries, a great cafe, organic wines just down the street, terrific local cheese and superb local cafe and bar. The fact that the local restaurant is Michelin quality was another big plus to this location. Mostly, though, I fell in love with Abbey Cottage because of its history and the fact that it so light, sunny and charming.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
The sound of doves every afternoon are a delight from the 8 large windows framing either side of Abbey Cottage. So is the soft peel of The Abbey of Pontlevoy's bells each morning, as the day's arrival and offer of excitement and charm gets graciously announced. I have worked and lived in Pontlevoy for more than 10 years and can personally recommend to all renters what to do, who to meet if any help is required and where to eat and go.
