Well, I'm so sorry our stay is over. Everything has grown so much. Gordon and I love staying with Matt and Rose. They bend over backward to make sure our stay is wonderful. Now, since they have planted all these edible plants...and with the eggs from "the girls", you hardly have to shop for food! As usual, the accommodations are excellent, views are beautiful, and the birds!!! What a way to wake up! Love it ! Thank you so much Matt and Rose, we just love visiting Hawaii and staying with you. The beach is minutes away, and Waimea is minutes away!! We were going to go out for dinner, but just stayed in because...why go out when you have perfection at home!!! Mahalo...<3Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

We just returned from a three week stay at Lokilani Hale and had a wonderfully relaxing visit. The location is perfect for a retreat with the best beaches on the island minutes away and the convenience of groceries and restaurants just up the hill in Waimea. Everything is just as it appears on the website but better. We enjoyed just hanging out in the evenings watching the sunsets from the lanai and the evening star gazing was amazing! Matt was a gracious host and treated us to fresh papaya from the garden and farm fresh eggs. We appreciated being able to save our kitchen scraps to feed the chickens and that there was recycling available. Our last day we drove up to Mauna Kea for the sunrise which was beautiful and our other highlights were night diving with the manta rays and kayaking out to Captain Cook Monument with a pod of spinner dolphins. We loved everything about the big island and hopefully can return soon for another visit. Thank you Matt and Rose for sharing your piece of paradise with us!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Just returned from a very pleasant stay at this lovely home. Matt is an extremely gracious host and did everything possible to make my stay as pleasant and enjoyable as possible. The home is as lovely as it appears in the pictures. It's also ideally located: on the warm, sunny side of the island; away from the Kona and Waikola tourist crowds, and peaceful and secluded; yet just a short hop to the two best beaches in Hawaii--Hapuna and Mauna Kea--and also the scenic country town of Waimea. Loved my time here!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

I'd love to give this house a 5! The owners are very nice and generous people. The location is great for accessing the amenities of Waimea and the beaches down the hill. The climate at the top edge of the desert is pleasantly warm and dry. It's quiet and peaceful, with expansive views. My concern involves the floor plan, and the problems it would impose for two couples, or a couple with older children. The house was obviously set up to have a bedroom at one end, a large kitchen in the middle, and a large living room at the other end, with a bathroom behind it. However, due to the presence of a huge copper trophy bathtub, that arrangement is totally scrambled. Now, the bedroom is the kitchen, but it's still lit like a bedroom. The limited area means a nonfunctional total of 6 sq ft of counter space, so toasters, coffee maker, microwave, etc are stored in what should be a closet. If you lug out the microwave, it literally eats up all available counter space! Since the refrigerator is in the only other closet, the house has no closets. No drawers, either. The kitchen space in the center of the house is now a gigantic bathroom, and its position at the house's hub means that going from the kitchen to the living room and from either to the patio involves transiting the bathroom! In the middle of this space is a giant copper tub that comes thigh-high on a 6' man. To practice getting in, just step into your kitchen sink! Now imagine that the bottom of the sink reaches the ground, and no step is provided to get in! Or out. Since the bedroom is now the kitchen, the living room contains a large 4-poster bed, which leaves room for only two chairs, set at a painful angle to a bolted-down TV. The extra bedroom is small, not really suitable for a couple. For my wife and I, the idiosyncrasies of the design were bearable, although working in the kitchen was painful. A couple with a small child or two would be OK. For two couples, though, the inevitable privacy and space issues could become more than annoying. If only the bedroom were the bedroom, and the spacious central room leading outside functioned as a big open kitchen, with the tub and bath moved to the second bedroom. With the living room fitted out with a big hide-a-bed couch, this house would be so much more comfortable and practical. For a couple, the positives far, far outweigh the negatives, and we had a good stay. But as you add people and those people require space and privacy, beware!Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Thank you for your comments, we are always looking for ways to improve our place. We are adding more counter space to the kitchen so all the extra appliances will be ready to use.The large flat screen TV is not bolted down, just plastic on wood. This unique space is a vacation rental, not a tract house.

We spent the first half of our week on Oahu, which was beautiful but terribly crowded and hard to navigate. We arrived in Kamuela to Matt's lovely property about sunset and were just delighted with the space, the furnishings and the surroundings. We had privacy, a gorgeous view, and wonderful skies especially at night. Our only regret was that we didn't go straight to Waimea when we arrived in Hawaii. The property is very quiet, but there's easy access to Waimea and Kona for food, dining and fun. The Saddle Road, which runs down the middle of the Big Island, is easy to get to from the house. It's easiest to come into the Kona airport, and I definitely recommend an entire week or more, if you can manage it. We absolutely loved this place, and Matt was really good to work with on the arrangements - very warm and welcoming. Highly recommended!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Thanks to Matt and Rose and their unique garden cottages, my daughter and I had a relaxing time in Waimea. One night, we picked basil and tomatoes and were given eggplants by Rose. We cooked our own pasta dinner with the veggies. A special place.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Logistics for our stay were handled very efficiently and we had no trouble getting in even with a rather late arrival. The rental unit and grounds were as expected from the property description. The unit was clean and well maintained. We were looking for a quiet place since this was a working trip and we were on a partial night schedule. Compared to other resorts and condos you don't have to put up with the sounds of perpetual lawn maintenance equipment. This place is nicely placed between Waimea (Kamuela) and the coast, making it easy to get to either. Nice neighborhood for walking around to get nice views of Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, and to see the Sun set into the ocean. Perhaps the only surprise was the bathroom in the 2-bedroom unit. It's a very modern and open design that is central to the unit and works best with people that can appreciate a somewhat public bathing area. Had we been better informed it would not have affected our choice of staying there but it's a design that makes a bit more sense for a 1-bedroom honeymoon style unit. I would definitely recommend this property to friends and relatives and would definitely consider coming back whether on a working trip or pure vacation. I think the best part of the place is the west-facing patio that overlooks the garden. It's a very nice spot to start your day.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, romantic getaway.

This is a wonderful, private cottage that helped us escape from the intensities of every day life. We are a family of 4 and even our teenager enjoyed the relaxation and beautiful garden. There's no noise and the stars at night are like nothing we saw before. It's also close to many beatiful beaches and restaurants. We could go swimming and snorkeling every day, just within a 10-15 min drive. Matthew was very hospitable and even helped our kids crack open a fresh coconut right off one of his trees! We stayed there for 2 weeks and that's where we'll stay again on our next Hawaii visit!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

My husband and I stayed here to watch the transit of Venus during our vacation on the Big Island. This cottage was amazing. Plenty of room, very comfortable. Very peaceful and beautiful grounds. The night sky is great for stargazing. The location is great. Many great must see places a short or uncomplicated drive away. You can see some of the observatories on the peak of Mauna Kea from the property !! We stayed at 3 different places during our visit to the Big Island, this was our favorite. In fact, I would like to *live* here ! Thanks Matt for a wonderful stay, great advice, great directions, great EVERYTHING. A place I highly recommend.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway.
