'I have everything I need and want right here'. This quote was made by an avid Sportsman guest and describes the Lodge and surrounding area perfectly. If you love the outdoors you will love staying with us.
If you haven't visited the Dolores area you haven't visited Colorado. There's something for everyone, no matter what season.
Spring: Beginning in late April and May the trees sprout their new leaves, elk and deer are everywhere (often with their babies) and the wildflowers bloom.
Summer: A great time for a family vacation with all the activities Southwest Colorado has to offer. The hummingbirds arrive and don't leave until September 1st. There's a 'swimming hole' in the Dolores River directly below the lodge for kids and adults alike to enjoy. Bring your fishing pole too!
Fall: The BEST time of year. The weather is phenomenal, the hunting and fishing are in full swing, and the mountains are breathtaking when the aspens turn brilliant yellow. One couldn't ask for more outdoor opportunities or beauty.
Winter: Skiing, snowmobiling and just a great time to read a book near a cozy fire.
Bear Creek Mountain Lodge is the perfect place any time of the year...whether you have a party of four or fourteen. The lodge is a beautiful spacious family-owned newly remodeled cabin on 14 acres bordered by National Forest. It is like having your own private National Park right outside the back door. You can hike, hunt and fish without using your vehicle. Our guests have loved the fact that they can get their nature 'fix' without leaving the property.... but with plenty of National Forest Access roads to hike, ATV or even drive in your family car (4-Wheel drive is not necessary). If you want more structured excitement, Telluride is up the road and Cortez (with Mesa Verde) and Durango (with rafting, train rides and more) are just down the road. Unlike other properties in the area, the lodge is NOT listed for sale.
Bear Creek Mountain Lodge is a beautiful spacious family-owned newly remodeled cabin with six bedrooms (3 on the main level and three upstairs; 3 kings, 2 queens, 4 twins), 2 fully stocked kitchens, 3.5 bath including one with a whirlpool tub, an extremely comfortable living room with fireplace, a sunny dining room and family room along with a large mud room with wood burning stove. All the amenities you could want are here: Wireless and DSL internet, cable TV(s), two washers and dryers, a second story deck for viewing the elk and deer, games, books and so much more.
Why the Owner Chose Dolores: This has been our family home for forty years. When mom and dad left the house to us we wanted to be able to keep it in the family for future generations. The location is second to none. This is a uniquely beautiful environment. Every time we are there we feel like 'Heidi' in the classic children's story....it is that beautiful!
The Unique Benefits of this Lodge: The lodge is so comfortable and family friendly. We love going up on the deck at night with a spotlight and seeing elk and deer close by. There are wonderful hunting opportunities right up the hill from the house. It is very secluded with only another family member's house in view, but yet it is an easy drive to Telluride, Durango, Cortez, even Moab. The summer days are warm and the nights are cool. No air conditioning needed. And the stars....millions of them!!

We rented both properties and were able to accommodate 6 families between them very comfortably. The scenery was beautiful and it was so nice to have such a large space to ourselves. We had plenty to do at the cabin and within an hour or so drive we explored a lot of great places...Mesa Verde, Cortez, Anasazi Heritage Center, Canyon of the Ancients, and Telluride. The accommodations were very comfortable and we all loved the cozy cabin feeling. Barb and Vincenzo were always available and eager to help with anything and answer questions. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a lovely place to stay while enjoying the outdoors in Colorado.Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

Family Elk Hunting Trip
Family Elk Hunting Trip

Our party consisted of four hunters and four other family members staying in the Lodge, plus two more family members staying at Priest Gulch RV Campground just two miles away. The Lodge was our base camp, mid-day rendevous, restaurant, lounge and bunkhouse all wrapped into one beautiful home away from home. The owners accommodated our group in every way we could have wanted. Our hunting party had initially planned to "rough it" by camping in the National Forest, thinking we could save even more money on our public land, self-guided, first time elk hunting trip. When we considered the extra fuel cost of towing an RV from the east coast, and transporting our own bedding, portable toilet and shower, cooking utensils, etc., the advantages of renting this lodge became immediately apparent. We hunted mostly in the San Juan National Forest on Taylor Mesa, which was 12 miles away via a forest service access road. Every afternoon and every evening we would return to the lodge, eat supper, and fall into bed nursing our sore muscles. All agreed that the beds were very comfortable, and the hot showers were a luxury we just would not have had if we had been camping as planned. As one might assume, this lodge is not appointed like a luxury resort, or even a cruise ship. I hope it is never dressed up to the point one would label as "fancy". For outdoorsmen, this place is five star quality. And for the fishermen, you can easily catch your limit of rainbow trout across the road in the Dolores River, as we did several times. Bring them home and grill them on the porch for the freshest meal of trout you could ever have. For the rest of my life, my definition of Colorado, and of elk hunting, will be measured against the wonderful adventure we enjoyed at Bear Creek Mountain Lodge.Recommended for: People with disabilities, families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

The house was great and my two aunts who are 88 were very comfortable. The hummingbirds were the highlight and Bill fussed constantly about keeping the feeder full of food. He must have filled the bottle at least two times each day and even made a special trip to Dolores for sugar! And my other cousins took several hundred pictures of the hummingbirds. Puzzles kept one aunt busy for many hours at a time. Above all, we were all content, happy and just had the best of time. It was the first time for all of us to take a trip together. I loved the fishing, cool weather and the birds. It was a great stay and I do hope that we can return. Thank you. And you have been more than gracious with all your communications with me. And from my past experiences, highly unusual but very appreciated. Again, thank you and Vincenzo couldn't have been better....even bringing me a stick for walking and just in case the bear appeared. We loved it all. I wish you the best.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

The property had everything that was required to make my family have a pleasant stay in Colorado. I doubt that we could have found a warmer, happier, and Cozzier cabin. The ideal place to spend some time in Colorado and to enjoy spectacular views and unwind. I would recommend this cabin to any one who is looking for a get away. Within an hour of the cabin Durango had much to offer for shoppers. The best lobster bisque made on earth can be found in Dorango at Jean-Pierre. The one day locomotive train ride is a must. From the train you can enjoy breath taking scenery of valleys, and mountains. The train destination is a town called Silverton, a nice place to walk. To the north there is Telluride, where you can do some outrageously fun mountain biking! The cabin sits centrally to the mountains to the east, or the desert attractions to the west. We would definately recommend this cabin.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

This lodge is everything the owners claim and more. We were a large group, 8 adults and 9 children, and there was plenty of room for everyone. Our children ranged in age from 5 to 14 and the lodge was perfect for this group. We hiked the mountains behind the house, saw lots of wildlife including deer and hummingbirds, and relaxed on the deck The river below the lodge provided hours of entertainment for both adults and children, the kids splashed in the water and the adults fished for trout. The lodge is spacious and very well appointed, the rooms are very comfortable and the views are awesome. I had reservations about having an on-site host staying in the basement apartment, but Barbara and Vince were incredible hosts, there when you need them and invisible when you don't. Overall it was probably the best vacation we have ever taken, we all look forward to returning in the future. Our family would recommened this lodge to anyone looking for an awesome location that is secluded yet still close to all that Southwest Colorado has to offer.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

We have stayed at this lodge several times and it is a haven...we never want to leave! We have 3 young children and haven't had any problems as noted in the prior review. The lodge is very comfortable with more extras than other places we've stayed, and the onsite help was delightful. The views are superb and the wildlife is wonderful. We will be going back next year!Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

We stayed here unbeknownst to us there was construction going on, there were nails all over the driveway, lots of breakable items in the house we had to move so the kids would not get to them. The cabinet in the kitchen was broken and put back in place so when we tried to open it, it fell off. Found some dirty dishes in the drawers one knife covered with who knows what kind of red substance. Stains on the rugs. We cleaned and scrubbed this place leaving it better than we found it and still didn't get our deposit back. This home is in a beautiful location, however I would never bring my small children here again. This home is not kid friendly.Recommended for: Age 55+.
Owner response: We apologize for any inconvience, that is not our intention. We have taken great care in creating a safe and homey envirornment. Our guests, both before and after your stay, have all loved to vacation in our home. If you had allowed our host to remain on the property during your stay he would have been able to immediately address your concerns as they occured. This is an older family home and is at the end of its remodeling. We have removed the nails from the driveway and have instructed our cleaning staff to check all the cabinets for any soiled items. After our renters leave, we send them in to clean and trust that they charge the appropitate amount. Our housekeeper spent over seven hours cleaning after your departure. This amount was passed on to you and the remainder of the cleaning deposit was returned to you per the agreement. Our home is children friendly, there are games, movies, and the out-of-doors to play but they need to be supervised for their safety. This is especially important with a large group of children, which you had (11). The antiques inside are to create a friendly, inviting atmosphere but can be removed at your request. We heard that the children had a wonderful time playing in the spa and riding on your ATVs. Your suggestions are appreciated so we can continue to improve our accomodations. Sincerely, Barbara and Carol Bradley

We enjoyed our stay. The place is homie with lots of room. Dining room table seated all 10 of us. Great for anyone with a large group. Lots of hiking and sightseeing within 1 hour. Convenient to Telluride and Mesa Verde. The kitchen was very functional and organized. The owner is friendly and very reasonable to deal with. WIFI was decent, considering the very rural location. Beds and furniture are comfortable. Highly recommended.Recommended for: Families with young children, pet owners, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

We had a group of six, 2 adults and 4 teenagers. We were all VERY comfortable, and loved the location! We hiked to the top of the mountain, we played in the river, and just enjoyed relaxing on the porch with the hummingbirds fighting over possession of the multiple feeders. We spent time in Telluride (DO NOT go the Floradora saloon, if you have a large party...), Durango, Silverton, etc. and this was a nice centralized location for reasonable access to all of them. The cabin far enough away from the towns to give you enough quietness to relax, but only about 20 minutes drive to get to stores - a nice balance! The weather (late July) was awesome. I guess there is heat and maybe air conditioning, but all we needed to do was open/close windows to regulate the temperature in the house - we never even looked for any "normal" HVAC controls. We had to work hard to break a sweat :-)Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

I rented the cabin for my husband and his friend in the last of October in 2010 for a hunting trip. The cabin was very spacious and clean, The views were wonderful. When they arrived the leaves had the country side full of colors. While we were there we got a good snow. It's like we got to see two seasons at once. I can't say enough about the owners they are wonderful people.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

About the owner: I have been an interior designer for my entire career and loved remodeling and decorating the Lodge. It has a modern open feeling, but yet retains the 'Northwoods' character that appeals to our guests.
Why the Owner Chose Dolores:
The Lodge has been in our family since it was built over four decades ago. We spent wonderful summers and holidays here with our extended family (six siblings with their 14 kids and now 10 grandkids). We love the open living area with the separate bedrooms for peace and quiet when desired.
The Unique Benefits at this Lodge:
The setting is the most unique thing about the Lodge. It is set on 14 of the most beautiful, aweinspiring acres in the area. Since it is above the river valley, the views of the surrounding mountains are unobstructed. Wildlife abounds with nearly daily sighting of mule deer, elk, hummingbirds and chipmunks, depending on the season.
It is a place for families to gather and reconnect with nature. It is also centrally located so enjoying the activities of the surrounding areas like Telluride and Durango and Mesa Verde are easily accessible.
