Charming Summer Cottage Nestled in Quaint Lobstering Village

Experience the serenity and charm of the Riddiford Cottage. In the family since 1947, the cottage communicates the warmth, character, and rustic beauty of Maine. Enjoy the peace and quiet of the setting surrounded by trees with glimpses of the Damariscotta River (ocean inlet) while you sip coffee on the wrap around deck, take a short walk to the water's edge and the historic swinging bridge in the active lobstering village of South Bristol, or venture out to nearby Pemaquid to visit the lighthouse or swim on the beach. There's no doubt that a vacation to be cherished awaits.
Things to do...
Start off your day with a two minute stroll down to the coastline and hunt for sea glass, or to pick up a paper at the local mom and pop convenience store (try the fresh Maine blueberry pancakes there). Ask the locals about some great trails not far from the elementary school. There are a number of hiking trails in the broader area as well - you should find some maps in the cottage. We also love getting lobster at the local co-op, sampling as much clam chowder as possible, visiting the Pemaquid Lighthouse and Beach, excursions to Damariscotta, Camden, Boothbay Harbor, Reid State Park, crackling fires, lazy mornings and walks viewing the lobster boats and quaint coastline. We're happy to share this slice of family history with you.

My husband and I spent a week at this cottage and loved it! We were looking for a quiet place near the ocean that would give us a true flavor of the Maine seacoast. This area has not been ruined by the tourist trade as have places like Boothbay Harbor. The small towns of Damariscotta and South Bristol are delightful and relatively untouched by much of the commercialism that cheapens many towns along the coast. The decor of the cottage is quaint and warm, with much of it being original to the time it was built (1920's, I think) As you sit on the porch on a quiet evening you can tell the chop of the water by the sound of the halyards hitting the masts of the many sailboats anchored in the small cove. It's a short walk to the fishing village of South Bristol where you can watch the drawbridge letting the fishing boats in and out, AND you can get great fresh fish in the small market there. The cottage is close to some wonderful tourist spots, such as Camden, a pretty sea town with great restaurants, Monehegan Island, one of Andrew Wyeth's homes, and Pemaquid Point, our favorite place to sit and view the rugged coast. It's not very often one can experience a place near the ocean that has not been negatively effected by man and his need for commercial entertainment, but this area has held onto its originality. My husband and I will one day return, and we highly recommend it to others.,Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thanks to Oliver's Gram for articulating many of the great qualities the area possesses and much of the natural appeal of the cottage. It's encouraging to see that others find both the surrounding region and the cottage itself as inviting and enjoyable as we do.

A great property and a wonderful quiet location. We enjoyed the porch and eating outside. We were able to take day trips to see lighthouses, etc but then hibernate for periods of time also. The local fish co-op fed us well with lobster, clams and corn on the cob. The Rockland Lobster festival was in session and part of our group enjoyed the haunted tour of Wamiscotta. Thank you for a wonderful time. The house was clean and well maintained. I would recommend this property to others and the owner was great to work with.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thanks for the great review, Ann! We're thrilled you had a good time and appreciate the time you took to let others know about your experience.

We spent a week and SO enjoyed our time. Riddiford Cottage is just lovely.....lots of "homey" touches make it feel that you are at a family home, not a rental. The kitchen is fully appointed and there were lots of linens and towels. It is clearly a cottage that has been loved by the owner's family and that is passed on to us as visitors. Sitting on the porch in the evenings was so relaxing. The village of South Bristol was a 5 minute walk and you could watch the boats coming in/out of the harbor. Within an hour are so many fun things to do---Pemaquid Point lighthouse, Boothbay Harbor, Port Clyde Kayaks. We can't wait to come back again next year.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, families with young children.
Owner response: We are thankful for your gracious review, and elated that your time was so enjoyable. We hope it's the first of many great memories at the Riddiford Cottage!

This was our first visit to the area after 20+years and it is just as lovely as always. So many things to see and do or just do nothing at all. This was our first visit to the Riddiford cottage and hopefully it will not be our last. The cottage is charming and comfortable, a great place to get away from it all and relax. It is well equipped, clean and cozy. Our favorite spot was the deck, where we ate every meal.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Very encouraging to know you enjoyed it as much as we do. Thanks for the great review - we hope you are able to return soon as well!

We have visited this cabin numerous times over the last 15 years and continue to discover new things to do. You are an hour from Freeport, with L.L.Bean, Boothbay is within 30 minutes and Camden is within an hour drive also. Each of these town are must see for various reason. Five years ago we have purchased 3 kayaks while there and continue to use them on ever visit. The lakes and bays are beautiful and are not very crowded. I have also found that my motorcycle is extremely valuable to expole all the roads and communities. The sense of history in this area is fabulous. The cabin is rustic and charming. Provides you with solitude if you desire yet is a great gathering place that we have utilized many times. There are great restaurants in the area or you can pick up fresh lobster at the fisfermans coop across the street , a 5 minute walk from the cabin and cook them at the cabin. We have always enjoyed our stay at the cabin and highly recommend it.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Thanks for the positive comments!

We stayed at the Ridderford cottage during our first trip to Maine. The cottage was warm and delightful. We enjoyed our morning coffee on the deck listening to the birds and the sounds of the harbor. The cottage in itself is a very peaceful, quiet get-away where one can rest, relax, and refresh. The area offers plenty of diversity for the one who wants to hike, visit the various harbor towns, take a whale-watching cruise, or just enjoy the smells and tastes of the wonderful seafood the Maine coast has to offer. It was a great introduction to Maine and we hope to return.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Thanks, KnG, for your comments. We're always glad to hear people have enjoyed the area and especially the cottage!

Our family and our extended family has vacationed at the Riddiford Cottage 8 times over the last 20 years--we loved it more each time we visited. The owners have improved the property every year. The Cottage is clean, well maintained and is beyond charming. The location can be a get-away from it all experience or it can be the center for visiting all of the tourist venues along the coast of Maine. We give it a five star +++ rating!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, adventure seekers.
