Toulouse farmhouse description
In August of 1997 I had no plan to buy a home in France. But when I saw this farmhouse built in 1832 on 2 acres at the top of a little hill in the southwest and stood there and looked all around for 360 degrees at the most beautiful view in France, I was unable to forget it. At Christmastime that same year I realized that not a day had gone by that I had not thought or dreamed of La Plaine. I picked up the phone and bought it. Now La Plaine has realized its potential and is, after many years of restoration and creation, a perfect retreat for anyone looking for comfort, peace and beauty.
From every room in the house you have a special view. Each room on the ground floor has a door to the outside and the master suite has its own bedroom, study, dressing room and bathroom and can be totally separate by closing a few doors. I shopped for many years to furnish the house with local antiques and I brought all the beds from the U.S. We have some lovely paintings in every room and the kitchen/living room is more than 30 feet long with its fireplace and gourmet kitchen. The original fireplaces are in the master bedroom and the master study. The main guest room on the ground floor has its own terrace with a stunning view and there is a large pergola outside the main room and hallway with a view of the fields and in the distance my neighbor's beautiful blonde cows grazing. The hallway is the entrance to La Plaine and at each end there are large doors that open in the summertime with vast views beyond each one. We have a table in the hallway that can accommodate 16 comfortably when you have a big crowd for dining. The kitchen table seats 8 perfectly and the round table under the pergola outside seats 10. There is a dining table by the pool that can seat 8 and is near the poolside fireplace and barbeque. The pool is classic in size, lined in a beautiful pale terra cotta shade of mosaic tile. This isn't your standard lined French swimming pool. Poolside is very comfortable with shade provided by a covered terrace and outdoor dining furniture and chaises lounges. The pool has an automatic cover for the protection of children.
There is lots to do in this part of France if you can be dragged away from here to do it. There is Albi, nearby, known as one of the "rose cities", because of its distinctive rose-brick Romanesque architecture, where you will find the home and museum of Toulouse-Lautrec and the famous 13th Century Cathedral of Ste. Cecile, as well as many restaurants and boutiques. And just close by is Montauban, a bustling little city with the Ingres Museum. Toulouse, another of the "rose cities" is just 45 minutes away and is packed with history and culture. The Pyrenees is close by (skiing in the winter) and Carcassone, the Mediterranean, Marseilles and Barcelona are within driving distance. Very close by La Plaine are historical hilltop fortified villages and farmer's markets each day in a nearby village. The food and produce available in these markets is fresh and plenty and local and makes cooking a pleasure and an adventure.

About the owner: I live and work in Los Angeles but I come here to France whenever I can. I have lived in several places in my lifetime: Alabama, California, Virginia, and England and now in France. Everyday life is full of stress and worries but La Plaine is my perfect getaway. I breathe deeper here. It helps that I speak the language and I speak French a lot better since I have been forced to speak it now for the past 12 years.
Why the Owner Chose Toulouse:
As I said in my description, I had no intention of owning a place in France. It is just a love story. I fell in love with this place and could not resist. It was a ruin. No one had lived in it since before World War II. I spent 5 years restoring and creating this home. It was a real barn with two rooms that were lived in by the farmers. The rest of it was for the animals. The vast animal space has been turned into the big entrance hallway, the kitchen and living rooms and the main guest room. The master bedroom was the original kitchen with its original fireplace. My study was their sleeping room with another huge fireplace. The house is about 65 percent new construction but you would never know it. The other two guestrooms are upstairs where the hayloft used to be. The renovation and construction was a tremendous amount of fun for me. I searched all over the countryside for period tiles, roof tiles, and bricks. I found wonderful antiques both around here and at flea markets from Toulouse to Paris. It was a huge amount of effort but I loved every minute of it and I am more proud of this place than anything I have ever accomplished in my life.
The Unique Benefits at this Farmhouse:
My pleasure here at La Plaine is just being here and living the life one finds here. Early mornings at open markets, entertaining friends, cooking and just having wonderful visits with the people I love in a place that makes no demands on you to do anything but rest, relax and enjoy yourself. My nieces and nephews tell me that the cycling around here is the best they have ever enjoyed and of course there is a tremendous amount of sightseeing to do.
