Cetona farmhouse description
A World away... Or at least that's how it seems.
Located just 15 convenient minutes from the A1 autostrada, this recently restored farmhouse is close to everything: the village is down the hill, the shopping center and the train station are all a few minutes away by car. But the most magical thing about its location is its seeming isolation! You really feel like you're left civilization behind. Up here on the hill, the air is cooler and cleaner, the panoramas stretch out at your feel for miles, the sounds and smells and colors more vibrant. Whether you're lounging by the pool, happily slicing and dicing away for a luncheon party, meditating in the deliciously cool and peaceful woods, or working up a sweat hiking into town for provisions, you'll be surrounded by genuine tuscan beauty.
The property (Main house and Guest Tower) easily accommodates 8 people in 4 bedrooms, each with its own en suite bath. We wanted to preserve as many of the original building materials as possible and were very rigorous in incorporating local building traditions and techniques in the restoration, using native stone, marble and color pigments throughout the house. Furnished with a sophisticated mix of European antiques and modern upholstered pieces, the house is stylish yet down-to-earth. The main house consists of 3 bedrooms and 3 baths, a large living room, dining room, a reading/TV room, laundry, and an enormous gourmet kitchen. The tower is affectionately known as 'the honeymoon suite.' Set apart, it is a 2 story structure with a downstairs sitting room and bath, and a lovely bedroom upstairs. The views from the tower are splendid and it is, indeed, a very romantic spot.
Created out of a jungle of weeds, shrubs, and brambles, the garden pays homage to the original olive terraces that were discovered during the restoration process. The front lawn is surrounded by lavender hedges and flowing shrubs and is shaded by cypress and oak trees. The kitchen herb garden provides all the thyme, sage, and rosemary you could possible need during your stay. And the pool was designed to fit inside the existing measurements of one of these cascading terraces. Resembling an enormous water trough, it fits seamlessly into the landscape and is completely hidden from view. Only the sound of its delightful waterfall gives away its location.
The house is configured as follows:
3 King-bedded Rooms
1 Twin-bedded Room
Each bedroom has its own en-suite bathroom. (4)
Living Room with Fireplace
Games Room with Foosball Table and Drum Kit
The absolute maximum number of guests is 8.
This is NOT a hotel but a private residence.
There is no air-conditioning. Given the house's thick-walled construction and elevation, we have never felt it was necessary. For the 2 or 3 days each summer it becomes really hot, we live in pool or in the woods and there are plenty of fans. Besides, a/c here is really environmentally unfriendly.

Tremendous views, in a wonderful part of Tuscany !
Tremendous views, in a wonderful part of Tuscany !
We had four couples meet up at the villa. It is really quite roomy and well appointed. The kitchen is terriffic as we went out during the day and prepared meals for the evenings. It is a good idea to be home before dark- the road to the villa is narrow, steep and difficult to navigate- especially after a few glasses of Tuscan Vino. We held a forty year remarraige on the back terrace overlooking the Tuscan Hills, followed by a catered meal arranged by Elizabeth. It was picture perfect! We had a few minor problems with the villa- the water needed to be switched on after some maintenance- a little troublesome, but in the big scheme - just added to the adventure. Once switched on we had plenty of water for everyone. The villa was perfect for sightseeing during the day and long relaxing evenings, chatting, dining and enjoying the Tuscan hills over some fabulous wine. Be sure to follow Elizabeth's advice on where to eat, and get a vehicle with good clearance. The roads to the villa off the main road, would never pass here! A GPS is a must. We had a wonderful time, put Tuscany on your bucket list!!!

Owner response: Always helps to have a pump that's switched on, non? You all were great guests...kind to both house and owner (always a plus!) , patient with all the quirks and cultural kinks that abound here in our remote corner of Tuscany, and curious and enthusiastic about it all. Come back when it's still green and warm...lounging in the garden with a few bottles of Brunello is the yummiest. And you don't have to worry about dodging wild boar or trees in the road !! All my best!!
My stay at La Buro was heavenly! The comforts of a four-star hotel (replete with top-of-the-line bathrooms fitted with beautiful natural materials, sumptuous bedding), paired with the charm of a meticulously restored Tuscan villa made me want to move right in. The views are stunning and the location ideal. The hill town of Cetona, minutes away, is charming and picturesque.

I stayed here two years ago and am hoping to return again next summer. The views are incredible. You are on a mountain overlooking a quintessential Tuscan vista, amid olive groves and lavender. One of Italy's best restaurants is at the neighboring monastery. I stayed in the two-story "tower" bedroom with luxurious linens and a separate sitting area downstairs. Though the house looks traditional on the outside, everything on the inside is fresh and new. Outside, the pool, gardens and al fresco dining area are also lovely. The hardest part is forcing yourself to leave this idyllic spot to go sight- seeing. The owner is extremely conscientious. Easy access to Sienna, Rome and Florence.

As we pulled into the property along rosemary and lavender hedges we immediately knew we'd made the right choice. I can still hear the whisper of the olive trees and see their silvery leaves glittering in the fresh Tuscan air. Everything about this home makes you want to return... inside and out! A visual gem - Handsomely appointed architectural details throughout - every finish is perfect yet not overdone. The interiors are tastefully designed, and the layout is comfortable and gracious - our large extended family could easily be together while not feeling on top of each other. The kitchen was fully equipped and functional - and we felt truly Italian while sipping our cappuccinos under the guesthouse arbor overlooking the valley. There are actually incredible vistas from every point which make relaxing in the gardens and poolside all the more special. We enjoyed exploring the property's fabulous walks and trails. It was a short drive into the quaint town of Cetona - with it's amazing restaurants and it's best kept secret - ceramic potter Pippo. Enjoyed one of my most memorable and delicious tasting dinners in the nearby monastery restaurant - book in advance as they only seat 4 or five tables! Easy access to other Tuscan downs for day trips. The owner speaks many languages perfectly, and was most helpful and knowledgeable about the area. Can't wait to return!

What magic! Who could ever resist such an ideal location? The proximity to the autostrada make the property convenient and the restoration of the house creates a luxurious vacation spot. Both European and American amenities abound making La Buro an advantageous place to stay for extreme comfort. Can't wait to visit again!

Why the Owner Chose Cetona:
Fantastic location!! 15 minutes from the A1 Autostrada exit. 15 minutes to the Chiusi train station. Less than an hour from Siena, Perugia, Arezzo, Pienza, Montepulciano, San Casciano dei Bagni, Bagno Vignoni, Città della Pieve. It is the greatest base for exploring Tuscany and Umbria.
The Unique Benefits at this Farmhouse:
The medieval village of Cetona contains every amenity and is a beautiful, if challenging, 15 minute walk down the hill. For such a compact hamlet, it's amazing to find 2 superb restaurants, 2 bars, 2 bakers, 2 ATMS, a butcher, a chemist, a hardware store and one of the most interesting ceramists in the entire area!! (We lack only a candlestick maker.) Whether daily hikes into town or to the archaeological park adjacent to the property or longer adventures to some of the many, many marvelous historical sites nearby, a wonderful, relaxing holiday awaits you at this most 'simpatico' country house.
