Night Life on St. John...
The laid back night life on St. John is like no other in the Caribbean. There is a variety of musical/dancing entertainment to suit all tastes--everything from reggae to rock. Of course, St. Thomas, our cosmopolitan neighbor, offers even more choices and is easily accessible by ferry.
With the exception of The Cottage, all Battery Hill units are fully equipped for meal preparation, and Starfish Market, our island sized supermarket, is nearby. So enjoying some good wine and a candle lit dinner 'at home' is always an option. But who wants to cook after a tough day at the beach, right?
St. John boasts approximately three dozen dining spots ranging from affordable delicatessens, backyard West Indian fare, outdoor rib delights and pizza, to some of the best fine dining in the Caribbean offering French, Italian, Asian and American food. Dining on St. John is 'casually elegant', and casual attire is appropriate. Smart casual, of course!
Again, a short ferry ride to St. Thomas affords you many additional choices.
To quote Islands Magazine, '...St. John offers the best string of beaches in the Caribbean.' Once you have experienced them first hand, we think you will agree. Soft white sand leads you into warm, clear turquoise waters, while extensive coral reefs provide wonderful snorkeling opportunities. Warning to beach lovers: St. John can be addictive!
Whether you are an avid scuba diver or a beginner, St. John has exactly what you are looking for. You will find everything from 1/2 day introductory dives to complete three-day certification packages.
Low Key Watersports, located in Wharfside Village, is a PADI five star IDC training facility (and it's only a 10 minute walk from your doorstep). They also offer NAUI and SSI certifications. If you begin your classes at home, you can complete the open water phase of your training in the beautiful Caribbean! Dive sites are plentiful and are as shallow as 15 feet or as challenging as the spectacular 'Rhone' wreck dive. Night diving is also popular and available for groups of three or more.
Summer is a great time for diving in the Virgin Islands when calmer seas allow ready access to the more distant dive sites. Winter or summer, you'll find our numerous sites swarming with colorful fish and exotic creatures.
Speed & Sail Boat Rental...
If skimming over the water rather than swimming under it is more to your liking, you can rent anything from dinghies to luxurious yachts. Take a quick trip around the bay, or escape to a remote island in a cabin cruiser. Our guests have been very pleased with the inflatable dingy rentals offered by Noah's Little Arks right on Cruz Bay Beach. These rentals offer access to beaches not easily accessible by land.
If you prefer not to captain your own boat, you can still enjoy the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean. Just charter your own boat or book space on a party boat. Either way, once you get on board your only responsibility will be to sit back and relax -- someone else will do all the work!
There are several day cruises that you can choose from--choose a day trip to the Baths at Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands, sail away to have lunch on a deserted island or hop on a short sunset cruise. It's your choice. Our Villa Manager will be happy to provide information and arrange bookings.
Shopping on St. John...
When most people think of shopping, they think of Charlotte Amalie, and in fact, St. Thomas is just a 15 minute ferry ride away (45 min if you chose to take the ferry right into Charlotte Amalie harbor). We think it only fair to note, however, that St. John provides a wide variety of shopping, all within easy walking distance of Battery Hill. From goldsmiths, to emeralds, to t-shirts and other local island goods, you'll find plenty of excellent shopping nearby.
Although Battery Hill's convenient location and the ready availability of low cost taxi service makes a rental car unnecessary, the only way to explore our beautiful island is in the comfort of a rental vehicle. One of the more popular means of getting around the islands is by way of an open-air Jeep. You will not miss one spectacular view or area of interest and you can tour at your own pace. Ask our manager for his recommendations.
A Bit About Our Island...
Area: 19 square miles (roughly 9 miles long and 2 miles wide).
Population: approximately 5,000 (compared to 55,000 on St. Thomas).
Geography: The island is situated 1,075 miles East-Southeast of Miami, and 30 miles east of Puerto Rico. It is covered with lush tropical vegetation and fringed by iridescent shores.
Language: English is the official language. Spanish and Creole are also widely spoken.
Religion: Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, Moravian, Baptist, Seventh Day Adventist, Methodist and Jehovah's Witness.
Electricity: 110 volts AC, 60Hz (same as on the US mainland)
Newspapers: The Tradewinds is St. John's weekly newspaper. The Daily News, published daily, covers the entire US Virgin Islands. USA Today, The Wall Street Journal and several other US Metropolitan and Puerto Rican newspapers are usually also available.
Postal Service: Yes, St. John has it's very own Post Office. Zip Code is 00831.
Provisions: Yes, we have our very own SuperMarket (not very 'super' by Stateside standards) where you should be able to find just about everything you need food-wise. Expect to pay at least 25% more than Stateside. Wine and spirits are also readily available, and island rums can be cheaper than Coke.
Communications: While your rental accommodations will usually offer unlimited free local calls, long distance service is usually blocked. You should come prepared with your own calling card or cell phone. There are a couple of internet cafes where you can check your email, and some rental properties are beginning to offer DSL service.
History: St. John's modern day history began in 1718, when the first plantation was established using slave labor. During their heyday, there were 109 different plantations producing sugar, cotton and, of course, rum. Having passed up an earlier opportunity to purchase St. John and the rest of the Danish West Indies for $7.5 million, the US purchased the islands in 1917, at a cost of $25 million, and they are now an unincorporated Territory of the United States.
Government: The US Virgin Islands are governed by and elected Governor, and 15 member Senate. Although residents are U.S. citizens, they may not vote in presidential elections. One elected delegate represents the Territory in the U.S. House of Representatives.
National Park: In the 1950's, Lawrence Rockefeller acquired ownership of more than half the land area of St. John. Soon after, he reopened Caneel Bay Resort and donated the remaining acreage to the United States Government as public parkland. Currently, the National Park Service staff on St. John maintains over 7,200 acres of parkland and 5,650 acres of offshore waters and reefs.
Medical Facilities: The Myrah Keating Smith Clinic is St. John's primary medical care facility. Patients requiring hospitalization are transported by ambulance boat to the Roy L. Schneider Hospital on St. Thomas.
Temperature: Sunny days with year round temperatures from 76 to 92 degrees. Daily average temperatures range from 77 degrees in winter to 82 degrees in summer. Warmer days are cooled by pleasant trade winds. Average annual rainfall is 43 inches, with much of that occurring during September and October.
Currency: United States currency is used. As on the U.S. mainland, tipping of 15% to 20% is customary for service well done.
Time Zone: St. John is in the Atlantic Standard Time Zone, one hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time (except during Daylight Savings Time).
Passports: U.S. citizens need not carry passports to visit the Territory, but must be prepared to show evidence of citizenship upon leaving. Some form of identification (driver's license, passport or birth certificate with a picture ID) must be carried. Travel to the British Virgin Islands requires a passport.
Dress: St. John has adopted a casual approach to dressing, although abbreviated attire or swimsuits are not acceptable in Cruz Bay. Nude bathing is unlawful.
Travel Light: Bring at least two swimsuits, several pairs of shorts, sandals and athletic shoes. There no restaurants in Cruz Bay where a jacket and tie are required or expected. Think casual. Bring a camera, but leave the designer luggage and expensive jewelry at home.
Driving: Cars on the island are just like on the US mainland, but driving is on the LEFT side of the road.

Cruz Bay Vacation
Cruz Bay Vacation
Enjoyed our week at Harbour view Condo in Battery Hill. It was clean and close to town. This was our second year visiting the island. the condo had great views of the Bay and the pool is a 'must' to dip into after returning from the short walk to town. The owner contacted us shortly prior to our trip and provided all necessary information about the condo. There is a beach closeby, but this was our least favorite of all the beaches. If you enjoy hiking, walking and exercise, this is an awesome place to stay. A car is nice, but certainly not a requirement to stay here. The kitchen was stocked for basic food preparation
