Wonderful Home Away from Home!
Wonderful Home Away from Home!

Staying in this beautiful home helped to make our first visit to Martha's Vineyard much more relaxing and memorable. Every attention to detail was paid in setting up this home for guests. We especially loved the fact that the owners took the time to supply the basic necessities for cooking, so we didn't have to worry about going shopping immediately upon arrival to MV. Everything you need for a pleasant stay is at your finger tips. What you see in the listing photos is completely accurate...beautifully maintained and super clean. The owners had lots of great information on places to visit and Vineyard activities. The house is conveniently located close to the Vineyard Haven Ferry, shopping, and several top notch eateries. Walking distance to The Black Dog Tavern and shops, Art Cliff Diner (awesome breakfast!), and The Net Result fish market/restaurant...all of which we enjoyed thoroughly. We took daily walks with our dog by Lagoon Pond, and and loved the close proximity to Oaks Bluffs (by car). Close to kayaking, paddle boarding, windsurf shops. We just got home and our kids can't wait to go back! Definitely recommend this home away from home!Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Thank you again for making our vacation the best week we have ever had (no exaggeration). It was truly amazing and your house and the detailed preparation was THE key factor. From the outside shower (the biggest hit), the fire pit, the wonderful stocked kitchen and the great screened porch. We LOVED every square inch of the place and appreciate the treatment you gave us the night we 'thought' we had a refrigerator problem. I work in the travel business and have to stay away from home more than half of the year. So when 'vacation' time arrives, it seems like more of the same in most incidences. But this week was not the case and I felt so 'at home' in your house that I truly could've just stayed there forever.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Thank you, Bud and Debbie! You and your family were such amazing guests that we would have loved it if you stayed "forever". ; ) I was so happy that we could help you to bring back such fond Vineyard memories from years past and provide you with a home with which you could share your love of MV with your children, both grown and young. Thank you again and please consider the main house or the cottage again for your next MV stay. Hugs, Jennifer & Hudson

My extended family stayed here for a combined wedding + reunion in MV. It was perfect in every way. The house is beautifully and comfortably furnished, immaculately clean, charming MV architecture, and incredibly well equipped for vacationing families. Many things that I automatically pack (beach towels, first aid kit, writing materials, laundry soap, favorite cooking spices, etc. etc.) were not used or needed because the house had everything, even dog bowls. After unpacking, we settled in so quickly that we felt right at home - better, actually - by the first evening. The house has a great location atop a hill and is close to the center of activity in Vineyard Haven. The kitchen is big and very well-equipped, perfect for my sisters and I to cook together. The living and dining areas also accommodate big families very well, with a large central area, comfortable sofas and chairs, and a nook for Uncle to nap or Auntie to read. There was also great sun room for little kids to play or big kids to hang out, and a back deck where the adults spent a lot of time. Lots of board games, plus internet and media access, too. The owners, Jenn and Hudson, made our family very welcome, and were always available for questions about the house or island. We all agreed that we would come back, and would enthusiastically recommend this house to others. To the owners: thank you again for making our family so welcome, the stay so comfortable, and our vacation such fun for all.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Thank you so much for your kind words, Laurie! We truly enjoyed having the Alexander clan as our guests! Keep in mind that we will be posting and renting our guest cottage for smaller groups during the off-season. I'll let you know when it's up and running for business on VRBO! :) Hope to see you again next summer, or sooner. Best regards, Jennifer & Hudson

We had a great week here at the island! Its been very relaxing and enjoyable. So glad we happened upon your sweet house instead of a hotel. This has been much more like home. Everything has gone very smoothly. Thanks and we look forward to seeing you again!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Everything we could have possibly wanted was provided for our comfort and pleasure. Yummy beach towels and a generously provisioned kitchen, an added bonus. Your helpful suggestions made our Vineyard stay more than a vacation. Your house is truly a home. We'll be back soon!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

We spent a week here in June 2010 – three grown ups and three teens. It is certainly one of the very nicest places we have ever stayed. The rooms are large with high ceilings, architectural detail and lots of windows. In addition to the interior space there is a large screened porch, a deck with grill, and Adirondack chairs out in the grass. Also space outside for badminton. The house is furnished in a style I would call “country elegant.” Everything is very simple and yet clearly thoughtfully arranged. Large, fully appointed and well lighted kitchen. Two of the four bedrooms have their own simple half baths while the upstairs hall bath is upgraded and with enough extra space to include an armed chair. Master bedroom has an ample closet I wish I could bring home with me. The house is on top of a hill and the breezes are wonderful. It is also walking distance to town – this was great when we dropped the boys off to play tennis and then they could walk home. A short morning walk brings you to a great view of sunrise over the water. Despite the proximity to things the house is very private and the neighborhood quiet. The immediate neighborhood is an older, well settled area with great gardens and feels very safe – we never locked the doors. For all the attractions and temptations of MV we were willing to go out, but it always felt great to get back and just spend time at the house.Did you find this review helpful? Fabulous Shopping Plaza! View on map
Net Result (hands down the BEST fresh seafood market on island), Rocco's Pizza (again, the BEST), Martha's Closet (amazing consignment shop), Toy store, etc. etc. (The plaza is a quick walk from our Skiff Ave property if you walk behind Maciel Marine and take the path through to Beach Road...which spills you out right behind the plaza.)

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2006
About the owner: I moved here 2 years ago to start a new life on this magical island. I knew from the moment I stepped off the boat, with my 9 year old son and one truckload of all my worldly posessions, that the island lifestyle was what I had been longing for my whole life. I moved here to start fresh, to enjoy the wonderful sense of community that the island offers, and to explore the beaches, towns and parks- to live life at a slower, more relaxed pace. Upon moving here, we resided ourselves to the fact that we were sure to spend quite possibly years doing what locals refer to as 'The Island Shuffle'; going from winter rental to summer tent until the right house presents itself. Well, fate had another agenda for us-- one meeting with Sharon, the property owner, and one step into the Skiff Ave house and we knew we had found the perfect property for us. Since that day, we have been enjoying this large, incredibly relaxing, comfortable house. In the off-season we entertain family, cozy up the fire, sit around the dining room table playing family games and retreat to our own private spaces for naps and good reads. We grill on the porch, go to the island events, and of course take in the stunning Menemsha sunsets and all the beaches we can! In the summer, we are happy to move into our sweetly renovated cottage that sits behind the main house and enjoy sharing this HIlltop Haven with our summer guests! We know you will love this house as much as we do. I hope you'll enjoy all that Martha's Vineyard has to offer and you'll never want to leave.... but you can always return! Jennifer Nightlinger, Martha's Vineyard.
Why the Owner Chose Vineyard Haven:
This property is perfect for families and friends to rest, relax, and entertain in a stress free comfortable setting.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
My favorite time to walk down to the lagoon (a 3 minute walk down a hill) is in the late afternoon when all the birds are flying low above the beach grasses, and lighting upon the pilings. The sun at that time of day is spectacular over the water. Walking out Hines Point (around the lagoon) is a total pleasure, and renting kayaks from there is as fun and peaceful as life gets. Of course, the short walk to town, the restaurants and shops is perfect any time of day, and is great for kids, as you can cut right through the playground and park on the way if you don't walk by the lagoon.
The house itself is one of the rare Vineyard homes that is elevated on hill, and the breezes through all the large windows are wonderful! The house is beautifully decorated and the furniture is meant for fully relaxing in comfort. The back porch is perfect for gathering and grilling, and the house as a whole is perfectly hospitable for entertaining dinner guests if you care to have company!
