Get Completely Off the Grid in Beautiful Southwest Colorado
- Minimum stay:3 nights
- Internet:No
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
At 10,500 feet Oleo Guest Ranch is located in a remote part of SW Colorado (between Creede and Lake City) and is surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery that the Rockies have to offer. Each cabin offers privacy and breathtaking views with comfortable accommodations. Oleo is very remote with the entire ranch's waters needs being supplied by fresh water drawn directly out of the mountain the cabins are built on. Propane runs the appliances and heats the water with modern kitchen and bathroom. Electricity is neither needed nor available and we do not allow generators. Anything that needs to be plugged in will not be of any use at Oleo. You truly do get to take yourself 'off the grid' while staying at Oleo and your mind and body will thank you for it. Don't worry, the outside world is just a short beautiful drive over slumgullion pass into Lake City, if anything is needed.
For activities there are miles and miles of scenic trails for hiking, photography, fishing, or just relaxing await you upon arrival. Moose and Elk are often seen at the ranch and several kinds of hummingbirds are always around the many cabin feeders. The colorful wildflowers in summer, the wind blowing through the Aspens, and the spectacular color changing fall foliage is nature at its best. Five stocked ponds and 1.5 miles of streams provide guests with private fishing. Beginners to the avid fly fisherman will have ample opportunity to wet their lines. Peace and quiet is not something you have to seek out at Oleo and the wind blowing through the Aspens will be the only thing you hear while reading your book on the deck. There is zero light pollution at night so star gazing is one of the most incredible things you will ever witness. Also, look no further than to Oleo to escape the heat of the summer. The average temperatures during the day are 65 and it night it can drop below freezing. Day trips 'off the ranch' are so abundant and can be anything from climbing one or the seven 14K mountains, fishing the Rio Grande river, hiking the continental divide trail, renting a jeep in Lake City and driving over Engineer pass, as well as something as simple as having an ice cream cone in Lake City. There is so much to see and do in one of the most beautiful areas of the Rockies.
Thank you for taking a look at Oleo and we hope to see you soon enjoying the simple life at the ranch.

My family and I have been going to Oleo for several years in a row. The peace and quiet at the ranch is worth the trip, not to mention the wildlife that can be seen everyday. For the novice or pro fisherman, Oleo has something to offer. The managers of the ranch,Ronnie and Barbara, are the nicest people you will ever meet. Horseback rides offer the most beautiful way to see the outstanding scenery that surrounds the ranch. The cabins range from two bedroom for four people, to five bedrooms for 10 people. All are furnished with everything you could need for cooking and comfort. Will be back soon! BJ and linda Furlow, TexasDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We've been going to Oleo on and off for 16 years. This year I took my mom & 6 of her girlfriends to Oleo to celebrate her 60th birthday. It was a great weekend for all of us. We thoroughly enjoyed the cabin (La Garita) and the simplicity of a stay at Oleo. The 6 newcomers have all started working on their families for next summer. The lack of electricity is refreshing. The place is clean and quiet. I cannot say enough about Ronnie & Barbara. They're complete professionals and are some of the kindest people I've ever met. Looking forward to being back in August with my brothers.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We can not say enough good things about our stay at Oleo Ranch. The cabins are first rate with comfortable beds, full kitchens and plenty of lounge seating in the living room areas. The outside decks are large and offer tremendous views. It is great to be able to go out on the deck in the morning or evening with a hot cup of coffee and be able to see mule deer, moose, fox and horses near the cabin or to just sit and watch the animals, birds and hummingbirds going about their business. If you are into fishing, the ponds on the property are stocked with brook and rainbow trout. The ponds are a good place to practice for novice flyfishers (like myself) and for those who are not into flyfishing. There is also a creek which runs through the property which offers good flyfishing. There are several lakes and the Rio Grande River within short driving distances from the ranch which offer good fishing opportunities as well. We tried them all and had a blast. The sightseeing is great! We saw mule deer, elk, turkey, bighorn sheep, moose and all kinds of birds and flowers. The mountain views are spectacular! I recommend a trip to Crystal Falls, Continental Resevoir, the overlook above Lake San Cristobal (on the way to Lake City) and a drive at least part of the way up to Bristol Head Peak and/or Crystal Lake. Be sure and check to see if four wheel drive or jeeps are needed before taking off down some of the back trails. If you want to go to the top of Bristol Head or to Crystal Lake, high clearance four wheel drive or an ATV is needed. My wife was concerned about not having electricity in the cabin but after the first day, she realized she could do just about anything she needed to do without it. What struck my wife most about our stay was the beauty, peacefulness and quite of the mountains. She loved just sitting on the deck listening to the breeze blowing through the trees while reading her book. This is a trip that we plan to make into an annual event with our family. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Jerry and Kim Doss Lamesa, TexasDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

This is a great place to nothing! However if you do decide to venture away from your "cabin in the mountains", the area is full of things we flat-landers seldom get to enjoy. The cabin is well equipped and the management was ready to help with anything. Mike & Gayle Kotch Concan, TexasDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0
