Stanley cabin description
“Almost Heaven” is an 1,100 square foot log vacation home located on one acre in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area wilderness. The cabin has a huge Southern exposure and windows all around with a view of the Sawtooths. Four skylights, light pine floors and sheet rock walls give the cabin an airy, light, clean atmosphere.
Downstairs is a living/dining area and well-equipped kitchen, one bedroom with a queen bed, and a full bath. Upstairs is a gigantic, high-ceilinged loft with a queen bed and double futon. There is also an inflatable queen aero-bed. Outside is a south and west facing two-sided deck for glorious outdoor relaxation, eating, and sleeping if you’re the hardy type.
The cabin is well-designed, clean, comfortable, and spacious. Furnishings are traditional/contemporary and tolerate children, dogs, and relaxed adults. While offering taste, style, and comfort, the cabin is definitely a get-away cabin rather than your luxury home-away-from-home.
“Almost Heaven” is located in a small, quiet vacation community three miles outside Stanley at the base of the Sawtooth Mountains that has a mix of one-acre and five-acre lots - most w/ small cabins - abutting forest service land. You can walk out the front door to hike or bike to pristine lakes, creeks, meadows, and mountains. If you want a 'city' fix bigger than Stanley, you can be in Sun Valley in one hour for gallery walks, the summer symphony, or the nationally-known Wine Auction. There are also many additional places to hike, bike and enjoy water sports in the Sun Valley area.

The only hesitation I have about providing this review is that others will discover this heavenly slice to the point it will make it difficult for me to book a time. This is a place where me and my sweetheart wife have been twice and intend to go again and again. Thanks Jima for sharing this with others. Ken Curtis

Owner response: Ken and his wife are the best visitors! They leave the cabin in great shape. It's always really easy to come in and get the cabin cleaned for the next guests. And Ken even brings along his tool box to repair whatever he can lay his hands on that needs attention. I almost always have great guests - and these guys are at the top of my list.

Two friends and I stayed 6 nights in the cabin in mid July and we loved the cabin and its location. It is beautifully designed with many thoughtful touches to make one's stay pleasant and comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked with cookware and dishes which made life easy. There were no surprises as the listing description was accurate and we found the cabin very clean. The downstairs bed was firmer than I like but others may prefer that. We liked being a couple of miles out of Stanley and yet close enough to make the trip to town and to hiking trails without a hassle. At the end of the day it felt good to be driving down the dirt road and back to our home away from home. Although there are other cabins not far away it was very peaceful both day and night. We felt far removed from the world even though we were not. One of the best things about our stay was being able to walk out the door and down the road to the Goat Creek Trail; a gorgeous short hike ending in a sweet meadow with the Sawtooths looming over it. Jima was wonderful in answering all my many questions before we arrived. I would definitely recommend a stay at this cozy, beautiful cabin.

In July of 2013, we spent two days of rest and relaxation at Almost Heaven cabin in Stanley, ID. The cabin is lovely--beautiful view of the mountains, located on a quiet forested lot, beautiful deck for reading and viewing the stars, wonderful shower, another wonderful bed and futon in the loft. Jima's cabin is super clean and homey; beds are very comfortable. (There are definitely locks on the doors. A previous reviewer said there were no locks--but that information is incorrect.) We will definitely return. If we were to build a cabin, we'd want it to be just like this one. Easy, breezy, quiet and quaint!!

Owner response: Thanks so much Mary. You were a great guest - left the cabin in great shape. Please come back soon!
A dear friend and I spent the most wonderful weekend, along with my friend's collie, last fall--I just had to post it here to share!! We had not seen the property, except for a picture, until we drove up and we were wowed! It is so inviting and welcoming as you drive up the lane through the trees. The special details such as the beautiful front door with old fashioned oval glass, and a unique door knocker hinted at the delights to follow inside. As we explored the lovely log cabin, each corner we turned made us exclaim anew at the attention to detail that had been expended in furnishing and decorating the cozy home.We actually photographed each and every room so that we could share it with those with whom we shared our vacation photos, and, for our own albums. The comfortable furnishings and colors used were enough to make us wish we could stay forever! We both hope to return one day as it was so restful and absolutely a delightful experience in every way. It is not often that such a lovely place will accept pets and it was a terrific bonus to be able to share the time with my friend's darling dog--who loved walking through the woods and down the road past neighboring cabins. The property is large and there is complete privacy. The kitchen was well appointed and convenient and we prepared some lovely meals there, sharing them in the beautiful dining area, with views of the surrounding trees and vistas. When my friend saw the room that was to be hers, she was delighted with it's decor. My room was in the loft, which overlooked the charming living room, with a large log bed nestled under the eaves, looking across the living room space to large windows going to the roof's peak providing a gorgeous view of the surrounding area. I loved reading up there after sleeping in every morning! There is also a VCR and TV so that one can watch movies up there, which we did! All in all we agreed that we had never spent a more relaxing weekend nor had we ever spent time in a more charming cabin! We hope to do it again soon!!

Owner response: Thanks for your wonderful words, Sue. I'm glad you had such a good time and hope you come back!
Upon arrival to the cabin we were taken by your wonderful views of the snow capped Sawtooth Mountains. The cabin was very comfortable, cozy and clean. This was a peaceful retreat for us. Thank you for providing such nice choices of music. Great place to read, relax and recharge. Someday we hope to return. Love the Stanley Bakery!

Not "Almost Heaven" - rather "Far from Heaven"
Not "Almost Heaven" - rather "Far from Heaven"
This cabin is a very poor value for money. Potential renters should be aware of a number of issues with the cabin before renting (some of which are acknowledged on website, others not). Quick assessment of pros and cons: Pros: * Great location at the heart of the Sawtooths * Good selection of books and music in the cabin * Good supply of very hot water Cons: * Incredibly small stand size – it felt like we were living on top of the neighbors despite being in one of the remotest areas in the lower 48 * Location feels like it's in an industrial area or a construction yard. We were woken every morning by the noise of sawing and loud motor engines. There is also a lot of construction equipment scattered around the area * No view to speak of from the cabin. Not really worth sitting on decks because there's nothing to see but dying and stunted pine trees, piles of fire wood, and other trash in the yard (hidden by snow in photos). Note that owner provides no photos of the views because there aren't any * The privacy leaves much to be desired. Southerly neighbors can see right into upper bedroom from their driveway and northerly ones right into ground floor bedroom * Kitchen is deficient in several respects (some mentioned - read carefully). No microwave oven. No dishwasher and no reasonably sized frying pan * There is no washing machine (noted on website). As a result, the towels and linen smelled sweaty and musty - we had to take some of them to be cleaned in Stanley which was expensive and inconvenient * The whole place could do with a really good scrubbing - as would be true for any place where the owner relies on guests to do the cleaning (as noted in the “Care Guidelines” sheet provided to renters in the cabin) * No locks on the doors so you can’t leave valuables in the cabin * No external garbage can or garbage service. Have to drive to Stanley * No phone and no internet connection (Verizon only – we got only weak and intermittent service on AT&T). Noted on the website but disappointing at this price point. But there is fiber optic cable in the neighborhood - there is a very visible marker for a fiber optic cable on the corner of Obsidian and Goat Creek roads about 150 yards from the cabin * The neighbors next door (to the north) were quite rowdy and made a fair bit of noise in the evenings. On the whole I would not recommend paying the asking price per week to stay in this cabin. Even at 30% less this cabin leaves a lot to be desired

Owner response: I'm sorry this visitor did not enjoy his stay. His is an unusual response, as can be seen in my guestbook with its wonderful and complimentary quotes over the past seven years. This guest misrepresents the cabin in the following ways: 1. He describes the one-acre corner lot on which the cabin sits as an "incredibly small stand." An acre is an acre, however. 2. Two small cabins were being built in the area, hence a tractor and one small crane (not near the cabin). 3. There are curtains in the downstairs bedroom and accordion shades on the south picture windows. You can't see into the upper windows without a ladder. 4. The cabin is cleaned thoroughly before guests arrive. Guests are asked to leave the cabin in the shape they found it. 5. Sheets and towels are air-dried - clean of artificial scents. There is no expensive cleaning service in Stanley. 6. Both doors lock. 7. The Sawtooth Mountains can be enjoyed from the deck. 8. The forest has had beetle-kill (along with the rest of the U.S.) but green stands of lodgepole are filling in everywhere. If you're interested in the cabin, please be sure to ask me absolutely any and all questions, especially if this guest's remarks worry you. Thanks.

Thanks for the great time!
Loved the peaceful setting and the inviting, comfortable space in the cabin, close enough to Stanley for going out to dinner. Great base to explore the area. Will recommend to family and friends.

About the owner: I live and work in Ketchum, Idaho, next to Sun Valley resort, consulting to businesses and supporting entrepreneurial development both in and outside the area. Almost Heaven is my get-away, usually during the summer when life turns more toward recreation and visiting friends. When the cabin isn't rented, I'm there relaxing. I am a Ph.D. psychologist and organization development consultant who grew up in NYC and has 'come a long way, baby!' to this completely different lifestyle. While I occasionally miss city amenities, I'll never live in a big city again. I enjoy knowing that travelers, big city or otherwise, can have a chance to feel the peace that I do in the mountains at my cabin!
Why the Owner Chose Stanley:
I visited Stanley way back in 1969 as one of the first people on commercial trips down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. I returned 21 years later and fell in love with the area all over again. I bought an acre of land, hired a local builder with whom I designed Almost Heaven, and lived in a tent for four months on the property watching the cabin go up log by log. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made! Virtually everyone who visits says the cabin has a magical calming effect on their minds and spirits.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
I love the sound of quiet - it seeps into my soul and calms me. I can sit for hours on the large deck and look at the mountains, the wildflowers on my property, read, hang, visit with friends. There's nothing better. The cabin is visitor-friendly and I have wonderful neighbors (who come in for the summer) whom I visit when I'm not reading and recovering from working life.
