Lavender Hill Farm House with View, Gardens, Walk to the Beach

Lavender Hill Farm is well known on Vashon Island for our U-Cut lavender stand and farm store, open from late June through early August. The property has 1500 lavender plants and more than 15 varieties, as well as beautiful gardens and stunning views. Come vacation in this tranquil setting in a 1930's farmhouse, thoughtfully updated and spacious enough for a reunion of friends and family. The long farmhouse porch is the perfect spot for morning coffee overlooking the gardens, fields, Quartermaster Harbor and Mount Rainier. Listen to the bees as you stroll through the fields and wander into the town of Burton, just a five minute walk, for supplies, coffee, and some browsing or a meal on the deck of the Quartermaster Inn. Inner and Outer Quartermaster Harbor is a short walk.
The house is light and bright, with nicely appointed guestrooms and three bathrooms for guests. The kitchen works for a crowd, with two ovens, a large center island, 6 burner cook top and large pantry - and there's a second fridge in the basement. The living room has two seating areas, there are two tables in the dining room and the long porch table seats twelve.
Enjoy the stars at night, the quiet, and spend your days biking, riding horses, kayaking or just finishing a book or writing one (wireless internet throughout the house). The island has a movie theatre, movie rental (and you've got cable as well) and many concerts, performances and gatherings to keep you as active as you like.
While you're relaxing, the lavender will continue to be harvested and there will be people dropping by at the U-Cut stand - the entrance is far away from the house. You're welcome to wander down and learn a little about lavender - we dry, we shuck, we make wreaths and lavender oil. Depending on when you're here, we're happy to have you join in.
Please visit our website for more photos and more info - see you in the lavender!

My cousins and I ( 10 of us ) shared this very special home when we came to Vashon for a celebration of my sister's life. She passed away February 1, and her memorial service was being held at Camp Burton, just down the road. It was the perfect place for all of us to reconnect and bond. The kitchen is a cook's dream, and we so enjoyed it! The view of the gardens and the bay is spectacular. The house is so warm and comfortable, and the beds, wonderful. Thank you Cathy for creating such a beautiful home and making it available for us to share.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Lavender Hill Farm was a perfect place for a "girls getaway". We all had our own beds, lots of space, and privacy if you needed it. The house was beautiful and lots of amenities that many rentals don't provide. We were met by the owner's representative on arrival and she was very welcoming and helpful. We had to call her in the evening for help with the heat (our problem in working the thermostat) and she was very nice about helping us. We have been in rentals where help is not always available. We loved the Thai Restaurant -- be sure and get reservations. We would also recommend touring the Monastery on the island but you need to call ahead to make arrangements.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My two brothers and I grew up in Tacoma, WA, but are now spread across the U.S. We rented Lavender Hill Farms for a family reunion and we all thoroughly enjoyed our time there. The house is very well appointed and comfortable. We have rented many houses over the years and this house has the best appointed kitchen of any -- both in terms of cookware as well as basic kitchen staples. The house is beautifully decorated and very comfortable for large groups. We invited relatives to join us for two dinners and we were able to accommodate 13 people one night and 18 people another night for dinner on the porch. The view is beautiful and the surroundings are very peaceful. The warm days and cool nights made for a wonderful vacation.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: We are delighted you had such a good time - and thanks for the suggestion of adding a cocktail shaker to our kitchen staples - martinis anyone? Cathy and Tom

This is a beautiful, comfortable, well-appointed home in a gorgeous setting on an actual lavender farm. The photos don't do it justice. The large covered porch overlooks the lavender beds, lawn, and gardens, as well as Quartermaster Harbor. It's perfect for reading, relaxing, and conversation, and the large table makes outdoor dining a pleasure. And when the day is clear, there's a stunning view of Mt. Rainier. The kitchen had everything you could want or need, and there's plenty of room for more than one cook. The bedrooms are charming and well decorated; beds are comfortable with wonderful down covers and lots of lovely quilts, and there are an abundance of very nice towels and linens. The only things we found in the least bit odd were the completely open bathroom in the master suite, and having no bathroom in the lower level. Even a half bath would help given there are two bedrooms and the farm's workrooms down there. But this didn't detract from the enjoyment of the house nor our stay. We would recommend it to anyone and would enjoy coming back.Recommended for: Age 55+, people with disabilities, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

My family and I have stayed at several different houses on Vashon Island, and Lavender Hill Farm is definitely our favorite. Comfortable, spacious, great views, wonderful gardens. A great kitchen for cooking and socializing. The view from the huge covered porch is second to none. Great location for beach walking at Jensen Point and Point Robinson. Our kids love roasting marshmallows in the fire pit. We have stayed at this house multiple times and plan on returning. Five stars for sure.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, people with disabilities, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: We are delighted when our guests become regulars and start their own traditions, whether it's marshmallow roasting, baking, scavenger hunts, or reading by the fire. Thanks and welcome back!

This is our second summer staying at the Lavender farm and we just have the most lovely time. The house is perfect- the kitchen and all of its killer appliances, the decor (so homey and comfy and pristine), the layout (we have three kids and it was just great even when grandparents visited), the overall feel is just incredibly relaxing and comfortable. The views are spectacular, the lavender farm is such fun to run in and gather lavender and spend time just taking time to breathe and inhaling amazing scents, the location is ideal- we walked to the coffee stand every day for treats, we went to the beach right down the block and we kayaked from the park nearby. Honestly, this is the nicest house I have ever stayed in- it is very hard for us to pack up and leave but we do so knowing we'll book another week or two next year. The owner Catherine is so attentive and helpful and now has become a friend. Stay here and you'll be coming back annually- if you are lucky!!.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: We love having return guests and hope to be a summer tradition for our visitors!

This beautiful farmhouse was charming and comfortable for our family of eight with adult children. We didn't expect perfection, but we certainly got it. The house and property are breathtaking. Vashon Island is a quiet/quirky place to visit and ferry transportation made it easy to take in Seattle and Tacoma. This was our first vacation in the Northwest...and we have fallen in love with the island, the property and the region.Recommended for: Age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2006
About the owner: Tom works as the head of a labor union local in Northern California and Cathy is an actor who also runs a non-profit providing education in Cambodia, where we adopted our two younger daughters. We also have a grown daughter and son. Tom is also a writer of slang books - we live in Berkeley, California during the school year and hope to retire to Vashon eventually. We have learned a lot about lavender in four years and love our time on Vashon.
Why the Owner Chose Vashon Island:
I've been visiting Vashon since 1994, when good friends moved here from Los Angeles. It's a very special place. Tom and I bought a small cottage in 2003 and fell in love with the lavender farm when we came to pick lavender. In 2006, we were lucky enough to buy it. We kept the previous owners' tradition of opening a U-Cut stand, and have learned a lot about lavender in four years. For the last three years, we have participated in the lavender farm tour, a wonderful weekend with 2500 visitors coming to enjoy the lavender. This year, the tour is on hiatus, so we're able to offer vacation rental weeks. Each year, we feel we can pick up with friends and routines. We love our time on Vashon.
The Unique Benefits at this Farmhouse:
What do I love most about Lavender Hill Farm? The view is amazing - Mt. Rainier, the boats in the harbor, the lavender. We think of it as Maine and Provence rolled into one, with snow-capped mountains as a bonus. It's quiet and the stars shine bright. I love working with the lavender - very relaxing. The house is big - it's so cheerful and so many places to curl up with a book. There's room for many guests (we had 55 last summer - just friends visiting!) and the porch is the perfect gathering place! I soak in the claw foot tub in the master bedroom and then sink into the king-size bed. Truly a vacation from our lives in the Bay Area - and no traffic! It's also so easy to get here. The airport is a 20 minute cab ride or 30 minute bus ride to the ferry, and the island bus comes to our corner (and sometimes right past the house. The island has good restaurants, an arts scene, pools, and lots of opportunities for biking and hiking.
