Edgartown house description
Hidden away at the end of a private right-of-way, this unique, custom-built home is only a ten minute walk from the harbor front and downtown shops and restaurants. There is nearby access to the bicycle path to South Beach or stay at home and enjoy the large, private yard.
The interior features post and beam construction with oak beams and wood paneling, beautifully tiled floors and many antiques. Furnishings are attractive and comfortable and the house includes all standard amenities. Outdoors you can relax in the hammock, grill some fresh bluefish, eat on the patio or enjoy the outside shower after a day at the beach. The yard is secluded and surrounded by trees, with flower beds and a well-maintained lawn. There is plenty of off-street parking so leave the car at home and walk into town for dinner or an ice cream and ride your bikes to State or South Beach. This is a one of a kind home with many extras, lots of quiet and privacy and a great, great location.

I vacationed in this house with six of my women friends - a totally girls vacation - no husbands or kids allowed. The house was extremely cozy and the kitchen was well equipped. Every bed in the house was comfortable- every morning all the crew expressed how well they slept. The backyard was a private paradise in which you felt so removed from the hustle and bustle of the crowds - a nice hammock to nap in, a umbrella table to eat at, chaise lounge to relax,in, a awesome gas grill to cook on etc..the outdoor shower was charming and was used often after a quick trip to the beach. Though you were in a quiet peaceful setting, it was quick jaunt into Edgartown. One woman in our group walked into town every morning as part of her routine. The beaches (South and State) were so close as well as the grocery store and other necessities. The owners were extremely helpful when planning our vacation and communicating when we would email questions. I would definitely go back again!

A week in Heaven!
A week in Heaven!
The location of this house is fantastic! You can stroll into Edgartown in less than 10 minutes, it's a short ride (or run!) to South Beach, and you're on the bike path before you can blink, yet it is secluded, private, and quiet - it really is down a quiet country path and you would hardly know you have neighbors. You are basically in Edgartown without being "in town." The yard is spacious, private and pretty with hammock, outdoor furniture and a great gas grill - and a really lovely outdoor shower! There is ample parking - but you don't even need the car if you bike or take the bus, the property is so well situated. The house is charming, comfortable and totally well-kept and clean, lovingly furnished with antiques, with all the amenities you could want except perhaps air conditioning - which is not even necessary here (and we were there during a particularly hot week) because the house is well-designed with many windows and ceiling fans. It's super-comfortable (we've stayed with friends renting at twice the price and not been as comfortable as here!) The living areas all look out on the private yard with many windows and there's a great sense of the outdoors on the first floor. The kitchen/dining area is a great communal space, but there are separate living areas if the grown-ups and the kids can't agree on the program or if somebody wants to read rather than watch TV. Sleeping areas are private and quiet, separated by staircases. It's not "fancy," but this house is a really great value. The owners are conscientious and caring without being neurotic. Obviously, if you're looking for the Captain Morse House, this isn't for you, but if you're cool and casual looking for a great location and a fun place to stay, this is it!

"When I asked my 14-year-old, who has visited summers since he was a toddler, what makes this place special, the list was long: “It’s right in the middle of everything! (secluded and convenient), near the bike path, walk to Edgartown, Mad Martha’s, the Katama store, the movies; near Dippin’ Donuts, State Beach, and the Chappy ferry; run or scooter to South Beach; beds are comfy, it’s pretty with pretty trees, and the killer fishing spots!” Returning for our 11th season, the time we spend here is our favorite time of the year. We've had fun watching our boys become avid fishermen - who compete against my husband's childhood friend in our "derby" where Chilmark Chocolates are the grand prize : ) "

Year Purchased: 1981
About the owner: We are a retired couple who built this custom, post and beam home in 1981-82. We have raised two children and lived on the Vineyard full time since then. We own and manage the property and do the landscaping, yard maint. and turn-overs ourselves.
Why the Owner Chose Edgartown:
We chose to live and work on the Vineyard and have developed the house as a weekly summer rental. We have been renting seasonally and now weekly since 1985.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
It is a very quiet and secluded location yet a short walk to the best parts of downtown Edgartown. The yard is private, shady and the gardens are very pretty in the summer.
