We rented the Jolly Tar House for 5 nights for our bi-annual Thanksgiving getaway. We had 26 people (14 adults and 12 children) and the house was a perfect fit for us. Plenty of beds, sheets, towels, and sitting areas. After years of renting houses together as a family, we've learned there are a few things we absolutely require: a room for the boys to play video games, a spacious and safe backyard for the kids to run wild, and a couch in the kitchen for the ladies to lounge and chat while we cook. This house met all our needs and more! There were plenty of tables to spread out on to eat and do crafts and puzzles and games and more. We spent hours upon hours on the beautiful back porch watching our kids play tag and soccer and dance on the stage. We even took a few hours to get away to the Calaveras Big Trees and a stop for fresh pies on the side of the road. We all agreed as we were packing up that it was the best and most relaxing Thanksgiving getaway we've had in the 16 year history of this tradition. We are already anticipating renting the facility again for our next family getaway! The only thing we would advise is if you are planning on cooking large meals and are particular to your own pans and knives, make sure to bring them. The baking pans and cookie sheets were lacking, but the pots and pans for cooking were plentiful. We also were struggling to chop large quantities of vegetables with the less than sharp knives. But this is just us being particular, we know to bring our own supplies next time. Other than that, everything was perfect! Thanks again for the use of your home! It truly is a wonderfully welcoming and comfortable place!Recommended for: Families with young children.
Owner response: Great, I am so glad you had a wonderful time. I just personally went through the kitchen and replaced some of the cooking wear. I will add some more baking sheets, and sharper knives, thank you for letting me know. There is a lot of love at the Jolly House, thanks for being part of it.

We had a family reunion with parents, grandparents, great grandparents and 7 children under the age of 6, there were lots of toys, books and safe places for them to play. It also had enough spaces for quietness if it was needed. The upstairs suite only has curtains to separate the King Bed, Double Bed, and 2 twins and you have to go through the room with two trundle beds to get to those rooms. That was a bit of a surprise and made for some interesting communal living but we made it work. If you're O.C.D. about clean this is probably not the place for you. There were a lot of stores that have closed up in Angel's Camp, however there is still a lot going on in Murphy's only 20 mins. away. There is a Starbucks 1 block away which was a HUGE hit for our Seattle folks! All in all it worked perfectly for what we were doing and the owner's were super helpful.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, people with disabilities, sightseeing, age 55+, families with young children.
Owner response: We usually do clean good enough for someone who is OCD. I have a check off list the housekeeper have to do with over 200 items on it. I know before these visitors came, the Quality check wasn't done, and the work was split between three housekeepers, so back to making sure the QA checks are done each time. We like Quirky, it's what makes the Jolly House so special. It was built over a 150 year time span. Wishing everyone wonderful vacations. ~Diane Jolly House Owner

Our annual Women's Retreat was held at the Jolly house this year, and I received nothing but compliments on choosing this house. We had 14 women attend - with room for at least 6 more in beds. The kitchen and outdoor areas were perfect. The house had amazing charm, plenty of parking, tons of conveniences from Board Games, to soaps, to towels/blankets, extra mattresses. Fully stocked. We will likely be renting it again.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway.

What a great house! We held our Bunko Night for Calaveras High School Parents Club here. On Friday night we came and had snacks and had a great time visiting and playing Bunko. Diane was very gracious and had the house all ready for us. Some of us stayed the night. Jolly Tar has a ton of space for everyone. We had 30 people who participated in Bunko. The house is decorated with sweet country charm. I love the outside yard and stage area. I think next year we'll have to have some karaoke after Bunko. Of course we love the area in Calaveras County. So much to do for all ages. Wine tasting is nearby and loads of shops! Diane, thank you for being so hospitable, we'll see you again next year for sure!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car.

This vacation was fantastic. Centrally located to all sorts of different activities, the Jolly House is a great place to stay when visiting the gold country area. The house is perfect for a small family and can also accomodate large groups with a kitchen stocked full of cookware for groups big and small and beds/bedrooms galore. I loved the art work and the cool little specialty items found throughout the house. There is also a huge backyard with a stage area and dress up clothes that kept the kids entertained for hours. We were able to get great videos that we will enjoy for a long time to come.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, people with disabilities, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners.

I threw a friend's thirtieth birthday party here, and it was great. The property is so unique and has a ton of character. There was plenty of room for everyone, and the back yard was perfect for hanging out and having a blast. If you're planning on cooking for a huge group, just write to make sure you have any equipment you might need. All questions were very promptly answered, and it was very easy getting all the info we needed. I highly recommend the Jolly Tar.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway.

We have a great time there for over 20 adults retreat. the rooms are clean and spacious and the kitchen are well equipped for a large group. But one thing need to be improve is the garbage area have lots of flies around because of the trash cans are too small and not well covered, animals like cats will come to make there a mess and the flies will stay around. That's try i didn't give a stars.Recommended for: Adventure seekers.

Clean Great communication with questions answered quickly Great location Would have rated it "excellent" except there was no coffee and we had to go out and get our own. Phone reception was spotty and it would have been nice to have been told it might be as we were using the facility for a business retreat.Recommended for: Families with young children, girls getaway.

The Unique Benefits at this Farmhouse:
Over Easter we had a family get-together and had a lot of people spend the night. It was so much fun, we had a sing-a-long around the camp fire BBQ pit in the backyard, and the next morning a wonderful Easter breakfast for 40 people and egg hunt. Since Jan 2010 we have had 4 birthday parties and 6 other parties for my family and friends at the house - it was pure joy. It's great when you can all stay together and cook meals and have fun.
