Montmorillon townhome description
Come and get lost in my beautiful home filled with warmth and personality. Completely refurbished with new designer furniture, totally repainted in neutral shades, allow yourself to be encircled with the heavy linen drapes to close out the bright French sunlight allowing you to sleep in and enjoy a real break from reality. New beds, mattresses, and bed linens in every room will provide you with that rejuvenating night’s repose, only to wake renewed to fresh croissants and hot coffee to be sipped alongside the flowing 'Gartempe River' under your wisteria-draped pergola. Pick plums, kiwis, apples, or pears from your personal orchard to round out your breakfast and get ready to enjoy lunch by wandering to the local market less that two minute’s stroll away, where your only problem will be trying not to buy too much. Your selection could include homemade goat cheese and jams, organic vegetables, fresh chickens, sublime sausages, crunchy bread, mouth watering mussels, only imagine it and it is there only fresher!! Round it off with a good bottle of wine and get ready for your afternoon nap.
The Master Bedroom is light and airy with a four poster queen size bed and a sumptuous new linens, the large windows give a view onto one of the local church spires. There are gorgeous wooden floors, an ample closet, and high ceilings. Library/Guest Room has two queen/double beds and is surrounded by 18th century book shelves. And it has amazing views of both the church spire and the other direction over the river and up the hill side. The second Guest Room has a day bed which is a twin that expands to a queen size, perched at the top of an ancient set of wooden stairs and enclosed by windows and French doors allowing for a view over the river. The living room had views in both directions so that you can watch both the sunrise and the sunset over Montmorrillion and enjoy the gentle breeze from the windows or the crisp fire from the wood stove depending on the season. This room allows for use as a fourth bedroom with a sofa sleeper that is actually very comfortable and creates even more space for vacationers.
For the more adventuresome, there is kayaking for kids and parents alike at 'Lathus' or perhaps horse riding, or a trip to real farm that allows both little and big people to get up-close and personal with cows, goats, ducks, chickens, and the farm way of life. A little further down the road is a favorite restaurant of mine, as just perfect for a family-friendly meal as it is for a romantic escape. And they will accommodate even the finickiest of the eaters as I know from personal experience; my ten-year-old who hates everything and my fifteen-year-old vegetarian and even I, who enjoys a slightly more sophisticated repast, were all in food heaven , while tucked in a wonderful, wooded glade with the river wandering by.
Or perhaps you would enjoy a picnic laid out in the gardens of the 'Chateau DeTouffou', owned and restored by the Ogilvie family, after your personal tour of the chateau. Follow it up by the wander through the medieval town, of 'Chatellerault' and if you still have energy in need of burning, you could see the eagle spectacle found at the center of town in 'Chauvigny'. Or perhaps shopping is on your mind. If so, there is the Limoges seconds outlet where you can pick up simply white dishes for less than a euro and gorgeous platters and serving vessels for a couple euros more. And for the French lingerie lovers, there is the 'Aubade' factory outlet in 'St Savin'. There you can mix a moment at the monastery with their superb frescos (a unesco heritage site) with a moment of lingerie shopping with a fitter so good all she has to do is look at you and she instantly knows what will fit you and what will make you look your best. Or perhaps 'Poitiers' is more your style where you can get a taste of Parisian fashion all with the ease of a small town, alongside a myriad of churches, art galleries, restaurants and one of the largest universities in France. All within a half hour drive from Montmorillon
Kir Royale, anyone? One of my favorite indulgences in the late afternoon is to head to the Terrasse in Montmorillon with new and old friends, where you can enjoy conversation or music or just watch the river slide by. Or perhaps head to 'the Lucullus restaurant' famed for its cuisine and have a superb French dinner without the Parisian prices. And don’t forget the macaroon factory that has delicacies to eat now and treats to bring home., all just steps from your home.
For the hikers, fishers, and bicyclists, there are trails, fish, and paths galore to keep you fit and active to burn off at least a few of those calories you will enjoy consuming. Before you tuck yourself onto the train or into your car to leave your little slice of paradise, make sure you head to my favorite bakery and have an almost indecent chocolate mousse; it tastes so good it will actually seduce your taste buds and hopefully tempt you into making a return visit so you can enjoy even more rest and relaxation and more undiscovered spots waiting to be discovered.

What a find!
What a find!
I have just returned from a wonderful relaxing stay in this riverside home in Montmorillon - what a treat to wake up in the morning and have breakfast on the terrace watching the river flow by and be amused by the antics of the ducks waddling about! The house lends itself to a lovely slow holiday pace reading books in the quiet living room or watching a DVD undisturbed on the comfortable sofa. We ate lunch, and dinner most days by the riverside terrace eating top quality local produce from the town market - delicious cheeses, vegetables and of course sampling the best of local wine. The house managers were friendly and efficient talking me through the specifics of the house and filling me in on the highlights of the town. I loved - the quaint little streets abounding with bookshops and huckster shops with all sorts of interesting things to browse through. During our stay we had the privilege of attending an excellent perfomance of Rigoletto in Montmorillon so I intend to be back again next year for a similar super experience! Really LOVE this place and couldn't recommed it highly enough.

Not as described but charming
Not as described but charming
My husband and I are very fond of old houses and this home has plenty of charm. In addition, the town and the area are very interesting to discover and we recommend the region highly. We have one critique. In our opinion the advertised description of the home did not match the property. For example, there was no working “Television: large flat screen, Stereo, Satellite / Cable, VCR, Video Library, DVD Player” as copied from the website under the heading of “Entertainment”. Nor did we find the house “Completely refurbished with new designer furniture, totally repainted in neutral shades,” as also taken from the VRBO website description. It would also have been helpful if there was a contact person (other than an efficient key exchange) for basic questions like how to work the heating system.

What a great place in Montmorillon!
What a great place in Montmorillon!
This is a lovely place in a great town with much to do within walking distance. The garden and the views are fantastic. The traditional look on the outside contrasted to the modern conveniences inside make it ideal. Can't say enough about the house! The "medieval" town and the surrounding area were fascinating. It is easy to reach by train. Car rentals were very cheap. We found a system of small roads/paved trails that we suitable for exploring by car, bike, or hiking. Next time I'll be cycling some of those great back roads!

On the banks of the river
On the banks of the river
I stayed here in May 2012 and had what can only be described as a heavenly time. This is a big rambling house with lofty ceilings in the reception room and in the form of a courtyard at the rear which opens out onto the river. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were taken at the table under the vine-covered pergola which overlooks the river. The total peace here was broken only by the buzz of the bees in the flowers, the bells of the church and the plop of the fishermen's hooks landing in the river. If you are looking for complete relaxation in a beautiful and peaceful spot then this is for you. Montmorillon is the kind of small French town where you quickly get to know the locals - in the nice restaurants, the boulangerie and the weekly market. An unspoiled corner of provincial France - I look forward to returning.

Charming town & lovely French villa
Charming town & lovely French villa
As a flight attendant I have traveled the world and been to so many countries. This charming village was the perfect place to relax, enjoy the french country side and eat the marvelous french food. Mont was such a neat place to visit. We found so much to do there !! The locals were actually very friendly and welcoming. Almost everyone speaks english but loved it when we tried out our French. We took calligraphy classes, and the painting class was held on the old bridge overlooking the river, we felt so French !! It was so nice to be able to walk to everything! The huge market 'Le Clerc' was within walking distance. Its hard to leave there without one of every kind of cheese, wine, and bread. They had everything you could ever want! The foie gras was delicious and so inexpensive ! There is a wonderful wood fired pizzziaria just a block down from the villa and a great pub 'La Terrase' on the river just steps away from the villa. There were so many places to eat but we really enjoyed being in the garden grilling out and listening to the flowing river. The villa was marvelous! It was nestled right on the river bank and had such a peaceful and private garden area! We loved the old charm of the villa with its wood floors and hug windows looking down on the river. The beds were so comfortable. We were there in the summer and could sleep with our windows open listening to the river and enjoy the cool breeze! The feather duvets kept us quite warm as the temperature dropped ( yes..it got chilly at night and we loved it). The kitchen was so french!! Thank goodness for the washer/dryer combo as we really were thankful we could wash clothes!! We rented a car for only 5 US$ a day which included insurance but make reservations early. There is a bike rental store around the corner too! My kids loved the town. The bakery (one of many) was just a few blocks away and the girls loved walking down each morning and getting the fresh breads and sweets!! The local market sets up twice a week with fresh veggies, fruits and meats. We went back to Mont again last winter. It does get cold but we loved it too! My children wanted to stay and never come home!! We hope to get back there soon. I am an avid cyclist and can't wait to bring my trek to ride the country side. The location is great, about 1.5hrs from Paris and a short walk from the train station to the villa. WE LOVE IT!!! Tammy, Emma and Olivia, Atlanta Ga, USA

About: I am an Irish woman who lives in America and misses Europe. I have lived all over the U.S. started in Boston, made it to Maine, took up residence in the wilds of Alaska only to return to Florida. Can you guess that I enjoy an adventure? I also wanted my daughters to enjoy a life that is quite difference for them, to steep them in another language and culture while they are still young enough to absorb it. Even though I have only been a part of this community for a short while already I can see its affect on them and their new found appreciation for a new way of life, culture, and language. I was drawn to this house originally by my sisters who have been looking to buy in France for many years. They have scoped out many different locations only to a light on Montmorillon. Some were too hot, or too cold, or too Spanish, or too German but just like in Goldilocks this one was just right. It met the rigorous criteria of ease of access by train or plane, it has weekly market, it has a nice size population without being too big or too small. We can fly into Paris CDG, walk downstairs in the airport, buy a ticket for the train, jump on, and arrive in Montmorillon a few hours later all refreshed after a comfortable nap and a lovely lunch.
The Unique Benefits at this Townhome:
This summer will be our fifth family vacation there and it has created a wonderful time together with family and friends; to catch up on rest and relaxation, to forget about CNN and the world news, and to simply learn to breath again. Last summer we traveled ten minutes to Ledorat for a market that starts at night every wonderful food that you can imagine, incredibly fresh, cooked to order, washed down with fresh juice or wonderful wine. All out in the open air, with music and dancing, children and laughter. We are planning every time it is on this summer. Montmorillon is what you make it. It can be where you rest and relax or where you recoup after hiking or biking, or where you listen to music under the stars. For me and my family it is a magical place. I can only hope that it is for you too.
