Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2007
Owners Jon & Helene have been in hospitality for over 20 years. Jon is a restaurateur & chef, and Helene is an international flight attendant and Chicago Architectural Foundation river cruise docent.
Why the Owner Chose Roscoe Village
We have been neighborhood residents for 15 years and have not only enjoyed raising a family while seeing a positive transformation of Chicago during that time, but also of the Roscoe Village neighborhood and its amenities. We own and operate two award-winning and acclaimed restaurants here, and realized we had the ideal setting for a bed & breakfast style vacation rental conveniently located right in the heart of our community.
The Unique Benefits of this Apartment
While staying at Sopra Volo (means "above Volo" in Italian), guests have immediate access to more than a dozen dining options to fit any budget, pretty sidewalk cafes & hidden backyard garden patios, as well as unique independently owned retail shops & boutiques (also a Starbucks on our block housed in a converted former Motorcycle Cafe "The Ace Cafe").
Within blocks there are family friendly parks, a baseball diamond, public pool, and a park district field house (offering tennis courts & a basketball court), as well as kayaking nearby.
The neighborhood is extremely walk-able, upper-middle class and safe, has seen a wave of renovations over the last decade, and just two blocks away there is a 100+ year old Pencil Factory that has been converted to lofts, with original factory-worker row houses still intact located on adjacent blocks.
Public transportation is easy from Sopra Volo and includes the Damen bus just steps out the front door (a direct 10 minute ride to the heart of Bucktown & Wicker Park), Chicago's famous "EL" train at the Paulina stop just three blocks away, plus the Belmont or Addison (direct to Wrigley Field- Home of the Cubs) Street Bus just two blocks away.
If you visit us in the summer, Wrigley Field is just a 15-20 minute walk (about a mile and a half) through residential neighborhoods and tree lined streets, filled with 100 year old plus houses.
Finally, the guest suite is located directly above our acclaimed wine bar, Volo. It is beautifully designed with an urban chic interior and rustic hidden backyard cabana garden in which we from time to time host weddings. Advance VIP reservations are available to Sopra Volo guests on request. Additionally, the unit is located directly across the street from our celebrated casual brunch spot, Kitsch'n on Roscoe. Decked out in colorful 1970's retro dinette sets, and filled with assorted retro and vintage decor, Kitsch'n has been featured in Bon Apetit Magazine and on $40 a Day with Rachel Ray.

We had a great stay at Sopra Volo Guest Suite. We had a quick vacation before taking our son to college. We had plenty of room for four of us. Jon was a great host from the beginning emails through our time there. He did everything he could to ensure that we enjoyed our stay. We enjoyed breakfast at Kitsch'n and dessert at Volo. Jon even helped us get to a great hamburger one evening by phone. I would recommend this place to anyone.

Our stay at Sopra Volo was fantastic! The space was perfect even for our 4 young boys. They loved the movies, the playstation, and Guitar Hero! We never felt crowded. Clean, well-maintained. Easy access to neighborhood restaurants with great food! The wine bar below the apartment has amazing food and will deliver up to you. Great for us since we had children with us. Overall great experience and a great value for the money!

I loved that this rental included all taxes and cleaning fees. This location was great! My husband and I came to Chicago for our 10th anniversary and loved the neighborhood feel and the close proximity to the trains and buses. The 4 block walk to the brown line was easy and we always felt safe, even walking back after midnight Friday night. We walked up a couple of blocks to Addison and caught a bus that took us to Wrigley Field for a Cubs game. I'd recommend the bus/train passes that you can buy to get around. At $14 for 3 days, we got our money's worth! Although we never met with Jon, his staff was excellent and gave us great suggestions on things to do in downtown. When we checked in that first night we were surprised to be sent upstairs with a bottle of wine. Yummy! I would say the one draw back is that it is above a wine bar, which was quite noisy each evening, but especially on the Saturday night when they had a wedding downstairs which lasted until midnight. The contract does warn that this may happen, but when we booked we didn't know that there would be a private function (and we booked just two weeks before arriving). My other comment has nothing to do with anything that can be changed, but if you haven't ever stayed in a building like this, be prepared that the only windows that let in any light are on the front of the building in the living room, so the rest of the apartment is quite dark. We never did get a chance to eat/drink at the wine bar downstairs becuase we were saving it for Saturday night, and didn't realize the restaurant would be closed for the private party. We did eat at Kitsch'n and Orange across the street, and both were very good. I'd recommend both of these restaurants. Thanks for a great vacation!

The owner Jon Young is great. He's very helpful. The guest suite is perfect. Everything you need while you are away from home. I would recommend this place to everyone visiting Chicago and you want to stay in a quaint village. Great eating in walking distance and pubs. Very Clean and well maintained. I would re-rent in a heartbeat.
