What sets this house apart is its private dock and large swimmable shoreline. At Whipkins Cove, you can swim in a shallow area (gets deep gradually) near fire circle or plunge into deep water at the dock. One of the few areas around lake where you feel safe swimming out from shore.

This is a great home for multi-generational groups or two families vacationing together. Be sure to check out the video tour (with guided audio).

Home has three distinct living 'zones.' Top floor has master bed (king) with private bath (soaking tub and separate shower) and loft (w/ built-in double bed).

Middle floor has open kitchen/dining/living area (w/fireplace), 1/2 bath off kitchen, and master bedroom (king) with private bath (shower only).

Lower floor has mudroom with extra-large capacity W/D, 1/2 bath, entertainment area with sofa/love seat/fireplace/50-inch TV, and a large bedroom with two sets of bunkbeds and private bath (tub/shower combo and double sinks).

All you need to bring is food and your clothes everything else has been thought of and is waiting for you. I can honestly say that I have never been on a vacation that had everything covered. Lore was such a gracious host and we couldn’t have asked for any more than what awaited us. This cabin is better than a 5 star hotel and if relaxing is your thing then this is the place. Running my own business adds for a lot of stress and Whipkin’s Cove was the best medicine for me and my family. Part of me wants to keep this place a secret but everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy this experience. Discussions are under way for next year and if all goes according to plan we will return to this oasis in TN

What an awesome cabin! We spent our thanksgiving week with our whole family - a large group, and we had such a great time! Plenty of room for all the adults and kids. The lower level is perfect for the little ones and has everything to keep them entertained. The kitchen is fantastic and well stocked and Thanksgiving dinner was perfect, there is absolutely nothing in that kitchen that you would miss or need! The views are stunning and the relaxation perfect. JUST LOVED THIS PLACE. Lore and her husband have done a fantasic job with this cabin! We look forward to going back in the summer with our older kiddos!

Nevermind that the house is beautiful and that it is located on a very peaceful part of the lake -- the amenities really put it over the top. There was no need to travel anywhere else -- we had everything we needed to have a great time. We took advantage of the very well-stocked kitchen, the kayaks, the life vests, the dock, the grill, the fire pit, the wifi... The property is very well thought-out, with many touches that made our stay relaxing and comfortable. Our kids enjoyed the movies and the toys. And, oh yeah, we enjoyed the lake quite a bit too! ;-)

The kids have voted this as their "favorite vacation ever", and while we are sad to leave, we are already planning on a return trip next year. The house is so well thought out that nothing was lacking, from the first aid kit to the life vests to the printer used for printing directions to local areas. The toy closet and movie collection were really enjoyed, although most of the time was spent outside on the lake, swimming, kayaking, and fishing. We visited several area attractions, including Grandfather Mtn, and Boone, NC, and went whitewater rafting out of Elizabethton, but by far, the favorite activities were done right here at the lake house. We would definitely recommend this property to friends/family. The home and land are beautiful.

Being avid campers for many years, we wanted to try a cabin this year where we could still enjoy the outdoors. We found Whipkins Cove and so very happy we did. The house is everything that we anticipated. Lori and her husband have thought of everything. The lower level family room (for kids) has everything to keep them happy. I enjoyed cooking in the well stocked kitchen, it ended up raining a lot so we cooked a lot. The kitchen came in handy. Served up some great meals for the week. The views are spectacular, we did have a wet week but were still able to enjoy the kayaks, had a great fire one night with some awesome star gazing sights, and tried our hands at fishing every day. This is truly a house that you don’t need to leave for entertainment, the house offers everything needed to have an enjoyable and relaxing vacation. Thank you for your hospitality. Spring Break 2011

After 18 years of renting vacation homes all over the US, I think we've finally found the PERFECT one! We usually rent a house in Hatteras for Thanksgiving, but decided this year to try something closer to my family so that they wouldn't have to drive so far. Whipkins Cove met all of our requirements and then some....! For the 8 of us, 4 kids, 4 adults, we never wanted for anything more the entire week. The lake, the kayaks, the well-equipped kitchen and as others have mentioned, all of the extras. Lore has thought of everything! The house is spacious yet cozy. The lake is calm yet full of lots of things to do. The outdoor living areas really helps us connect with nature. The house is well-equipped without being pretentious. Thanksgiving dinner was perfect! We had everything we needed! I almost hate telling anyone else how nice it is just because we want Whipkins Cove to be available when we want to come back!

Our family of 6 had the honor of staying at Whipkins Cove end of July 2010. The place is simply amazing, beautiful log home with fantastic amenities. The home is immaculate, but also very family friendly (toy closet, no glass baubles, etc.) And more importantly, the owners are truly wonderful people: committed to making your stay stress-free. While there are a lot of things to do in the area, we thoroughly enjoyed the cabin and the lake. This lake is awesome! Pristine water and as uncrowded as I've ever seen. Mon-Wed we spent 8-10 hours a day in/on the lake and saw a TOTAL of 4 other boats! That's on a 6,000 acre lake! And with most of the shoreline Forest Service Land, you could find secluded coves to be completely alone. The kids loved the rope swing just across the bay from the cabin (easy kayak distance) as well as the 25 foot "cliff" next to it where you jump into 80 foot of clear water (even our five year old did this). We rented a jet ski for two days from Boone Lake (we picked it up, but they will deliver) and a pontoon boat from the local marina for lake exploring one day. Nightly campfires by the lake finished each day after meals cooked in the gourmet kitchen. So much fun that while there is cable (or maybe dish) TV, all four kids didn't realize until we were leaving that they hadn't watched ANY TV the entire trip! That has to be some kind of record! Great neighbors too... when we did something stupid with our jet ski (forgot to turn on the gas and drained the battery) a neighbor not only recharged the battery for us, he gave us HIS for the day so we could have fun - unbelievable! Definitely a place to get away. You are not close to civilization. There are recommendations for eating out, but upscale restaurants are not available. We hit the grocery on the way in and stocked up, and didn't make it to the highly recommended mom and pop places listed in the comprehensive scrapbooks and guestbooks back at the cabin. In all, by far the highlight of our year, the Schneiders treat you like family, the house looks and feels like you are staying at a rich friends place, NOT a rental, with the little things provided (fishing rods, chairs, life jackets, marshmallow sticks, etc.) that make life hassle-free. Even more impressive was the follow-up afterwards to make sure that we had a good time and true heartfelt questions as to how to make their place better. Hands down and unequivocally a great place to visit!

We had the best vacation, there is a" things to do book" the owners put together that is so awesome we used it for planning eveyrthing we did from boating, hiking, shopping and eating out, they have thought of everything to make your trip memorable. Awesome views, very peaceful, porch swings and plenty of seating makes it great no matter which deck you are on. Thanks for making this a great trip!

We stayed with our friends and had a fantastic time, it flew by too quickly. The house is close to Boone and sits on a beautiful cove. If you enjoy cooking like we do, they have the best tools to create a fantastic dinner. Bedding was extremely comfortable like a 5-star hotel, plus the bathrooms were a plus. We had fun swimming off the beach and kayaking in the cove, even jumping off a cliff across the way. This house is suitable for young and old. The gathering space was ample and everyone could have down time by heading out to one of the decks and no one would be in your private space. We had teenagers entoe and these were their comments: "The downstairs bedroom along with family room was very teen friendly. Lots of videos and Wii game station. We all would get together to watch a movie or play games in the family room. It was great because when we got tired our bed was only a few feet away. Also, if you like to fish they have fishing poles, all you need are the worms and a license."

Thank you for creating the perfect family vacation spot for anyone who enjoys the outdoors, but prefers not to "rough it." While staying at Whipkins Cove, we went boating, fishing, horseback riding, white water rafting, kayaking and cycling. We enjoyed swimming right off the cove and we sat around the bonfire almost every night! While enjoying all of these activities, we lived in the lap of luxury in your beautiful home. Our family will remember this vacation forever!!

                  Year Purchased: 2009

About the owner: Our family has long dreamed of creating a vacation rental home specifically for the people who visit. We travel the globe for work and pleasure and take notes and ideas from each place we stay in. We jumped at the opportunity to buy Whipkins Cove (named by the former owners, who used a combination of their last names) and transform it into an amazing place by moving walls, adding dormers and giving it upscale touches. More than $100k later (ouch!), the home is completely remodeled and designed for maximum guest enjoyment (ie: lots of room to spread out and a lot of luxury touches). Taking ideas from our favorite hotel chains (including Marriott and Ritz Carlton), we furnished the beds, kitchen, bathrooms, etc., with amenities that would make the house comfortable and memorable. Now, as we enter our first rental season, we're blown away by the interest Whipkins Cove has already generated (including bookings made when it was still a construction mess). If Whipkins Cove is a VRBO success, we have our sights on other potential VRBO properties, including another cabin, this one located near the North Carolina ski resorts.

Why the Owner Chose Watauga Lake:
Watauga Lake is beginning to capture attention of nature-loving travelers from around the globe. To us, that meant it would be a great investment opportunity. So far, that's been true. We've gotten inquiries from several Midwestern states, Florida, New England and even Europe. The kicker? Very few of the people contacting us had ever been to Watauga Lake before 2010.

The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
The waterfront is amazing. It ranges from peaceful to party (depending on the season and joviality of the boaters passing by). I love that we have both shallow-water and deep-water (40-feet-plus) areas right off shore. The shallow area is protected from cove boat traffic by a giant rock and tree, located about 50 feet off shore. The rock keeps boats from coming too close to shore (or they'll crash into it) and gives children a safe place to swim.
