Year Purchased: 2004
About the owner: What more can we say ~ we honeymooned in the Smokies! And we both fell in love all over again - with the Great Smokies! Never missing a chance to return to those beautiful mountains, we spent many vacations there, as a couple, with friends and family, and then with our children, exploring, hiking, rock-jumping at Chimney park, picnicing, playing in the river, horseback riding, biking Cades Cove, tubing, visiting Cherokee, occasionally crossing paths with a bear, and more! It didn't take us long to decide we wanted to have a place in the Smokies and eventually purchased our little half-acre in Wears Valley, which we discovered quite by accident one day as we were out exploring the area. (You never know where a little mountain road will lead and we seldom pass-up a chance to 'take the road less traveled'). In 2004 we completed construction of Whisperwind and have been sharing it, and the Smokies, with our guests ever since. We'd be delighted to count you among them!
Why the Owner Chose Wears Valley:
Because of our enjoyment of the entire Smokies area and all that the GSMNP has to offer, when a little piece of land came up for sale just one mile from the Wears Valley/Metcalf entrance into the National Park, we couldn't pass it up. For several years prior to building, when we visited the Smokies we would pack a picnic lunch, drive to our property, park the truck, hike one mile to the national park entrance and one mile more to Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area in the park -- enjoy our lunch, splash in the river, watch for bears (yes, they 'picnic' too) -- and hike back to our property after a delightful outing. We often drive to Metcalf now and walk the picnic loops - its a great exercise program! And if visitors picnicing at Metcalf only knew where that little blacktop road across the one-lane bridge leads to...!
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
Our cabin is located, as the mountain folk say, 'down looking up'. That means we get to enjoy the beautiful mountains without having to drive those 'exciting' mountain roads. Our land was once part of a tobacco farm and, while there are homes/cabins nearby, we still very much have that rural, countryside feel with old barns and scattered empty acres everywhere. We feel we truely are in the middle of it all. Take your pick...Just 1 mile from the cabin, the Wears Valley/Metcalf entrance into the GSMNP will take you to Gatlinburg along Little River Road right thru the National Park, with 'zero' traffic lights; Pigeon Forge Parkway is just 9 miles away on Hwy. 321N; and Hwy. 321S takes you to Townsend, just 5 miles, and the Townsend entrance to the National Park, including the historically popular Cades Cove. Sometimes when we are in the mood for a drive, we'll make a picnic 'loop trip', heading first to Townsend, & perhaps Cades Cove, and then, taking Little River Road from Townsend, we travel thru the National Park to Gatlinburg (passing Metcalf picnic area along the way), then on to Pigeon Forge, turning toward 'home' at Wears Valley Road in Pigeon Forge. We'll stop along the way to enjoy our picnic lunch - and whatever catches our fancy - and whatever we can catch with our camera!
