Big Sur cabin description

This is a secluded gem of a cabin with craftsman touches in a very lovely setting. It sits in a private corner of the property with magical filtered light through the oak and redwood forest. South facing with a beautiful mountain/canyon view it is very spacious (aprox 600sf) with the tinted plaster walls and arches giving it a very warm, old world feel. The quaint little bedroom is accessed by an outdoor covered staircase and has a spectacular view of the canyon. There is very nice deck space on three sides of the cabin, where one can sit in sun or shade while enjoying the abundant bird life and forest/mountain/canyon views.Or relax in our deep clawfoot tub that sits in our redwood gardenroom. Deer and quail are commonly seen, with the occasional glimpse of a bobcat or fox.
We now have a wood-fired sauna on the property, which is available to guests as well as ourselves. The sauna has a large, covered deck and sits in a quiet location shaded beneath a giant live oak, with a beautiful canyon view. The perfect place to calm your spirit and feel the bounty of nature.

The property is conveniently located halfway between Carmel/Monterey Peninsula and Big Sur Proper. Three miles inland and over 1,100 ft in elevation, we are usually above the fog , which creates unique views as it moves in and out of the canyon like slow tide. We are 4/10ths of a mile up a well maintained dirt rd.......access is rarely a problem and then only during heavy storms in the winter months at these times 4WD is recommended , though not often necessary.
This land is a place for quietude and solitude...a place to be replenished and calmed by the simple beauty of nature. We hope that our guests treat this as an opportunity to experience these wildlands with reverence and come away refreshed in a way that only nature can deliver. So please respect this quiet for your sake as well as those who live here.

This is not for those who want to be in the middle of it all. You will feel like you're in the middle of nowhere (which is exactly what we were looking for)! The property is gorgeous, serene, and Monica and Joel are brilliant hosts. Enjoy the outdoor tub and pick some lavender and rosemary on your way down to the sauna. I can't wait to come back here. One weekend was not long enough!!!

The cabin is absolutely wonderful – and even better in person than we had anticipated. The secluded setting is gorgeous, and the amenities in the house are just right. We thoroughly enjoyed breakfasts on the wraparound porch, soaks in the outdoor tub, and evenings in the wood-fired sauna. Many thanks again to the owners for offering this amazing getaway. Highly recommend.

My husband, toddler son, and I had a lovely stay in this beautiful property. I cannot fully express how incredible the property is. It is located amongst a forest of Redwoods and as you drive up to the property, the sense of peace just washes over you. The cabin is actually has much more character than the images would indicate and nothing beats the location. If you are looking for some time away from the everyday grind, THIS IS IT! A couple of notes, the stairs to the bedroom are outside the main living area (but not in any inconvenient way) and as "untraditional" as it may be, it was actually quite charming--felt like we were sleeping in an adult sized treehouse. Our son had a wonderful time exploring the plantlife and wrap-around balcony--and the outdoor tub was a nice perk! Monica and Joel are such wonderful hosts. They are incredibly responsive to any questions you have. We had a little mishap with our son falling down a step and they were very kind about providing information regarding healthcare in the area. Furthermore, our son left his favorite (and relatively expensive) car at the property and they were more than happy to mail it to us after we left. It really is a testament to their kindness and dedication to ensuring that we had a phenomenal stay. We cannot wait to stay again at this enchanting cabin!

We spent two nights in the cabin and loved it! It's a very relaxing setting and had a warm cozy feel inside. Our favorite thing about the house was the outdoor bathtub which was great for looking at the stars and the full moon. The finishes in the cabin are all new too so it was nice and clean. I also appreciated that the decorating was tasteful and not country like many cabins can be. Monica was extremely nice and attentive as well and easy to book with. I definitely recommend staying here and hope to stay here again sometime.

I stayed at this beautiful cabin with my daughter and her friend. The Cabin is well equipped for all cooking and sleeping needs. It is quiet, beautiful and serene. I would've given it a five star rating but the beds were very uncomfortable. The mattress in the upstairs bedroom is foam and flattens quickly. The futon in the living room is Very hard. After all of the hiking in Big Sur, I was so exhausted, it didn't matter much. The owners were wonderful and very helpful. I was very leery about the no contract issue, but they pleasantly surprised me and restored my faith in the goodness of people. I would definitely stay here again, but will bring my air mattress :).

What a lovely place! The cabin itself isn't only charming, it's filled with great vibes and a warm feeling. It is comfortable and has all the amenities you need for a relaxing weekend. We LOVED the outdoor tub! Located only about 20-30 minutes from Big Sur proper, it is a super place to stay when visiting the Big Sur area which we were. The cabin is nestled in the trees, about 2.5 miles up from Highway 1. It is really a magical place and we had a great time! Monica and Joel are so kind. Thank you for a lovely vacation!

I came for an escape from the busyness of everyday life and I found it! Peaceful, quiet and beautiful. The cottage is clean, well-maintained, and comfortable. You have everything you need. I enjoyed sleeping in the upstairs bedroom; felt like I was sleeping in the trees. The outdoor tub was an added bonus. I spent a whole day not leaving the house, sitting out on the deck, reading, enjoying the sights and smells and privacy and quiet, watching the sun rise over the trees and then while sitting in the outdoor tub watching the sun set. What a luxury! The property is well off the beaten path, but worth the effort of finding it. Pfeiffer State Park is close enough to get there within a half hour or so as well as many other wonderful hiking and sightseeing spots. Would I stay here again? Yes!

Our experience with this property is very positive. First, we wanted to thank Monica and Joel for being such a good host. They have provided us with unparalleled customer service. Second, we love the location of the property. We arrived at the property late at night so we were quite unsure of what the surrounding area looked like. We woke up to a beautiful sunshine overlooking a lush forest. The property is nestled in the mountains surrounded by nature and wild life, a perfect place to unplug from the busy city life. During our stay, we saw a fawn and several exciting birds like turkey vultures and hawks. Additionally, we truly enjoyed our privacy. Third, and most important, we loved the property. At first glance, the property looked so simple but it is far from simple. Once you get in the house, you notice the intricate detail that Monica and Joel put into the property. The woodwork and interior design are quite exquisite and well thought out. I particularly like the small doors he had placed throughout the cabin. It is like finding new treasures every time you open a door around the house. But wait there is more! During our stay, we took advantage of outdoor hot tub (especially at night) and the outdoor sauna. We also enjoyed hanging out by the fireplace (particularly hearing the crackling of the wood) as we looked through the large bay windows throughout the house. This property offers much more but I will leave that for you to experience. I cannot express how much we loved this place. We wanted to keep this gem a secret but we want you to experience this place and enjoy it as much as we did. Who knows, you, too, might experience a magical moment as we did.

About the owner: We have lived in the area for over 28 years, and on this property for 19 where we have raised a large family. All of our children still live in the area, and our 16 year old daughter, Sienna, is still with us. I am a carpenter/builder and have rarely had to leave this canyon for work while my wife, Monica, has worked for many years at a fine restaurant in Carmel though now she stays plenty busy running this business. We have been avid backpackers through the years, taking the entire family on many hikes. We are a storehouse of info regarding the best local restaurants, hiking trails, beaches, river spots, etc. so please feel free to ask.
