The Jocko Canyon Wilderness Retreat is situated at the very edge of the North Fork of the Jocko River with wilderness surrounding it on all sides-- it is the most remote private inholding in the canyon. Enjoy the relaxing sound of the river, hike a mile up the road to the Jocko falls, or relax on the wrap-around porch and watch for deer or elk. If you are tired of your dependence on technology- this is the place for you: located off the grid, the retreat is powered by alternative energy and sleeps 6 (one queen & one full bed in main cabin and one full in small guest cabin). Enjoy a fully stocked kitchen and large open floor plan. Let the healing powers of the wilderness make your vacation a rewarding one at the Jocko Canyon Wilderness Retreat.
During the summer months you have access to unlimited hiking and mountain biking trails, two mountain lakes to swim in just a five mile drive away, a magnificent waterfall just one mile up the road, and lots of wildflower, bird and wildlife watching. The winter months provide unparalleled access to backcountry ski trails, cross-country ski trails, and snowmobiling. The town of Arlee is just 16 miles down the Jocko Road, but you feel as though you are completely immersed in the remote wilderness.
If you are interested in exploring the wilderness around the cabin, Tribal Recreation Permits are required. They are very reasonably priced and can be purchased online. We will provide you with all the information.

I stayed in the cabin with friends and danced to the moon light by the fire till the stars sent us to bed and it was the most relaxing nights sleep that only the seclusion of the mountains can give you. Do know that I would stay here any time of the year. I highly recommend this retreat to anyone who wants a night under the stars and the quiet of the mountain air. The cabin is equipped with all the amenities that you need without sacrificing anything. Take a good book and sit in the sun and quiet for a 24 hour retreat or better yet, a week long retreat.....you will come away renewed in spirit and life....Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

We stayed at this darling cabin during Parents Weekend at University Of Missoula. The area is beautiful and quiet. We rarely drove in to Missoula because we hated to leave the serenity of the cabin. It is definitely "off the grid" and usually I prefer a nice hotel room. However, I loved it and found the stove easy to operate and everything in working order. We brought our two dogs and they ran around everywhere. You will not see another person for miles. I have already recommend this cabin to family and friends. I think it has only been rented a few times, it feels more like you're staying at a friends cabin.Recommended for: Girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Wow, I wasn't prepared for the absolute beauty of the of the area surrounding this wilderness retreat! We stayed there last summer with two of our children and their families. It was clean, cozy and welcoming when we arrived. We brought DVDs, but never watched them. We were too busy watching the sun disappear behind the mountains, sitting by the fire at night, making s'mores and watching for wildlife. While we were there, we never got into a car We hiked, fished and read books. We hiked to Jocko falls which was an awesome sight. Some of our group even jumped into the water from the top of the falls, not me! I loved being there and have recommended this mountain retreat to friends.Recommended for: Girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Anne and Gary, We are so happy to hear that you loved your stay in our cabin. We have held onto the cabin because it is in such a special and unique place. The beauty and solitude of the wilderness do have a powerful impact on you. Thank you for sharing your experience with us! We hope you can come and stay at the Jocko Wilderness Retreat again! Warm regards, Claire and Mark Cheff

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1995
About the owner: I am a Montana native and have grown up loving the Montana wilderness. My family owns and runs the Cheff Ranch in the Mission Valley and I grew up exploring the wilderness on our family-led horse pack trips into the wilderness of the Missions Mountains and the Swan Range. I am a wilderness outfitter and contractor/carpenter by trade. I have a wonderful wife and two beautiful children.
Why the Owner Chose Missoula:
I purchased this home in 1995 because of its uniqueness. It is the most remote private inholding in the Mission Mountain Wilderness, just one mile from the North Fork Jocko River Waterfall and Grey Wolf Peak Trailhead. There is incredible backcountry skiing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and hiking, mountain biking, swimming (in St. Mary and Twin Lakes) and fishing in the area. I have enjoyed countless outdoor adventures from my doorstep. It is truly a restful, peaceful experience to stay in the cabin. We invite you to immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the wilderness in our beloved family retreat.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
We have completely remodeled the cabin and tiled the bathroom with handmade Mexican tile and refurbished an old family clawfoot tub that is wonderful to soak in after a long hike or ski. The kitchen is fully equipped with cooking utensils and pots and pans and the fire is always ready for lighting on a cold night. There is a small guest cabin that is great for a couple that has its own small wrap around porch. The property is located just above the North Fork of the Jocko River and there is a trail that goes from the house down to the river. What is most powerful about our Jocko Canyon Wilderness Retreat is the effect that the mountain wilderness has on you. The layers of stress, of daily routine, seem to peel away and the call of the wild immerses you in its magic. But unlike most remote wilderness cabins-- ours is very comfortable and elegant. Although the cabin is off the grid, the propane stove, water heater, fridge and gravity fed water system bring you all the comforts of a modern home. We still use propane lights which are also very easy to use. We invite you to experience our wonderful wilderness outpost!
