My wife and I spent a wonderful week at this cottage for our honeymoon and we wouldn't have traded anything for it. The location is a nice balance of proximity to Mount Desert Island and the peaceful solitude of Surry. It was easy to take day trips out to MDI for hiking or kayaking and make it back to the cabin in time for dinner. The lobster shack up the road is a little pricey but it was really tasty. Be sure to sample the local ice cream as well! Waking up every morning to the amazing bay views with the forest beyond was an absolute joy. The cabin itself is tastefully decorated, eclectic and highly personal. There was a ton of firewood and we built a fire every night, which warmed the house and was cozy and romantic. Overall, the listing description was accurate, the photos do the space justice, the property was very clean and well maintained. The owners were helpful and provided answers to our questions. I would certainly recommend it to friends or relatives. The best activities nearby are Mount Desert Island (hiking and kayaking), Blue Hill and the shops and quaint downtown area, and Perry's lobster shack.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, romantic getaway.

This is a lovely, homey cottage; not a funky summer place, but a cottage that used to be the owner's home for 13 years. It's privately situated away from the crowds and popular beaches. If you want to be in the middle of things things is not the place for you. But if you want peace and quiet, just 20 minutes to either Blue Hill or Ellsworth, with gentle biking or walking the stoney beach, kayaking and landscape painting all right outside your door,, we highly recommend this place. We find it especially appealing as a couple, altho for a couple and an other adult or two, or a few kids it could also be perfect. The new queen bed is yummy; the kitchen well-appointed; the living room area has several comfortable couches and chairs, the deck's terrific, and the owner has always been helpful and fair.... We've come here 3 times and will continue to try to make this our yearly getaway spot. Thanks, Dee!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My partner and I spent a very peaceful August week in this cozy Surry cottage, watching the sun rise each morning from our deck overlooking Union River Bay. The cottage is located down a long peninsula, far from traffic, noise and any disturbance, and surrounded by trees and shrubs to make it very private. The cottage itself is comfortable, cozy and large enough for the two of us to share. We ate out most of the time, but the kitchen had everything we wanted on the few occasions when we ate in. The cottage is decorated with a bit of whimsy and fun, full of light during the day and inviting at night. The view across the bay towards Acadia is spectacular! Just down a set of stairs is the bay—rocky but swimmable (bring swim shoes), and a great way to cool off in the afternoon. A few miles down the peninsula is a sand beach and a great place for lobster (to take home or to eat at the waterside, watching the lobster boats unload). At first, we were concerned about the proximity of another rental, “the studio,” on the same property. But we soon realized that the renters were far enough away from us and their cottage oriented in a different direction. We enjoyed exchanging occasional pleasantries with our neighbors and our dogs got to socialize, but we never felt them to be too close. Dee and John could not have been more gracious as hosts and they know the area really well, especially the arts community. We look forward to renting the same cottage again in the future.Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

This was a fantastic property in a beautiful location- very peaceful, very lovely house right on water. the property owners were fantastic to deal with- couldnt do enough to make the our vacation perfect. You have all the comforts of home (or better). Great biking, walking, sunset watching, beach, grilling, reading, relaxing. Close to Acadia but far enough away to avoid traffic and tourism. We are definitively returning next year!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway.

This is the sort of place you might stay once in a lifetime. The cottage is within a clearing on a wooded "neck" (think peninsula). It is very private, serene, and beautiful. There are stairs leading down to the beach in the yard. The cottage itself is clean, bright, cheerful, and well-appointed (it has a personality built on hand-painted, cozy furniture, a full stock of kitchen items, books, a wood-burning stove, etc.). You can hear the ocean, and there was a soft breeze for the entire week we were there. You smell trees, fresh air, the salty ocean, and the wildflowers (of which there are hundreds) on the property all the time. The side of the cottage facing the yard and ocean is comprised mostly of windows, and the view is absolutely spectacular. We stayed in late summer, and the temperature couldn't have been better- warm days and cool nights- perfect for sleeping. Acadia National Park is a short drive, and there is a wonderful lobster shack where you can bring your own wine about 2 miles up the road. This is a truly wonderful place to be, due in no small part to the caring, warmth, and graciousness of the property's owners, who will make your stay incredibly comfortable while allowing you total privacy. I highly recommend this property.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My husband and I were fortunate enough to stay here for our honeymoon. I can't imagine what could have been more perfect that our stay here, and we'll be back at every possible opportunity. After a week here, I think that we were both more serious that I'd like to admit about giving up our city jobs to move to Maine (and do God knows what for a living). The cottage was perfect, clean, beautiful, and stocked with everything that you could think to need. The property felt like something out a fairytale... flowers everywhere, charming cottage, nestled in the woods, ocean sound in the background. Great collection of books to pull from in the cottage, we spent hours reading on the porch overlooking the incredible view of the water. The lobster shack right down the street was so delicious that we ate there nearly every day. It's BYOB, so it was wonderful to buy a great bottle of wine from the Blue Hill wine shop and drink it on the dock as the sun went down. They also have this amazing blueberry soda that you can pour over their natural vanilla ice cream for a float that will make any future sweets feel anticlimatic. Another time we bought mussels from them and cooked them ourselves in the cottage kitchen. Right down the road form the lobster shack is a great little beach for wading. Anything more you need, you can just grab from nearby Blue Hill or Ellsworth (beautiful drives to either). Easy enough access to Acadia for a day hike. In all, it feels so private and isolated while you're in the cottage on the water, yet convenient and supplied with all that you could conceivably need. I can't recommend this place highly enough. My only hesitation in writing a review of this experience is that it will become too popular for us to spend at least a week here every summer for the rest of our life.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My husband and I and our three young children enjoyed an amazing week at this beautiful cottage. Dee and John were wonderful to deal with and were kind enough to let us check in a little early. Upon our arrival we were met with a VERY clean cottage with fresh cut flowers and a book of all the area attractions and restaurants. As we explored the cottage, we discovered that everything we could need was there for our use. Dee is an amazing artist and the cottage was beautifully deocorated and hand painted. The attention to detail in all of the ameneties was great! We loved exploring the beach at the cottage and found a small beach about two miles down the road. The kids loved swimming there, but boy was it chilly. We took several trips to town and to Acadia and found the area to be delightful. Morton's ice cream shop was sooo good. We loved this vacation and highly recommend Dee and John's cottage to anyone that wants a relaxing place to stay. We never missed the tv and the kids are still talking about our trip a month and a half later. Thanks for letting us stay at your cottage and hopefully we can come back for a visit!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

I have good news! If you are looking for an amazing place to stay, you need look no more. I can't imagine a more perfect spot to fall in love with Maine. My husband and I recently celebrated our 10th anniversary in this magical cottage, and couldn't have been more pleased with our choice. The view is breathtaking, the location ideal, and the cottage is absolutely charming. Pictures don't do it justice. This is not your typical generic Turnkey style rental. It has warmth, character, and is furnished with everything you need. Further, the owners were wonderful hosts. They gave us space during our romantic getaway, but were always available for questions or to provide suggestions. This is also a great choice for pet lovers. We brought our dog and he had a wonderful time too. The only downside was that the cottage was so amazing we had a difficult time leaving. We can't wait to return.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

"Summer was almost gone when we suddenly decided that we would need a vacation. Since in Northern Virginia area where we live was quite hot, we thought that Maine would be a good choice. We haven't been before up there and therefore only when I started to look for a rental I realized it could be difficult to find something that we would like. I almost abandoned the search when my husband surprisingly (he usually doesn't get himself involved in vacation's planning) send me the link and the Mapquest satellite view of a cottage that happened to be opened only for a week. By a lucky coincidence that week was one of our two possibilities. We are quite picky and we had some requirements: waterfront, open view, inflatable launching possibility, fishing, biking and running possibility, a small to medium sized cottage (it was about us two). I couldn't believe it! The cottage answered "yes" to our requirements. We booked it and here we were on our way to find out that more was expecting for us.... the location has magnificent views, the mysterious combination of water and mountain, the cottage is the coziest and homiest we have seen, everything in the house is carefully selected and designed throwing you gracefully back in time, and there is nothing (and we literally mean NOTHING) that you would need and it won't be there; from all sorts of kitchen stuff to binoculars and fishing gear; even a rowing boat! And then, in one of the evenings we invited Dee over for a glass of wine. The top of the surprises came when we met the nicest and friendliest landlord. We left the place with our souls full of optimism and nostalgia promising ourselves that we will be back and we will bring our grown up sons and their girlfriends too.... the cottage can easily fit 6 persons. It was for us a wonderful vacation spent in a piece of heaven...." Have a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year! Best regards, Irina and NicolasDid you find this review helpful? we are a family of four from the Netherlands; we felt so lucky to have chosen this cottage to spend a week leasuring as part of our great US north-eastcoast trip. the only problem we had, is that we did not wanted to leave...it was truly a paradise. we totally agree with the other reviewers that the pictures don't do this place justice!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Pictures don't do this place justice. We just spent a week here and were reluctant to leave. The location is beautiful, private, and quiet. The house is roomy, clean -- and this is not a word I use often -- charming. The attention to detail in this place is fascinating. The hosts are generous, attentive, and at the same time, they leave you alone. They're kind people who love the place and it matters to them that your stay there is enjoyable. The house is comfortable, clean, and safe. I loved it. The view speaks for itself, especially in the early morning and late afternoon. If meditation is your thing, this is a great place for a quiet retreat. It's a great place just to unwind and let go. It was wonderful.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My husband and I, and our Aussie Molly, had a wonderful vacation at this charming cottage. The owners of the cottage were gracious and available if needed. We visited Acadia which is only 45 minutes away and it was absolutely breathtaking. You cannot go to Surry without visiting Bar Harbor. It is an amazing town with the friendliest people. There is a store in Trenton called "Maine's Own Treats" which has a delicious variety of jams and jellies, but most amazing is their "Yummy Toast" line of blueberry and apple pie jams! All in all it was a wonderful vacation, after all, the President decided on this location also! Also, the Surry local store has delicious sandwiches, not to mention lobsters right on Morgan Bay Road. "Heaven"! The only negative we had is that the shrubbery has grown up to somewhat block the amazing view of the ocean, a simple fix. We would recommend this cottage to anyone.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Our little family (my husband, our ten month old, our well behaved dog and I) spent a perfect week at the cottage. The pictures don't do this place justice -- it is so charming, and comfortable, big enough for us all without being too big. We had been a bit nervous because there were no pictures of the kitchen, so as cooks we were delighted to find it very well stocked with abundant counter space and the same cottage charm that gives this wonderful place so much personality. The whole house was so homey and well set up, and Dee so accomodating right from our welcome, that it felt more like we were staying in a distant relative's place than in a rental property. The location is perfect -- right on the water with the mountains of Acadia feeling like sneezing distance, and far enough from everything that it is completely quiet -- no neighbors or road noise, even (although there is another rental studio on the property). But not completely isolated: Blue Hill is very accessible, the farmstands are a short drive (or medium bike ride) away, and the lobster shack a couple miles down the road is pure Maine as you dream of it. This is our fourth time coming up to this region of Maine, and we had many activities planned, but it was so much easier to spend lazy day after lazy day hanging out on the deck, in the yard, eating lobster, admiring the garden. With no TV, radio, internet, and little cell phone coverage (but enough to not have to worry about being incommunicado in case of true emergencies), we were able to completely unplug. I didn't want to go home. I hope we get to come back!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway.

My husband and I have been renting in the Surry area for 10 years and this is by far the best place we have rented. The location is unbelievable and the pictures above do not do it justice. We are avid runners and found running with our dogs on Newbury Neck Rd great...very little traffic and spectacular views. It is worth renting or bringing kayaks to explore the endless shoreline and the outlying islands. The cottage itself is extremely comfortable with unique and cozy furnishings. We spent alot of time reading on the deck that looks out onto Union River Bay and across to Acadia. The yard is nicely kept with grass and beautiful perennial gardens. It is centrally located to surrounding destinations but also feels secluded at the same time. We spent most of our time right at the cottage...hanging out on the deck, kayaking and running. The owners could not have been nicer. Would highly recommend to anyone interested in enjoying the Maine coast. The cottage far exceeded our expectations!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My husband and I wanted to get away from it all with our two-year-old son and this was the perfect spot. It's a lovely, one-of-a-kind cottage with a beautiful yard on its own private rocky beach that seems totally isolated from the world. And yet, in twenty minutes or so we were in beautiful Blue Hill and in forty minutes, in stunning Acadia National Park or the charming village of Stonington. The house is fully equipped with everything from sheets and towels to cleaning products and kitchen supplies. We really only needed to bring groceries (which we got at the fab coop in Blue Hill and the even more fab farm stand just up the road. There is a big grocery store in town as well). The owners keep the place spotless and they were readily available to answer any questions we had, from restaurant recommendations to minor issues about the house (where to stash the trash, etc.). I would highly recommend this property to anyone seeking a beautiful, peaceful getaway.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with young children, romantic getaway.
