The cabin sits on a wonderful property above the Smith River. It is a get-away place, cool and wet in winter and must be amazing in summer. The cabin/house is old, shows its age, smells a bit wet if the fireplace stove is not fired up. The hot tub in the light rain gave a reason to be out at night. The sauna did not heat up well, door did not close tightly at all...it looked great under the giant redwood but disappointed. Just know this is a funky place, sleep in the living room and enjoy the location. We did.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

When I found the cabin at VRBO it looked rustic, cozy, and in a beautiful location. When we arrived, we discovered it was all that and more. The outside fit right into the old redwoods there, the inside was decorated very fun--antiques, twinkle lights, Christmas decor, and salmon/cabin themed. It is not sterile like a hotel, but is someone's home that they are sharing with us. We enjoyed the waterfall view, explored the trails around the cabin, and hiked down to the river. Hidden in the trees, my local extended family didn't know it was there! It's just a couple miles from Stout Grove and an easy drive into Crescent City. The sauna and hot tub were very relaxing in the evening and even the middle of the day! Plenty of yard furniture to sit in outside and enjoy nature. I just wish we had been able to roast marshmellows over the fire pit but we ran out of time. We'll have to do it next time. Bathroom was up to date. We found cell coverage at several places in the yard. The four of us (two 20 somethings, hubby, and I) enjoyed it and would love to come back.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My Wife and I (newly Weds) Spent our honeymoon at this cabin. The owners were amazing in how they worked with us even when our flight got cancelled and we had to drive to Crescent City. They made it possible for us to still get in the cabin late at night, They left us a note and treats in the fridge for my wife and I. We enjoyed every minuet of our stay at this beautiful location. The Redwood Tree in the back yard is about 800 years old, and probably 12 ft in diameter. The Cabin has a very beautiful layout and is thoughtfully decorated. The Sound system has an IPOD hookup which we enjoyed very much to listen to our music in the evenings, we enjoyed camp fires, nights in the Hot Tub, and sitting on the front/back porches for devotions. The pictures of this property don't do the place justice, I was surprised and amazed at how much more beautiful it was than i thought it would be. There is plenty to do in Crescent City and the surrounding areas and usually not enough time to do them. We hope to book another stay here next year for our 1 year anniversary. I'd recommend this cabin to anyone from the Avid Hiker to the city person that wants to enjoy nature without going camping. There's something here for everyone.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

The cabin was as described. This area is amazing, the Stout Grove is very nearby and a must see. We caught 70+ trout and released all but one. Loved the hot tub and sauna. We also took a short drive into Oregon and enjoyed some beach time. The cabin was well stocked with common kitchen essentials. I feel obligated to share this part since I rely so much on customer reviews. The cabin is very close to a bridge and a popular swimming hole, so you will hear sounds from that. Mostly, it's quiet. There's a musty smell in the cabin that was hard to clear out because only one window had a screen. This is a naturally humid area so mosquito are to be expected, but, we didn't want them inside so we could only open the one window. The windows in the bedroom don't open. The master bed seemed small (full?) but was extremely comfortable. We chose to sleep in the front room on a trundle bed that opened up to make a larger bed, it was also very comfortable. Aside from the mustiness, the cabin is charming and the Smith River is absolutely gorgeous! The owners, though not always easy to contact (no cell signal at the cabin and we couldn't get in to use the phone) honored our contract and reimbursed the deposit right away. Don't be surprised if you play phone tag a little. The advanced courtesy call to them is essential if you don't want to wait. When the owner arrived, she gave a full tour and explained in detail how things worked which was very helpful.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Lovely cozy cabin very close to Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park. Very convenient to a number of famous trails including Stout Grove, Boy Scout Tree, Simpson-Reed, Hiouchi etc. Close enough to Crescent City, but far enough away to avoid feel of the city. We drove to Prairie Creek Visitor Center and Orick on some days to hike Trillium Falls, Fern Canyon, Rhododendron, Foothills, Big Tree and Prairie Creek trails - and the Orick Horse Trail with Redwood Trails Horse Riding people - it was great. Great owners - pleasure to deal with, cabin is well-stocked, has everything you might need, free wifi signal was a plus! So wonderful to have morning coffee/ tea sitting next to 2000 year old Redwood trees on the property, and relax at night in the hot tub under some more Redwoods (especially on the day we rode the Orick Horse Trail!). Very clean and well-maintained cabin. Loved having washer/ dryer so we didn't have to pack dirty clothes while coming back home. My mom can't walk a lot, so she didn't hike with us, but she enjoyed spending her day at the cabin, exploring the property, and reading and relaxing at the cabin. South Fork of Smith River flows right next to (but well below) the cabin, great place for kids to hang out and swim. Waterfall across the cabin was a trickle in the summer, but must be quite vigorous in the winter. I would (and already have) recommend this to anyone considering a quiet get-away. Make sure you allow enough days (at least a week) to do everything that's there to do, and have time to relax in the cabin. Owners recommended (and I heartily agree) Sea West Thai restaurant in Fort Dick. It was AMAZING Thai food!! Hole-in-the-wall restaurant, but great food - must give it a try (we went there twice!).Recommended for: Adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

The location is lovely and we did enjoy our time spent OUTSIDE of the house. The huge redwood tree, sauna, hot tub, and beautiful river view were great. Good hiking, beach combing and adventuring in this region abound. We love Northern Cali and visit often, but we won't be coming back to this place. This cabin is overdecorated to the point of dysfunction. For example, it was awkward finding enough surface area to prepare food in the kitchen or space on the foyer bench to sit and put on shoes because nearly every surface in the cabin is already home to multiple cute knick-knacks or candle-things. There were shelves for food in the kitchen already filled with expired products so our food had to be stored in grocery bags on the floor. Further, there are so many imitation garlands and unusable antique objects adorning the cabin that it must be impossible to thoroughly clean or dust. We sneezed a lot, and our son developed a runny nose. A favorite quote during our stay was that the cabin came "pre-cluttered", i.e. with someone else's memories on the walls, someone else's shoes already under the couch, their old valentine cards in the bedroom, and even a random handbag and bundle of Hawaiian leis draped from the chair next to our bed. Further aggravating the clutter, the cabin is old and suffering from generations of improvised architecture. The master suite contains the only bathroom and linen closet in the entire place. The other bedroom adjoins the kitchen and has no door (a cotton curtain hangs in the doorway) which makes privacy of any sort essentially impossible. Insult to injury, we arrived to find linens from the last tenants still in the laundry - left there by the owners or their housekeeper for us. Drying and folding someone else's laundry on vacation while paying a cleaning fee to cover such things is really just unacceptable. The microwave was broken. And their 'old cabin in the woods' theme-gone-wild really stopped being cute when the antique oven ignited in a fiery burst that burnt off my wife's bangs on our wedding anniversary. We are surprised by the number of positive reviews. It was part of what sold us on the space. We wanted to add another perspective for those who might want to search elsewhere for a cleaner, less cluttered space.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 7/9

WOW - What a wonderfully relaxing time we had at the Smith River Cabin! We loved every minute we were there. There is nothing like waking up in the morning to nothing but the falls and the river below. We were back to the cabin each night by 5 to just enjoy the serenity of the moment. We were there for 4 nights and felt our time was too short. The cabin has so many personal touches that is it is so warm and welcoming the moment you step foot in the door. If you are looking for a wonderful place to get away from the hustle and bustle, this cabin is it!!!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Our experience here was completely fantastic. The owners have thought of everything including an additional propane tank to the patio heater/BBQ grille. It was ready for us in the wood shed when one ran out. All I had to do was swap it out. They had wood ready for us to use both inside and outside in the fire ring. The hot tub was very relaxing. The location was wonderful - just a 5 minute drive from Stout Grove one of the oldest "old growth" forests, easy access up the Oregon coast, and only a 15 minute drive to town for Starbucks and restaurants. Don't miss a hike down to the local beach under the bridge on a sunny day and also the trail across the river - where you get an awesome view of the cabin itself including 1 super impressive Redwood tree right in the yard. The cabin was rustic, charming, and exactly what we'd expect in the woods. It provided everything we could have asked for amid such beautiful scenery. We definitely hope to return.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

The location of this property on the Smith River is ideal! Every hike we wanted to do was within a 10 minute drive. The scenery is indescribable! The swimming hole below the adjacent bridge is perfection, incuding a rope swing and a short rapids for tubing. The river was flowing gently while we were there and you could swim from the swimming hole upstream to the waterfall that you can see from the fabulous backyard of the cabin. It is where we spent all of our time while not on the river. It's amazing!!!! My kids (3 boys ages 8-11) found snails and slugs and enjoyed pretending to be explorers climbing on the rocks under the towering redwoods. The hot tub was yummy as the river does chill your bones a bit! The house was perfect for us and we hope to come stay again! Clean and cozy! Great views! Thanks for sharing a great spot to unwind!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Arriving and staying at the Smith River Cabin was a treat that kept getting sweeter and sweeter as time went on - until it became bittersweet the day we had to leave. The photos and explanations here are good but this is a place you have to experience. It’s a well-loved cabin and you can feel the sense of family and togetherness that Becky and Dennis have built therein. As we packed up, I have to admit that I left some of my clothes unwashed. How I was looking forward to retaining a few items that had been pressed with the mountain-fresh, Smith River air, a smell that only a place like this one can offer and I will cling to it as I recall the fond memories of our 10-year wedding anniversary. We couldn’t have found a better place on this earth. P.S. I feel that many of the other reviewers for this cabin could be a bit more honest about what a wonderful location this is, but perhaps they are afraid that EVERYONE will want to stay here! I sure am!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We had a great time at this cabin. Myself, my husband and his parents spent 5 nights and had a great time. There was plenty of room to spread out and have 'me' time. The view of the river, waterfall, and trees are spectacular. The cabin is well stocked with supplies, such as, plenty of towels, blankets, cookware, plates/utensils. There are even dry goods and spices to pick through (but beware of some of the expiration dates) We spent one day driving into Crescent City and down to Klamath. Because of the time of year ( late spring) there isn't much going on. We found a couple of antique type stores. Next day we went north to Brookings, OR. Neat town where we found a couple more shops, nothing grand. I absolutely recommend the clam chowder at The Hungry Clam, located in the harbor. Walked the trail at Stout Grove. Very easy path to walk and majestic trees. Dennis, owner, was very responsive to emails and phone calls, which I really appreciated. Becky was there to great us and give us a tour of the place. I would come back in a heartbeat and recommend it to anyone. If you have very young children I would be wary about playing unsupervised outside; the property is literally on the bank of a steep cliff to the river below.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Couldn't have asked for a better cabin to use as a base for our exploring the redwoods. The drive to and from the cabin never got old. The cabin itself is all that you'd want or need. We loved exploring the redwoods but were always eager to get back to the cabin to relax. Hot tub in the morning with coffee or the afternoon / evening with drinks was so relaxing. Loved all the seating available outside. We slept in the main room which I'd recommend doing b/c the fire is so great and the sounds of the waterfall are soothing. We had nearly a full moon one night and the whole river / valley was light as day! Enjoyed the relaxing mornings watching the sun creep across the moutain side. Stout Grove is not a hardcore hike and more of a leisurely stroll but is a must do and loved that it is so close. We went there in the morning to jog and it was perfect for that...had it all to ourselves but we still couldn't find any ewoks! Further down that road Mill Creek Trail is nice as well. I'd recommend driving that road for that is a great experience as well...go as far as you can. A little further away we did Damnation Trail and was probably our fav hike. Maybe about 30 minute drive from the cabin. I'd recommend this to everyone. It's a nice cabin with everything you could need and in a great location. We hope to return sometime!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

I DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE. My husband and I went there with the intent of relaxing, fishing, and spending quality time with one another and that was exactly what we did. I was so relaxed and slept so soundly every night with the awesome wood-burning stove casting a warm glow. The hot tub was HEAVENLY. Soaking in it while overlooking the waterfall, surrounded by redwoods - it does not get any better than that. The hiking nearby was also amazing. Stout Grove is breathtaking. We enjoyed a great combo of time spent outdoors and chilling in the cabin. We bought some cookie dough and baked cookies in the vintage stove each day. We brought all of our own food to cook in the cabin because we wanted to spend as much time there as possible. It was that cozy and enjoyable. I truly hope to come back here again. You cannot beat it for the price. Thank you so much, Dennis and Becky, for your amazing hospitality. Wonderfully quaint cabin in a magical spot. We had a great time relaxing in the hot tub. Your cabin has a terrific collection of interesting things to look at and is in such a beautiful private spot. It's nice to rent a place that isn't stripped bare. Especially nice that condiments are in the kitchen. It's so hard to pack every little thing you will need to cook for 3 days. The pictures of this vacation rental do not do it justice, the property was absolutely incredible. Best river beach/swimming we've had, absolutely pristine. My inlaws came to visit us and took my husband, son, and sister in law on vacation for 4 nights. Its totally relaxing to spend the day at the cabin, but there's also so much to do so close by. My only regret is that we didn't get to stay longer. I would have loved to spend more time in the Redwood forests. As for the cabin itself, it was lovely and spacious, had many different places for relaxing as well as eating. Wonderful deck out back. Kitchen had practically everything you need for cooking. It was moderately clean - the sinks and the shower and stuff were all very clean and sanitary looking, my only gripe is that the shelves and knick-knacks had a lot of cobwebs (typical of a cabin though), and there was carpeting in the bathroom. There is one tiny bedroom with a twin bed, and another bedroom with a double bed. There is also a king size pull out bed that was very comfy in the living room, along with a double fold out sofa bed. Thanks so much for sharing your house with us, I would love to return one day!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

While we only had 2 nights at this little & heavenly bungalow, it was truly magnificent. My family came together from Hawaii, Florida & New Mexico for a weeklong vacation in Portland, Ashland & then Crescent City. We hiked/walked Stout Grove which is easy & fun for a beginning day. Then the 2nd day we drove far south and worked our way up from Lady Bird Johnson, which is a wonderful self-guided tour and then we drove to Fern Canyon, which is well worth the $8 entrance fee to walk along the stream with 4 story high ferns everywhere! Driving along the coast in the afternoon is much clearer to see the beauty & whales!! In Crescent City we ate at Los Compadres Mexican Restaurant, which is a small drive-up/sit-in place with wonderfully authentic food and rather fast service. The food is absolutely tasty & the portions are huge! La Fiesta is good. This cabin will forever be remembered in my family & we hope to return for a week or more. We had every ammenity we could need and loved our days here!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

What a great place to stay for all the wonderful hiking trips in this area. (And what a location and view!) We hiked the Myrtle Creek Trail (across 199) and recommend it-lush with plants and a nice spot on the creek at trail's end. A drive up Little Jones Creek Rd. was rewarded with a hike to Doe Flat and Buck Lake. With such a late spring the wildflowers were abundant. Also full of wildflowers, and a bear, was Summit Valley, about 2 miles off the G-O Road. Then, of course, Stout Grove at your front door. Sadly, we couldn't hike all the others! We came with family after a rewarding camping trip two years ago made us fall in love with the coastal redwoods. Last time we camped, and were lucky with 100 degree tempuratures, but this trip we had a little more funding and decided on a cabin. This one was a beautiful find-surprising us with its features and location. Our first day flew by with a gorgeous hike down the Simpson Reed trail a few miles away. (That had been a plan since our last visit). Then we explored the cabin a bit, finding the sauna relaxing and the fire pit useful for smores. Day two was a day @ the beach-literally. We rented wet suits and a surf board to try some waves. Talent was not plentiful enough for true surfing success, but we could body-surf like pro's. After that we spent some time on the Smith River. Our last day was a rush to hike a new place and find souvenirs, it never really felt over. The day stretched out, and we fell back to the cabin thankfully. Packing was a blur, we booked hotels & mapped out our trip before realizing it was really the end. Thank you so much for your cabin and kindness! It was unforgettable!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

From roaming around in the Redwoods (where "Return of the Jedi" was filmed) a couple miles up the road, to our sunny day at the beach in Crescent City to the hike up the old mining trail, bonfire, BBQ, hot tub, and sauna - we could not have asked for more. May 12th, Our 2nd day we did see a bear on the property from the front porch. I was not sure at first because he was far back from the house & staring at us. By the time I got the camera he turned & left quietly & we never saw him again. Stout Grove is incredible - it is a must see. Ocean World was a fun tour. The restaurants in Crescent City; Grotto, Fishermen & Chart House have great seafood. Out back of Chart House you will see seals laying on the docks. If you get a chance drive the Oregon Coast. We drove to Coos Bay & spent a night in Bandon - breathtaking! We took a trail off the Hwy 101 in Oregon & saw seals with their pups in natural habitat - simply a beautiful site to see. Trees of Mystery has great fudge & the Native American museum is one of the best I have ever seen! Disappointed that jet tour is not open until May 20th. We are leaving a day early to get a room in Medford closer to airport. Thanks for the cookies! Loved the hot tub. ---Ron & Pat (Honey Brook, PA)Did you find this review helpful? May 5th, Had a great & relaxing time. Loved how rustic & charming the cabin was. Our 2 1/2 year old loved her room - especially the wolf picture. Boyscout Trail was beautiful! Can't get over the color of the river - I've never seen anything like it. This is truely one of the most beautiful areas I've ever seen and can't wait to come back. Thanks! May 1st, 2011. Leaving tomorrow :( Came all the way from Michigan to stay at this awesome cabin. What an amazing place...We saw a river otter from the bridge one evening - so cute. Stout Grove is really worth the trip (we went 3 times!) - the giant Redwoods are amazing. Today we drove further to Boy Scout Trail (past Stout Grove - kind of bumpy road but worth it!) Hillier than Stout but just as spectacular. Loved the waterfall & hot tub. Very comfortable & welcoming space. We'd like to bring all our friends. The green of the river is magical. Saw wood ducks too. We spent a day driving up Oregon Coast. Between Brookings Harbor & Gold Beach there were tons of great state parks along the ocean, with views or hikes. We especially liked Arch Rock & Natural Bridges. Gold Beach has a great bookstore & coffee shop - worth visiting. Found out Dutch Bros. Coffee is individually owned & has delicious coffee. Thanks so much for a wonderful five days! This is a sacred place. Your friends from Michigan - Libby & Carol (P.S. This was in honor of Carol's 60th birthday - we've been best friends for 32 years!)Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Happy Easter & Happy Spring! Thanks for a great place to stay amongst the Redwoods. We loved everything about this cabin....(what is impossible to reproduce here are the creative and adorable pictures drawn in the guestbook by our guests: an Easter bunny, Easter basket, tulips, daffodil, slug, round "Hobbit" sauna with steam rising above it, oean creatures; urchins, starfish, sand dollars, waves and sand... and the captions for the pictures: a slug saying, "Thanks so much!", "Slugs are cute!", "Slugs taste like chicken! (slimy chicken)", "Saunas are awesome...kiss one!", "tide pools are amazing...and the ocean majestic", "Redwoods are wise",. We had such a fun time. The hiking trails were beautiful. We thought the record player was pretty cool. We loved looking at the river while we were in the hot tub. When the landslide at Requa closed the road and put an end to our plans to stay at the Requa Inn, we had to find an alternative. Discovering your Smith River cabin more than made up for the loss of Requa. Ed and Jennifer had traveled from Seattle to Redding for Spring Break to visit Ed's parents Ruben and Darlene and together tour the Redwoods and Crescent City. Ruben had fished the Smith for many years with Darlene and loved the clear, emerald hued waters with its sculpted, rocky banks. Your cabin, with its perch overlooking the river, was the perfect vacation getaway for us. Becky and Dennis, we appreciated your warmth and hospitality, thank you very much for sharing this special cabin in the Redwoods with us.---Ed & Jennifer, Seattle, WA and Ruben & Darlene, Redding, CADid you find this review helpful? Dennis and Becky, Thank you for your warm welcome, the delicious cookies and a wonderful place to spend a few days. The rain did little to dampen our awesome vacation. The nature around here is gorgeous--full Smith River, the waterfall, the giant redwoods. And what better way to end the day than with a soak in a hot tub. Norman Rockwell book was a pleasant bonus. A beautiful and peaceful place. We very well may be coming back, maybe with some fishing gear. :)---Val and co., OR, CA and UkraineDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

A Birthday Celebration in Paradise. We love this area, of Redwood Giants. Makes you wish they could talk. Also, we really enjoyed your Norman Rockwell Book, so cool. A couple of comfortable chairs for movie watching would be a way nice addition. The views are awesome! Thank you for sharing. ---Jerry & Vivian, Prospect, OR Dear Jerry & Vivian, We had also noticed the sofa cushions were becoming uncomfortable and so thank you for your observation. We took the cusions to our local upholsterer, Sharp Upholstery, right away and had them redone! Our future guests will thank you also!--Dennis & Becky WoodDid you find this review helpful? As the coastal mist drips off of the majestic canopy of the ancient Redwoods or drifts down the bluffs to parallel the river on its journey to the sea, one's mind can drift off to a place untouched by the outside world. All thoughts seem to turn towards a place long ago forgotten where time stands still. A place where the sounds of the timeless river fills the heart, nourishes the soul & provides one with the moment to appreciate what matters most in the journey of life - the ones we love & the memories we've had with them. This is that type of place. Thanks, Matt & Shallan (Ashland, OR)Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My wife and I had a great time on our honeymoon at the cabin. Best weather possible our whole trip-it rained the night we got here and the day we left! Taking the road by Stout Grove and Boy Scout Tree into town instead of 199 was one of our favorites, and the fish and chips were AMAZING! Thank you so much for a wonderful week!--Zac and JanaeDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

Dennis & Becky, Thank you so much for sharing this magical place with us! I cannot imagine a better place to have shared my 50th birthday & Thanksgiving holiday w/my husband. We loved Stout Grove & the Craig's Creek trail! We did not realize it was quite as long a trail as it is, but we made it! Next time, we will plan on taking more time for it. I am just so grateful for our time here, and am already planning when we can come back! -Thank you, Chris P. Many of the best memories of my life are from the time I spent living in a situation very similar to this place about 20 miles upriver. Our trip this holiday was a very relaxing way to celebrate my wife's big birthday as well as allow her to experience this beautiful corner of the world that had so much to do with me becoming the person that I am. It was wonderful being able to sleep while hearing the river, spend rainy times in front of the fire or in the hot tub taking in the beauriful view. Highlights included seeing the spawning salmon upriver near Patrick's Creek, watching the pair of early steelhead laying off the gravel bar below the waterfall across the river, watching the hooded mergansers and wood ducks in the river from the window here, hiking in Stout Grove in the gentle rain, watching whales from the high part of Hwy 101 south of Crescent City, and spending a very relaxing time with my wife who I love very much..... -- David P.
