Chandler House: Classic Vermont

Chandler House is the ideal retreat for families, friends and/or several couples looking to enjoy the best Vermont has to offer. The classic, federalist style house is set up as your own 'Private Inn.' In addition to its living room, kitchen and adjacent dining area, the house features five generously sized bedrooms, four with ensuite baths and the fifth adjacent. Two of the rooms feature wood burning fireplaces. The house makes a cameo film appearance in Hitchcock's 'The Trouble with Harry,' at the same moment as the director himself.
Craftsbury Common represents the classic Vermont experience and is one of the Northeast Kingdom’s most photographed villages. Founded in 1789, the town sits atop a plateau surrounded by forest and farmland. Federal style architecture, white clapboard, and the classic village church and steeple encircle a perfect village green. The house sits adjacent to the town's picture-ready church, library and the History Museum, and is opposite the green from Craftsbury's historic Academy. The village is additionally home to two General Stores and Sterling College, a small four-year institution specializing in environmental education. The Common itself is a hive of activity, farmers markets, summer concerts, soccer camps and town parades. Local artisans abound. Craftsbury is sleepy and sophisticated at the same time.
The area around Craftsbury is noted for its unspoiled beauty, flinty New England inhabitants, wildlife and focus on the outdoors. The Northeast Kingdom is described as “quintessential Vermont' due to its unvarnished authenticity and breathtaking scenery. Warm days and cool nights characterize the area’s summer season. Fall foliage is spectacular throughout the Northeast Kingdom, and is considered the best in the State. During the wintertime and located within a snow belt, Craftsbury's visuals are akin to a Robert Frost poem. The native photographer, John M. Miller, has captured the land and its people in his work, whereas the writer, Howard Frank Mosher, has underscored the unique essence of the area in his famous novels 'The Fall of the Year' and 'Where the River Runs North'
Outdoor activities abound in Craftsbury and the region. Hiking, mountain biking, swimming, golf and downhill skiing are all close-by. Adjacent Greensboro is home to Caspian Lake, which is surrounded by summer cottages and estates. The hiking and biking trails around fjord-like Lake Willoughby are spectacular. The Craftsbury Outdoor Center surrounds several smaller lakes in Craftsbury, including Great and Little Hosmer. The Center specializes in sculling camps during the summer and offers one of the most extensive and best-regarded cross-country trail systems in the State. The annual Craftsbury Marathon attracts upwards of 1500 athletes each January who compete and take in the area’s well known hospitality. According to one participant “The course has a delightful mix of vistas –snow laden balsam firs, silver-gray or red barns, expanses of farm fields, frozen lakes and beaver ponds, white birches against sometimes blue skies, and small beech trees still clinging to their dry golden leaves.”

The house is beautifully decorated and comfortable creating a real homey feel. Our clan spent precious moments playing board games(provided with the house) with the kids when we were not taking long walks, spending time at the library (the staff there were so welcoming and friendly!). We enjoyed speaking to the friendly people at the art/cofee house across the way and to the locals selling their products at the farmers market. A trip to the general store for lunch was a treat for the kids as was fishing at near by Paige Pond. The countryside is amazing for long bike rides as one of our clan took advantage of. This place allows oneself to step back and take the opportunity to reconfirm what is truly important. The house and setting is truly a gem!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.

My family rented this house with my sister and her family. We had 2 young children and 2 teenagers. The house worked out great for everyone and the owners were very accommodating. There is a lot to do in Craftsbury and the surrounding area and the house was central to everything we wanted. Besides having the Common right out our front door, the library was two houses over and a small bookstore/coffee shop was across the Common. There was also plays put on at the library and Sterling college the weekend we were there. The kitchen is a little small but the rest of the house more than makes up for it. The bedrooms were large and comfortable and the bathrooms were well done and clean. We are looking forward to coming back!!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.

We had a lovely time in Chandler house. We stayed during the Christmas vacation and enjoyed the snow-covered hills and vistas, cross-country skiing at the nearby Craftsbury Outdoor Center, alpine skiing at Jay Peak and Stowe, restaurants and just hanging out in the house. One especially fun day involved cross-country skiing on the commons. Not too distant is the Willey’s general store – which is worth a visit just for its incredible size and variety of items despite an unassuming storefront. Nearby is Mill Village Pottery, with potter Lynn Flory, who has many unique pieces including an invaluable rice cooker. The kitchen, while small, is incredibly well-equipped. Each room was well-appointed and had a distinctive character. The place was very clean and well-maintained and also offered considerably storage for ski equipment. We would definitely return, possibly for a summer trip to experience the non-winter activities in the area.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.

Chandler House offers the ideal getaway, tucked along the bucolic Common Of Craftsbury for quietude, yet a stone's throw from the seasonal activities such as nordic touring at the Cratbury Outdoor Center or swimmingiat nearbyllake Caspian. Our small group of women had "fled the homefronts" for a weekend escape. After kilometers of perfectly groomed nordic skiing the wood fires back at the "Inn" were a welcome pleasure to kickback and watch the snowflakes fall. The well-equipped kitchen maximized its petite square footage, such that the cook could throw the meal together while sharing appetizers and stories with the rest of the crew at the adjoining large dining table. Bedrooms were spacious enough to accomodate sitting areas so privacy could easily be snatched up. Chandler House sits midway along the historic commons, lined with quintessential white house with green shutters to one side and the environmental Sterling College to the other;the past and the future seeminglessly merging.Sipping a glass of wine, watching the late winter sun vanish and leave an almost dreamlike sepia-toned landscape in its wake, a tethered llama walks by with its handler....all is calm, all is rejuvenated once again....Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway, adventure seekers.

I recently stayed at the Chandler House on a late March weekend. I was there with a small party of friends. We all functioned beautifully in the space as each guest room is large enough for sleeping and sitting and relaxing. Beautifully furnished and in clean and respectable condition. Private baths, great linens & towels. Lovely transitional style sitting room with good morning light. The kitchen work space although small was well equipped forcing meals to be simple, less work and fuss in order to enjoy the great outdoors. Large table for gathering. A clean & comfortable environment all around. Down the road a piece is Craftsbury Touring Center, a first class ski touring center and open seasonally for biking, hiking, rowing, etc. Conditions were amazing! Given the time of year, one could find dining near by, but we enjoyed our meals at Chandler House that we pre-planned and prepared ahead of time. I would highly recommend it for intimate gatherings of close friends and relatives. I just spent the past weekend with very close girlfriends in this incredible colonial home located on Craftsbury Common. The house was well equipped, and lots of wood to keep the wood-stove and fireplace going. To top it off Craftsbury touring center had perfect conditions to just make a great weekend perfect.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway.

We drove up from Boston, allowing a full day to experience the many back roads and small towns along the way; very enjoyable. Our timing coincided with the turning of the leaves, making the views particularly enjoyable. Craftsbury Common is a storybook village, very peaceful, and the perfect escape from the stress of everyday life. Traffic is almost non-existent. Chandler House is situated on the Common, in the center of the village. It is well maintained, inside and out, and very comfortable. Views, from the rooms, are of the Common in front and distant mountains in the rear. The kitchen is small but well appointed (we enjoyed a gourmet meal for eight, cooked from scratch) and the kitchen table easily seated eight. Services are limited in the village but you are within a short drive of several neighboring towns having groceries, restaurants, etc. We highly recommend Chandler House and will definitely return.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers.

We live in Vermont full time and have stayed at the Chandler House three times in the past year. Craftsbury Common is a world apart, even compared to our quiet home town north of Burlington. The quintessential town green seems like the center of quiet and contentment in the universe. Then on your morning walk you stumble onto a training camp for young circus performers, or a brook full of native trout. Sitting in front of the bedroom fireplace watching the moon shine on the frozen green after a day of skiing on the best x-country trails in the USA can’t be beat. The kitchen, though compact, is well supplied with all you’ll need for cooking, serving and dining at the beautiful harvest table that comfortably seats a crowd. We found staple foods such as olive oil, some basic spices, sugar, and even some genuine Vermont maple syrup on hand. There is a general store in nearby Craftsbury Village and a weekly Farmers Market for additional supplies. With one exception, the bedrooms are large, with comfy chairs for relaxing by the woodstove or fireplace pre-stacked with wood – just strike a match and light. The small bedroom is conveniently situated just off the kitchen for the early riser or breakfast chef. All in all, we found the house perfect for a reunion with friends, as a ski-house during the a Craftsbury Outdoor Center race weekend, and as a wonderful summer retreat to show off the Northeast Kingdom to visitors from overseas.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.
