Our party of 8 adults spent 4 days in Damascus, enjoying hiking and the Virginia Creeper Trail. This house was the PERFECT place for us. The house is simply charming. All 8 of us (2 couples, 3 single women and 1 single man) had places to sleep comfortably. The dining room could fit all 8 of us seated together. The living room had plenty of comfortable places to sit. Great big front porch. We could walk to restaurants, to the bike rental (recommend Bike Station down the street), even to the AT trail as it goes right in front of the house! Damascus is a great place to visit. The homeowner was delightful, making lots of suggestions for us. She supplied linens. Would not hesitate to recommend this "cottage" to anyone! P.S. You like to cook, bring your own knives and cutting board and know that the oven runs hot.

Recommended for: Girls getaway, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, tourists without a car, age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children.

Owner response: I am glad that you all had a great time in Damascus. Yes, the Bike Station is a great bike rental agency. There are several more within two blocks of our rental home. I hope you adventurers will come again!

We had two families stay at the River Rose Cottage for a long weekend (4 adults, 4 kids). It was a spacious, clean, charming guest house that afforded us plenty of space to spread out with beds for 10, multiple common areas, and plenty of hidden nooks and crannies inside and outside for children of all ages to explore. The proprietress, Susie, is friendly and has delightful stories to share about her long love affair with Damascus, as well as endless suggestions and recommendations for activities, trails, restaurants, bargains, live music, carnivals, and more. The house is decorated with many homey touches and decorations and is well appointed with dishes, pots, pans, cutlery that you need to make meals at home and save money on eating out (though eating out in Damascus is very affordable). The home is right on Main Street, a short walking distance to the Appalachain Trail, all the local bike rental shops, several restaurants, the Dollar General, the bank, a park, the river, etc. Our stay at the River Rose Cottage was truly the highlight of our trip.

Owner response: I felt like I was teaching school again. The children from these families were so inquisitive. They wanted to know about the history of the house and the people who had lived in it. They had drawn maps of the house and the backyard. Cute little explorers! Actually, our home sits right on the Appalachian Trail. When sitting on the front porch, it is not unusual to see some of the hikers who are making their way from Georgia to Maine. Yes, we have enough beds to sleep ten but I prefer that 8 or less stay in our home. With all the beds, there is plenty of room for people to spread out and find a quiet place to sleep! If you have more than 8 in your party, I can recommend other inns where the overflow of people can stay.(in the same block) I had a great time talking to the guests. We agreed that one thing we liked about an old , stately home like River Rose, is that you never know what is around the next corner!

One of the rare places to stay in Damascus if you have a larger party. The house is comfortable, and centrally located for hiking or biking. There was a dining guide and a map of town for us to use. We decided to cook for ourselves, and enjoyed preparing and sharing our meals. The porch acts as an extra room -- more than enough seating to enjoy the cooler evening breezes.

My husband and I just spent two nights with two other couples at the River Rose Cottage. We had such a great time cycling down the Virginia Creeper Trail. Our stay at the Cottage was so enjoyable. It made us feel like we where at our grandma's house. So clean and cozy. The only thing missing was the smell of a fresh apple pie cooking in the oven.

I enjoyed staying in Damascus. They have Bluegrass in town and in Chilhowie on Monday night. You can even drive up to the Mt. Roger's school on Tuesday night for a free lesson on your choice of Bluegrass instruments! It is a friendly town... as they say, "friendliest on the Appalachian Trail". The cottage has the most character of any house in town. Clean, neat, well appointed. Great location, friendly hosts. I liked being able to walk anywhere I needed to go from the cottage. Walking along the river was a highlight. Quincey's was my favorite restaurant. I would definitely stay here again and have recommended it to my friends. This is definitely a walking town. The art and antique shops in close by Abingdon are a bonus. Many fine restaurants and theater are there. Another photo op was at White's Mill. I like photographing the old homes, the mill and old barns in the area . The William King Art Center in Abingdon was a highlight to me. The Barter Theater is a destination unto itself. The hosts give you plenty of ideas on what you can do in the area but they give you privacy as well. This is a large home with plenty of room...spacious with beautiful architectural appointments. Great front porch!

I felt as though I had stepped back in time in this B&B! If only those walls could talk! The rooms in this house are not only decorated with Southern charm, but are VERY large and quite accomodating for my family of five. Other than biking down the Virginia Creeper, one of my favorite activities while staying in Damascus was sitting on the front porch of this magnificent home in the early evening. My family was able to walk to the restaurants, the river, and shops. Thanks, Susie for a WONDERFUL stay! You are the best and I HIGHLY recommend your place. I plan to make it back there soon! Happy trails to you!

Owner response: I thank you for the great review. I just wanted to add that River Rose Cottage is a vacation rental and not a B and B. I do wish I had time to cook something special for all my guests!

                  Owner info

                  Year Purchased: 2008

About the owner: My husband and I are the proud parents of 5 children and 9 grand children. I was a Kindergarten teacher and he was an engineer. We raised our children in the Atlanta area and moved to Damascus in 2003. I had seen a picture of the Virginia Creeper Bicycle Trail in 1996. We came to investigate this beautiful mountain area, and I did not want to leave. We were able to buy a Bed and Breakfast in Damascus which I have operated since '03. When people ask me, "Where is your favorite place to visit?" My answer is Damascus, Va. These mountains, streams, and friendly hometown atmosphere bring peace to my soul.

                  Why the Owner Chose Damascus:
People wanted to come to Damascus and be able to stay longer than 1 or 2 days. Also, they wanted to have access to kitchen facilities. They wanted a place where children would be welcomed. We have a private backyard with lots of shade trees, playhouse and sandbox which provides a safe place for children to play outside. I just felt like there was a need for lodging other than a bed and breakfast establishment.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
I love the front porch. When you speak to people as they are walking by, they usually stop and say hello. I have a piano in the living room. When my family comes, we enjoy playing the piano and singing together. The house is so large that when you want private space, you can find it. Sometimes vacation rentals are small and people feel like they are crowded. There is plenty of space to find privacy, if you want that as part of your restful vacation experience. I love the backyard. It is so private and so shaded. I call it "My secret garden."
