Captains View Nestled on the Beach

Captains View is a cozy two bedroom beach house overlooking the southern bay of Cherokee Sound. The front porch is definitely the most frequently used area of the home partly because of the view but also because it provides a shady, secluded, breezy spot to relax during your vacation. It is the perfect place to have your morning coffee, read a book in the afternoon, or retire after a long day of bone fishing.
The House is situated only a few footsteps away from the Long Dock where all types of activities can take place. There are many flat sand bars to walk on during the low tides; they are great places to find beautiful shells. Early tides bring fish including the allusive 'Bonefish' that rome freely along the shallow bars of Southern Bay. 'The Long Dock ' and its uncounted wooden pieces have with stood many hurricanes sometimes with little reconstruction. This dock is a pillar of the community and its residents, as well as non residents , both old and young, have helped maintain its condition giving them use and enjoyment. There is loads of history is Cherokee from early settlements so make sure to bring your hiking shoes! There are networks of uncharted paths from several hundred of years ago to be explored . Wooden boats and smacks building was an art done for years on the shore of the inner creek. You can learn more stories like this by meeting friendly locals of Cherokee and hearing about the history of this place.
Guests have access to Watching Bay beach, on the Oceanside through a private development 'The Reserve at Watching bay '. This is all within walking distance, but bicycles are great for riding through town, especially if you need to go to the grocery store. You can also rent a vehicle in Marsh Harbour beforehand to get around the island in if you wish to leave Cherokee Settlement.
The uniqueness of this home is not only what it does have but it doesn’t have. By separating yourself from land line phones(which we do not have in the home!)you can find other ways to entertain yourselves. However, keep in mind that there is free wireless internet access available so you can bring your business with you if you insist! Cable TV will give and added option for relazation and news information if needed . We hope you will come enjoy a peaceful vacation with the ones you love at Captains View in Cherokee.

Our family of four is just returning from a week at Captains View. We fell in love with Cherokee Sound, the quaint village, wonderful people, daily bike rides, bone fishing, kayaking, swimming and endless walks in the sand and on the long dock. Captains View is a delightful rental. The cottage is extremely well appointed, charming, and very clean and comfortable. If you are looking for a picture perfect post card setting, well removed from the hustle and bustle, where you can unwind and take in the immense island beauty, especially that of Cherokee Sound, then this rental is highly recommended!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.

We already had the feeling that our holiday was going be be a good one as our host was very helpful even before we had left home. We found the accommodation to be very clean, well maintained and just as pictured on the website and therefore no surprises. The beds which are usually one of our biggest concerns very comfortable. We got exactly what we were after and that was time to relax and get away from it all for a short period of time: riding bikes, kayaking and swimming. We didn't experience the pub & restaurant 8 miles away but did visit the little community there and it too was pleasant. The nearby beach was really good, the local people very friendly and the local store quite adequate for our basic needs. We enjoy cooking so we did all of our own meals in what was a very nicely equipped kitchen. We therefore would have no problem recommending Captains View for a vacation. Thank you Glenn.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: It was a pleasure having you'll stay .I was glad that i got to met you'll ,would have liked to walk over the sand banks talking but ... maybe the next visit we can do just that .

This is a very charming small two bedroom house. We were personally greeted by the owner. The place was immaculately clean. The location right on the sound offers a lovely perspective and view, and the community itself is delightful with very friendly people. People do walk by the house on their way to the pier so this isn't the most private house but we would recommend it. A daily walk through the shallow waters as the tide goes out is beautiful, and the nearby Winding Bay Beach is lovely for swimming with very few people on it. This house is great for a couple and those with kids. The village store is quite well stocked with all the basics and the staff is friendly.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with young children.
Owner response: My daughter and i we glad to met you and very happy to see such a great review for you .We wish that your memories last a life time .

My husband and I stayed at Captain's View in Cherokee Sound for 2 weeks. The home is lovely and just as it is described. Cherokee Sound is a small settlement and we rode around on the bicycles. We made use of the local grocery store and coin laundry. We used the kayaks to paddle to Duck Key to explore and we spent alot of time near the long dock and snorkeled when the tide was high. All the local folk were welcoming and helpful to us. We spent some time going in and out of Marsh Harbour. We had lunch at Snappas and Jaime's and both were very good. We took a day trip to Hope Town and climbed the lighthouse to be rewarded with awesome views. Lunch at Captain Jack's was delicious. We were on Abaco during October and unfortunately, this is considered "off season". We had wanted to scuba dive and found that all of the dive shops were closed. Many shops and restaurants were also closed including nearby Pete's Pub. We should have done more research before scheduling our vacation dates. But, none the less, it was very relaxing and we found plenty to do by the house. Our one other problem was Hurricane Sandy. Glenn was good about staying in touch with us and telling us what to do, and Stephanie found us a place to stay at a resort in Marsh Harbour at a reduced rate. That was very kind of her and much appreciated. We really enjoyed our vacation...in spite of the hurricane. Glenn is easy to work with and gives promp responses to questions . Stephanie and Sabrina were also very helpful. We definitely recommend Captain's View at Cherokee Sound!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children.
Owner response: So glad that Hurricane Sandy 2012 will only be a small memory of your stay having to weather it out .Cherokee is unique in that the "off season " doesn't effect its charm but many of the other towns are effected .

My husband, son and I stayed at Captain's View for 2 weeks and had a wonderful time. The cottage is very clean and decorated nicely. It is perfectly situated on a stretch of beach, where the water is very shallow and calm.....perfect for small children. The kayaks that come with the rental were used almost daily. Cherokee Sound is a very quaint small village that only has 1 small store....so if you are looking for wild nights out......this is not the place for you. But if you want quiet, safe, relaxation........definitely come! Marsh Harbour is about 25 minutes away, where you can do grocery & souvenier shopping, rent a boat or take a ferry to a neighboring island. The people who live in the village of Cherokee Sound are very nice and even gave us some freshly caught lobster. Our son played with some of the local children and had a great time. We would definitely stay here again.....hopefully soon,Owner response: You'll touched the hearts of many on your stay .I saw the lobster ( crawfish as we call them ) you recieved fresh from the fishermans wife at the Bridge Creek ,they were very nice .You'll are welcome again anytime .

We chose Captain's View as the place to stay for our 14 yr old son's 1st trip to the Caribbean. We couldn't have made a more perfect choice. The house is modest--nicely done & has everything you need--but it is not luxurious. What made this a trip of a lifetime is the setting. When you open up your front doors-the coconut trees & the ocean are framed in the archway of the front porch & it is absolutely breathtaking. We were the only tourists in Cherokee so we were the only ones exploring the ocean at low tide. We found so many shells it was ridiculous! We saw sea cucumbers, hundreds of conch shells & sand dollars, & even a sea slug! The water is clear & calm & it was the perfect place for my son to learn how to snorkel because the water was so shallow. We saw stingrays, beautiful fish & even 2 lionfish whose eggs escaped from the Atlantis resort. Again--we saw NO ONE else out during the day. It was like having our own private island. We enjoyed the Long Dock & felt like it was put there just for us because there were only a few others who ever used it. We went to Pete's Pub once & out to dinner 3 times in Marsh Harbour but be aware that it takes 30 minutes one way. Get groceries in Marsh Harbour when you arrive & you can get other things at the village market. The locals were very friendly & helpful & come out in the evenings to enjoy the water by the pier like a community pool. My son made friends with another teenager & they still stay in touch. The negatives- roads are horrible on this island-there are big potholes everywhere & you have to really pay attention--also we couldn't get cell service through Verizon nor get internet access. In retrospect not being able to contact the outside world became very relaxing. Glen was very helpful & friendly. If you want nightlife & action, don't come here. If you want serenity, peace & relaxation away from a crazy world--this is your place. This will go down as one of our most perfect vacations ever!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children.
Owner response: I can't take all the credit for such a nice vacation ,you are great people .You enjoyed what was there and found memories for a life time .The highway pot holes oh... have been fixed but cell coverage in The Bahamas is via Batelnet (BTC) and some AT&T customers .I look forward to a return ,all are welcome .

Our stay at Glens place was outstanding. We were there for bonefish and to relax. The house is immaculate in in the prime location in front of the long dock. Glen has the place set up with bikes and kayaks, all you need. There is a handy little store right in town. Cherokee is a cool village, nice people and true island atmosphere. No goofy tourists here, just some fishermen and casual people. Bonefish are plenty and some very large ones if you are good. Glen is great to work with, good communication and a reliable source of information. I highly recommend a stay at this location, ans I will return.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: You and your brother seems to have made the best stay possible .I look forward to a return of either or both of you .I recall one of you saying that your wife would like it ..... bring her next time .

Absolutely gorgeous home and setting. Quaint little town and a beach in your front yard for swimming in crystal clear Caribbean waters. A fun way to relax, fish, swim and sunbathe. We found many, many shells and enjoyed walking the sand banks at low tide. Also enjoyed an afternoon at nearby famous "Pete's Pub". Definitely will return.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: You found the beauty of the area . Daniel loved the diving and you'll enjoyed the boat trip to Winding Bay .The turtles at the oceans surface was a highlight .

We just spent two weeks at the house at Cherokee sound. It was an incredibly relaxing time for all of us. The house is situated on the far edge of a lovely fishing village, The people in town were great to us. Very friendly and helpful. The house has an incredible view of the water and is literally a stones throw away. The house is very comfortable and nicely appointed. The kitchen was great! AC was highly appreciated. We travelled around the island a bit and were always thrilled to come back to our lovely place on the water. We felt as if we had picked the best house and location. If you want quiet beauty this is the place. If you want bars and noisy night life go somewhere else. Lots of bonefish out front for those who indulge. The kayaks were a big plus for easy exploring. Loved our time and would go back. Go to Pete"s Pub and Gallery in Lil Harbor for lunch or dinner.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Glad to have you'll stay with such a happy time . As we talked over the challenge of the bonefish on the first few days you moved right to the top as an angler .You'll are welcome again anytime .

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1993
About the owner: I'm a bahamian male who was born English and became Bahamian after our Independence as a country in 1973. I love the outdoors, fishing ,free diving ,boating ,taking my wave runner out for a spin and off roading in a ATV or truck. I have knowledge and first hand experience of the area in and around Cherokee. I can guide on the sea as well as the land however it is not my profession!
Why the Owner Chose Cherokee Sound:
I choose to buy this home back in 1993 because of its panoramic sea-coast view. Captains View is named after its original owner Capt. Roy P. Russell J.P. This was his chosen retirement home and may be mines as well one day! Although I didn't buy it initially to rent it out, after renovating it many friends and visitors asked me to open it up to the many rental possibilities. In order to share the undiscovered area I have rented it only to a select few. This home is very precious to me and my daughters so I'm selective about who I rent to. With this VRBO being my first internet outreach, Even though i have rented for 18 years i will still only rent to a few and your satisfaction will repeat your stay.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The house is so ideally located that once I park my truck that's it for transportation. Every where i want to go is there, accessible by foot, a bike or skateboard. If I come by boat the water is deep enough off the long dock that i can anchor out in the bay and see it from the porch. The wave runner can be jetted in and about the bay at high tide and the two orange kayaks can be launched right from the bridge creek. From the front porch you can catch the best sunrises and sunsets. The ATV can be driven right up to the house .The front porch is always a good place to avoid the sun and catch conversation with guest or locals. For people with young children they can watch their kids play safely on the beach less than 50 feet away from the porch. Another unique benefit is you don't have to go far to catch a nights meal. Simply cast out your hook and line of the long dock and your sure to catch a feast. Having daughters usually means i have young adults around talking, laughing and listening to music. We usually crack coconuts and make coconut water, eat sea grapes, cocoplums , catch fish and retire after eating to a nice movie in the living room.
