Smelly yellow tap water
Smelly yellow tap water
Good news: good supply of kitchen utensils, pots, pans, etc. Clean but shabby. Definitely hasn't been rehabbed, maybe even original condition? Living/dining room furniture in good shape. Kinda cozy. Bad news: water quality is horrible, worst I've ever experienced. Not just for drinking, but when showering and flushing the toilet, it made the whole cabin smell bad. Yellow in color, even our dogs wouldn't drink it. Washing dishes with it was disgusting, showering even worse. We were notified by the owner to bring bottled water, but only in the final confirmation email, which is why I think it should be noted in a review. Shower stall is VERY small, if you have a larger person in your party they won't fit. The queen-sized bed was also very uncomfortable -- it needs a nice thick memory foam mattress cover at the least. Other beds were good, though we didn't use the fold-out couch.. The CD player was broken upon arrival. TV only gets some local college public stations (not PBS.) You're paying for close access to the beach (as long as you can climb A LOT of stairs), not a nice house. Not for the faint-at-heart! People should be aware that it is completely in the woods, so very shaded.

Manager response: We are so sorry that you had a problem with the tap water at Laketown Cottage, I certainly wish you had contacted us during your visit so we could have resolved the problem for you, a very easy fix! Seems that the water quality was your biggest concern, which we would like to address; The water at the cottage is filtered well water and occasionally the filter/softener needs adjusting, which we determined to be the case after your visit and was immediately corrected. I'm confused about your comment that you didn't receive suggestion to bring bottled water til final confirmation (after final payment was made) as that information was emailed 5/30/13, almost 2months prior to your arrival. You also received the details explaining limited TV channels, no internet, wooded area and much more. As noted on the cottage description, the cabin is located in a secluded, wooded area, a bit rustic but cozy and comfortable. We also clearly explain that it is not an easy trek for some people due to the dunes and stairs. Many folks come year after year because of the beautiful natural surroundings near Lake Michigan AND the affordability. We don't overcharge or raise rates on Holidays. Often we allow early check-in times or late check-out times which you also took advantage of. The owner maintains the cottage, and the beautiful natural surroundings~~ it's not for everybody, but our many return visitors love it!! Thanks for your input, Kathy, Mngr.
