Sandwich: England’s best kept secret.
‘No spot in Britain can be as sacred to the Englishman as that which first felt the tread of English feet’ (J.R. Green)
This south-eastern corner of England has always been the main point of communication with the peoples of Europe. In fact Sandwich has many famous and international associations and has had a very violent past.
Throughout history Sandwich has been a safe natural harbour for ships travelling between the continent and London. By the eleventh to thirteenth centuries the town had become an important major port.
A member of the Unique Confederation of South East Channel Ports – the original force behind England’s maritime Power: The so called ‘Cinque ports’ of Hastings, New Romney, Hythe, Dover and Sandwich. At their height only the Church and the Monarch were more powerful. The Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports is the head of the Cinque Ports. The title is one of the highest honours bestowed by the British monarch.
Today Sandwich is acknowledged to be one of the finest examples of A PRESERVED MEDIEVAL TOWN in the country and stands on the banks of the RIVER Stour approximately three miles from the SEA at Pegwell Bay. The political and commercial ships have left and the silted harbour is mostly for recreation and a peaceful retreat for the rich, famous and people in the know.
Sandwich Society
Many famous and important people have passed through the town, notably Thomas a Becket during his escape from Henry II and Richard the Lionheart on his return from the crusades. The Black Prince brought King John of France back as prisoner from his victory in Poitiers. Several Kings and Queens of England have visited, and Elizabeth the 1st was entertained in Sandwich. More recently, the late Sir Winston Churchill and the late Queen Elizabeth, the Queen mother both held the post of lord Warden. In the present day, the confederation of the Cinque Ports plays an active part in the ceremonial affairs of state.

The entirety of this small medieval town has the narrow and winding streets of the original Saxon street plan form circa 700 AD. With historic street names such as "LOVE'S LANE" painted in pink, which is just narrow enough for ox-carts but not as narrow and long as "HOLLY GOST ALLEY".
