Great place for a family get-together
Great place for a family get-together
We celebrated my dad's 80th birthday at the Burke House, and we had a wonderful time. The manager bought a birthday cake from a local bakery and brought it to us as a present. Thank you so much. Our party was made up of 12 adults and 1 infant. Two of the adults stayed up by the manager's RV in their camper. The rest of us stayed in the house. The house is not HGTV fancy, but it is homey and comfortable. I was a little worried because there were only two bathrooms on the property, but the basement bathroom has separate rooms for the shower and toilet, so more than one family member could comfortably use the various parts of that bathroom at the same time, and still maintain their privacy. So, the bathrooms ended up not being an issue at all. Most of us took a jet boat up the Rogue River and had a fabulous time. We saw four bears, a beaver, a bald eagle, deer, osprey, and lots and lots of other types of birds. The trip was very enjoyable. We started out with warm days with some smoke from the inland forest fires, and then the weather turned cooler, so we had a range of weather during the four days we were at the property. Thank you Burke House for making my Dad's 80th very memorable!

Owner response: Thank you, May. We appreciate your response to our home. When we purchased the property from my Mother several years ago, there was a lot of updating needed. We had the house raised in height and we totally rebuilt the lower level (and there is not a huge "house footprint"). Having 4 bedrooms to accommodate 12 guests posed the "bathroom situation" of your concern. Compartmentalizing a large bathroom solved the problem. We are pleased you had a memorable birthday party and a wonderful visit. Thanks again for visiting Burke House and Gold Beach. Come again. Sincerely, Larry and Julie
We found the Burke House to be very comfortable. Julie, (owner) was super helpful. We hope to return in the future and bring family with us. This year the river was low, but we still saw all kinds of wildlife. Stayed 6 days, and had a buck and doe on the lawn every night, saw many varieties of duck, ducklings, geese, few eagles, birds of all kinds. Twice I saw osprey fly by picture window with fish hanging out of their talons. We took good binoculars which was very helpful watching huge osprey nest with chicks in it. Three of the nights in the evening we saw two beaver swim up, waddle up the hill, disappear into the shrubs, cut down a few shrubs, drag them into the water and eat the shrubs till they were completely gone. This location is awesome for watching wildlife. If you don't see any, you're not looking. Or maybe you're to noisy. Kitchen was great, had everything. We did the jet boat ride all the way up the river. Recommend this as a must also,if you want to see wildlife galore. We also took one day to fish with a guide. We highly recommend Chris Young as your guide. We caught 3 salmon all over 25 lbs. Super fun, and interesting to listen to Chris talk about life on the Rogue River. Everyone in town was very friendly. Plus everyone knew of the Burke House when we would mention where we were staying. Got a little history on the place from locals. We liked being 5 miles off the ocean. We watched the fog burn off, not as windy as at the ocean, yet we were close enough to run to town quickly. Watch for deer on road! Would love to come back when river is up. Could dive off newer dock and explore a little more. Super location, and hope to return. Coming from 100+ degree weather we loved the cool change. Thank you Julie!

Owner response: This review confirms our objective in creating a memorable vacation experience for all ages. Proximity to a "Wild River" is unique, and having a family history of the location going back to the late 1950's enhances the experience: there have been families of beaver and otters residing in this same area all that time. While upgrading the house several years ago, we saw an Otter giving birth to just 1 baby (he was big! they usually have multiple births) on the bank of the island across from the house. We spotted the happening because of the bellowing sounds she made. She then took the baby back to her den in the riverbank, just downriver from the house. Later, we saw her swimming upriver for a short distance with the baby on her back. The abundance of wildlife is unique and heartwarming. Thanks for enjoying Burke House.
Awesome Family Vacation
Awesome Family Vacation
Great place to stay! Home was clean and comfortable. The kitchen was awesome. We had everything we needed to make meals for our large group. We enjoyed being on the river and how warm it was compared to staying right on the coast. We were even able to enjoy a dinner BBQ on the deck. Beach is a close drive away. The downstairs bedrooms were great for our kids to have their own space. We enjoyed watching the deer up close. We really enjoyed our relaxing time!

Owner response: Thank you, Crystal, for the kind review. It's great to have feed-back like yours with groups of more than 10 guests. Having 2 floors (with bedrooms on each) has proven to be an advantage with multi-age groups. Sandy beaches are fun, but our Oregon beaches can be cold and windy most of the time, as you know. Being close upriver (5 miles) affords enjoyment of both the ocean and the warmer riverside. We are pleased you enjoyed Burke House and Gold Beach. Come back again. Sincerely, Julie & Larry

we had a wonderful time at this lovely well-kept property. Everything was supplied in that wonderful kitchen. The view was so pretty and we shared lays potato chips with a buck who came every morning to eat apples off a tree a few feet away. Deer were everywhere and lots of wild like as well. The fishing was horrible as river as so low but all in all a great time.

Owner response: Thank you for visiting Burke House and your kind words. The wild life along the Rogue River is amazing and always fascinating to watch. Check out the banner photo on www.burkehouseoregon vacationrental.com. It's a photo of a Merganser duck with 30 (yes, thirty!) ducklings following her upriver. I took the photo this Spring. We hope next time you visit, water levels and fishing conditions will be improved. It's great your family had a good time. Sincerely, Larry and Julie
Overpriced and musty
Overpriced and musty
We had a group of 7 traveling thru Oregon and planned a two night stay at the Burke House. In talking with the owner, I was really excited about my selection of this rental for our group. The pictures were enticing and the amenities appealed to me. As we drove down the road to the home I immediately noticed that it wasn't as "spiffy" as in the pictures. The house looked worn. The patio chairs remained stacked and uninviting. Why weren't they set around the table in preparation for our arrival? OK...walked inside and immediately the very strong musty smell overtook all of us. Not a good beginning. Why wasn't the house aired out before our arrival? As we looked thru the house the decor was old and dated. I immediately thought “staging” would help a lot, as well as removing some of the clutter. The house was clean and well stocked with needed housewares. We enjoyed looking out the large picture windows at the river below...saw a deer and ducks. The river appeared to be very low. Our bed was OK, not the best. At 2:00 a.m. the fire alarm in the other bedroom started beeping (the battery was going out). So those guests wound up standing on a chair to dismantle the alarm…we were all awakened. Then it was trying to get back to sleep. With these issues about the home, our most important issue was with the owner. The person we traveled from Houston, Oklahoma City, and Hot Springs to visit with and lives in Oregon (like a stepfather – 94 years old!) was to travel with us on our journey thru Oregon. The Friday before our arrival in Oregon we received a phone call that he couldn’t go because he has terminal cancer. The doctor gave him two months at the most. After seeing him, I’m not sure he can last that long. We decided to cut back our travels so that we could spend more time with him. I notified Julie that instead of two nights, we could only stay one. She said she felt bad charging for the second night...but in fact, she did. I’m not sure what constitutes a reasonable cancellation, but I would think the impending death of a loved one who was to have stayed in her home would. She didn’t even refund his “one extra person” charge. Needless to say, we realized Julie is more concerned about the money than about the issue we were facing. Disappointing! Unfortunately we would not recommend this to a friend or relative.

Owner response: We are sorry our home did not meet your expectations, even though you found it "clean and well stocked". Perhaps living in a dry climate like Texas and Oklahoma does not prepare a person for our Northwest coastal damp (musty?) climate--year round. We try to maintain the interior appropriate to the home--comfortable and inviting; ie, overstuffed furniture, recliners, lots of chairs and 2 dining tables in front of the large picture windows where you can view the deer and river wildlife. Deck furnishings are kept under eaves during inclement weather. All beds were purchased new for Burke House. We are sorry about the fire alarm going off. No one likes to have their sleep so abruptly disturbed. Is there a way to predict said occurrences? Under the circumstances, if our guests had chosen not to stay at Burke House (even after arrival), we would have cancelled the reservation and refunded the payment. Terminal illness of a loved one is always stressful. We are sorry for your inconvenience. Larry and Julie
A Place Where Memories are Made
A Place Where Memories are Made
Dearest Larry and Julie: I have been in the hospitality industry for more than 15 years and take exceptional pride in the fact that I have taught a staff of more than 900 employees HOW to exceed the expectations of our guest. I have just completed a 5 day stay at The Burke House with my son and daughter-in-law, and to say that our time here has exceeded my expectations would be an understatement. Julie, the house is a "cooks house" with every detail attended to. The set up in the kitchen is perfect. Every amenity I needed to prepare some of our family favorites was here. We were able to walk in and feel like we were at home. A place where memories are made and the desire to "never leave" (hahaha) took residence in my heart from day one! Your on-site manager was very pleasant and helpful. A heart filled with thanks from our families. Respectfully, Brenda H.

A fully equipped kitchen simplifies meal prep--a necessary occupation and important part of everyone's vacation. We greatly appreciate Renee, too. Thank you, and come again. Great place for family get-together
Great place for family get-together
Our family group of 2 grandparents, 4 adult children and 1 6-month old grandchild had a great time. We enjoyed the hot tub, messing around in kyack and canoe, swimming in the river and short hikes. The river access was better that I thought it might be. There is a somewhat steep, but short flight of stairs down to a floating dock. The access is behind a small island in the river and while there is significant current it is manageable in a canoe or kyack. Young children would need floatation devices and adult supervision, however. The house is amazingly well provisioned: everything you could possibly want in the kitchen including staples like paper towels, coffee supplies, basic spices, cooking oil and more. There is a copious supply of towels, spa towels and beach towels. A good selection of jigsaw puzzles and books and wiFi. There is also a TV set, but we never got around to turning it on. If you go, don't forget to bring binoculars. On our first evening we saw an ospry grab a fish out of the water and devour it on the opposite shore. The next day it was up in a tree behind the house working on another meal. The home was very spacious and immaculately clean. There is a manger on-site who was very helpful. We are definitely thinking about returning next summer.

Owner response: Thank you Mary, for your review. The boat dock is new and we are still working to make a safe access to it. A few life vests are available for children and we will make sure the vests are accessible. We leave a couple of pair of binoculars but they are not of the best quality, but do help. The Osprey apparently live in the tallest fir tree to the East of the house. We see them yearly and watch them fishing. Sometimes, as you saw, the fish are too heavy to lift to their nest and they devour the fish on the shore. We hope you were able to see the Otters and the Beaver that live close to the house in the River bank. We will look forward to your reservation next summer. Thank you, Julie and Larry

Perfect for our family gathering!
Our large family group really enjoyed our stay here. We've never encountered such a well-outfitted VRBO home as this one. The kitchen was better stocked than many of my friends' homes! And what entertainment! River access, hot tub, games, puzzles, books, movies, cable and dish! Quiet, great views of the water and wildlife. Something for everyone! The owners were so conscientious, and made our stay a great one! Thank you.

Our family thoroughly enjoyed it. We were impressed with how the kitchen had virtually any appliance and tool for any meal home away from home. The kitchen was big enough for all 7 adults to come through and work without bumping into each other. The view was great overlooking the river. We enjoyed the hot tub every day. The grandkids loved playing on the beach. Burke House was very comfortable and clean, everyone said it was a perfect place to have a holiday break. Any questions I had prior to this was answered quickly and completely. The driveway was the only negative, It was mentioned it was steep, just didn't realize how steep. The future plans for the boat deck will be a big plus. Thanks for letting us stay here.

Going Back in Time on the Beautiful Rogue River
Going Back in Time on the Beautiful Rogue River
The Burke House is a marvelous place to spend a couple of quiet and secluded days as if you are going back to a gentler and simpler place in time. You can almost see Mr. Burke motoring back home across the river after a day at the mill, perhaps stopping on the way to haul in a salmon? The house sits down on the river and off the road so that you have complete privacy. The windows in the dining and kitchen area are huge and look out on the river rushing past. We had a delightful and restful couple of days and highly recommend the Burke House to you. It was clean, comfortable, and beautifully laid out. The manager, Renee, stopped by to see if everything was alright and it was nice to make her acquaintance. Our visit could not have beeen better and the setting could not have been any nicer. Thanks, Julie, and we will be calling again in the fall for another visit. Take care.

About the owner: Brad Burke (pictured with his catch ca. 1960's) was the Father of Julie Burke Parnes. She and her husband, Larry, purchased the family home in 2007 as a vacation home for retirement, and subsequently the home additionally became a Vacation Rental for family members and other guests. The home was partially rebuilt and refurbished by the owners to maintain a warm and inviting family ambiance in which to relax. BURKE HOUSE is believed to have been built Craftsman style about 1948 as a fisherman's retreat. Purchased by Brad Burke in the late 1950's, it became the family home. It was a short boat ride across the river to the Plywood Mill located on the South Bank of the Rogue River where he worked. Mr. Burke avidly pursued his love of fishing for nearly 40 years on the Rogue River.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Situated on approximately 1 acre of trees and shrubs on the North Bank of the Lower Rogue River, Burke house affords total privacy for guests to enjoy the deck, hot tub/spa, boat dock and expansive views of the river and wild life. It becomes a unique place to share with family or friends--just to relax or celebrate a special occasion. Five miles downriver, the City of Gold Beach provides the amenities for shopping or eating away from home. Stores to browse, unique restaurants, and shopping are all available. For specialized vacations, the Rogue River provides for fishing from your private dock. Five golf courses are within 45 minutes drive from the home--either north or south on the coast highway. Beachcombing is only 5 miles from the home. Or best of all, just relaxing to the soothing sound of the water!
