Location & View
We have 130' of waterfront on Highland Lake, but there is no swim beach per se. Most swim from the dock, much of the shoreline is rocky and not as accessible. There is a shallow area next to the dock where it's possible to wade in but again it's not a big wide sandy beach. ...moreless

Owner responseGuest comment entered by owner
It is unfortunate these guests did not contact us via any of the four phone numbers provided during their stay when problems could be addressed and corrected or explained on site and in person. The very next guests left me this email (as have many of our happy guests in 20 years): "Back home from a tremendous vacation at the lake. I would like to thank you and your brother for sharing your piece of heaven with my family. We could not have asked for a better spot on the lake. The kids and the pooch had a ball and the weather was perfect all week. Thank you again and hopefully we can do it again next year." We did not have the opportunity last year to respond to this publicly as I was away for my wedding and honeymoon. The camp is cleaned thoroughly every spring and again on Saturdays (vacuum, bathroom, kitchen) in the brief window accorded between guests. Our cleaner is a Maine woman and as it's common practice up here to leave fishing worms in the fridge she probably thought nothing of it. We spent the fall looking for belongings hidden away by these guests assuming at first they had actually thrown them out. I'm sorry their expectations were not met and even sorrier we weren't made aware in a timely fashion when face to face or a phone conversation would have been more reasonable than the quickly typed word. We have rented to repeat visitors for many years and while we are aware it's not a cottage worthy of an LLBean ad it has made many families happy memories over the years evidenced by the guest book we've kept in Bridgton. It is a family camp in which we entrust our guests with much of our family property - it is not a sterile condo that no one lives in. If anyone has further questions we would be happy to answer them privately.

Nice location, poorly maintained property
Nice location, poorly maintained property
We booked this property understanding from the pictures that it would be a bit cluttered and rustic. However, when we arrived we discovered that it was not up to basic standards of cleanliness and upkeep. We found: a) remnants of food in the sink from a previous occupant b) leftover "live bait" in the refrigerator c) dog hair on the furniture d) kitchen cabinets that smelled so strongly of mildew that everything had to be washed before use e) dirty wall-to-wall carpet f) bathroom and kitchen surfaces that had not been cleaned in a long time There was no acceptably clean bedspread for the queen bed, so we had to purchase one. We also had to purchase slippers for the family to avoid walking on the floors in bare feet. Moreover, the clutter with personal family items is extreme, similar to an attic. There is a skunk pelt thumb-tacked to a wall. Closets do not have doors and are strewn haphazardly with items like dirty old fans that no longer oscillate. Everything smells strongly of dust and mildew, causing us to eat all meals on the dock, which was in fact a lovely spot. We purchased a tent and sleeping bags and camped on the dock when the weather allowed to avoid breathing the smell of the cabin all night. The cabin has also not been well maintained. The refrigerator door was covered in rust spots. The bathroom vanity was repaired with Scotch tape. The hot water leaked in the bathtub, lamp shades fell off and lamp switches were faulty, windows had to be propped open with sticks, the shower was so small and dark that it would need to be cleaned by someone wearing a headlamp. Renter beware. When we raised these issues with the owner, we were met with an unprofessional, hostile response. It is unfortunate, because the location is quite lovely with loons on the lake, a fire pit near the water, lots of shade, and general peace and quiet. It makes for a lovely, albeit expensive, campsite. This is clearly a beloved family camp. I am familiar with such camps. However, until it is fixed and thoroughly cleaned (impossible with the current furnishings/cabinets/floor coverings), it should stay a private family retreat and not pose as a commercial rental.
