Ten acres that feel like a thousand. Designed for the senses - all of them. Give yourself a treat and spend a week in luxury on the ragged edge of the Western World. One of the grandest views in America. At an elevation of 1,700 feet you are generally above the coastal fog. Sunrise over your meadow, sunsets over the ocean. Wildlife, in addition to your own: deer, bobcats, coyotes, wild turkeys, fox and condors! Very private: Electronic locked steel gate, clothing optional 24/7. I Pod dock, XM satellite radio, two LED HDDVR's, two speakers in every room. Best for one or two couples - you'll flip a coin to see who gets the upstairs bedroom, with views to Japan and pop-up LED HDDVR TV. Clear glass skylights over every bed, for the stars. Very green: double paned, tinted Pella windows and doors, radiant in floor heating. WE LOVE DOGS AND HORSES, so if you have either and want to bring them, they would love it here. (Extra charge for horses.)
If creativity is your thing, if you thrive on originality and the unusual, this is your place. Just finished building April, 2010.
We call it Moose Lodge as a play on words, for our lovable hound. But this is deinitely not a men's fraternal organization.
SEVEN NIGHT MINIMUM, SAT. TO SAT.; FOUR ADULTS OR ONE FAMILY MAX; NO EVENTS SUCH AS WEDDINGS. If you are looking for less than seven nights, call our friends the Sayres; they have a nice two person cabin rental nearby. 831 667 8823.
'On this majestic set of battlements - watched over by eagles, suspended so far above the ocean that even the barks of sea lions are muted- who wouldn't feel safe? At this height, almost the only sound is the wind in the redwoods and Big Sur looks rugged and unscalable. I have never seen another place in the world like it. Its ridges and promontories inspire mingled feelings of peace and power and health... simply to exist here is to feel purified.' Paul Theroux, Bon Appetit, March, 1994

This listing is very accurate. The only thing it doesn't include is how marvelous the night sky looks when sitting in the hot tub, or how beautiful are the sunsets or peaceful the early morning dawns. The inside of the lodge is clever, artistic and functional. You will be entertained and pleased with the art work and architecture. It is really hard to capture the beauty of this property in a picture but this site has done a good job of showing future guests what to expect. What it doesn't show is the cozy interior and the gorgeous views from the deck. It is very clean and well-maintained and the owner even left us some wine, a cool book he authored and Moose Lodge t-shirts. We have rented here for years and were sad when we heard that High Pacific had burned to the ground in the last Big Sur fire. It was hard to imagine any place that we'd enjoy as much but we are delighted to say Moose Lodge is just as delightful a retreat and we enjoyed the outdoor shower, hot tub and new deck even more. I would for sure recommend this property to anyone and if fact we are hoping for a return visit this spring. Our favorite acitvity would be hiking. You can walk out the door of the lodge and head down the road through the Redwoods and up the hill for miles. Beautiful vistas and easy hike. Come back to the lodge, jump in the hot tub for a bit and then head out to one of many fun Big Sur dining spots. You won't be disappointed with any meal they serve. We found the Burleigh's very helpful with suggestions and attentive to our questions. Moose Lodge for us is a magical retreat that is hard to discribe. It is our touchstone. A place to get away from the demands of our busy lives. I have to say we listen to music a lot but not the TV. We ponder for hours the fog and watch for shooting stars on the deck till we fall asleep. There is nothing I could say that would be a negative. Maybe that there never seems to be a long enought stay! Go and enjoy if you can. It will be a joy and when it comes time to bid goodbye to the wildlife, the wind in the redwoods and the views you will be relaxed , refreshed and renewed. We spend most our time at the Lodge. Bring in your food and wine from town. Except for the beach, to dine and hike we rarely leave. There is no better place to go.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers, age 55+, sightseeing.

I wrote a review for this wonderful mountain retreat after a stay last year. Obviously we enjoyed it so much that we had to come back. Living in a city with all kinds of lights to interfere, I had forgotten how magnificent the night sky is-the view from the hot tub at Moose Lodge is truly inspiring. Last time we watched hummingbirds and even had a bobcat at our front door. This time there were deer munching Bill's plants, Quail families running everywhere, and fog covering the hills below. I look forward to the views in different seasons. Bill is such a gracious host-even furnishing beds and bowls for our ferocious Maltese dogs. The property is well maintained and even improved from our last visit. I recommend Moose Lodge to anyone wanting to stay in a beautiful house with magnificent views, great hiking, and abundant wildlife.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

We had the unique pleasure of staying here over the holidays - what a treat! The weather was spectacular and the wildlife viewing was unreal. We spent hours on the deck watching gray whales as they migrated south, spotted bobcats, coyotes, deer, a grey fox, and a variety of birds (no condors, though we were watching for them). This recently renovated lodge is very well appointed and in great shape - all as advertised. We soaked in the hot tub and took in the views up and down the coast, hiked up the road, relaxed, and took the short trip to town to check out the local cuisine and cultural - the Big Sur Bakery is a yummy destination. Bill was a great host and responded promptly to requests for information. If you figure out the light switches, you're likely an engineer who likes a challenge! Our dog Raven also thinks it was the best week of her life - she slept for two days after the trip. Stock up on groceries before you arrive since you will not want to leave. After a busy end of year wrap up for our businesses, the simple pleasure of enjoying the peace of this special place was just what we needed. We highly recommend it and we will be back!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, pet owners, girls getaway, adventure seekers.

My husband and I came to Moose Lodge the first week of October and though we had a few days of unseasonably snarky weather we were delighted with our spot. Big Sur is a magical place and you truly get to experience it in this halcyon perch. The setup is abundantly comfortable and you have everything you need once you arrive with provisions. You can explore and hike or just revel in spending time in such a gorgeous sanctuary. Bill and Anne(the owners) are very welcoming and gracious and were an added plus. We were 100% satisfied with this vacation. The pictures don't do it justice, you have excellent cooking, grilling, washing, facilities, great restaurants and hikes if you are so inclined, and a very helpful owner willing to be of assistance. Hummingbirds and views galore!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, age 55+.

We just spent seven wonderful days lounging on the deck watching hummingbirds, deer, a bobcat; beautiful sunsets; sitting in the "world's greatest hot tub"; and generally doing nothing as much as anything else. The house is so pretty and comfortable. Picking a place to stay from pictures on the Internet is a little scary; but this place far exceeds the pictures. The owners are very pleasant to deal with. We are looking forward to returning next year.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, pet owners, girls getaway, adventure seekers, age 55+.
Owner response: Well, bless your heart! Such nice words. And, surprisingly enough, I couldn't agree more! You were fine guests, left the place immaculate, and you will always be welcome. Including, I hope, your fine dogs Sadie, Snookums and Lily. Hope to see you all next year. Best, Bill

The lodge (affectionately known as Moose Lodge), the owner, the location, and the views exceeded our expectations. We've been to many places in Big Sur, but never to one high enough to be above the inevitable fog. Watching the ebb and flow of the evening fog enfold the coast line below us was fascinating and the sunsets were spectacular. The Milky Way and shooting stars viewed from the hot tub were heavenly. Its location as a base camp for hiking the Ventana Wilderness can't be beat. The owners are responsive, thorough, and friendly characters; who have imbued the lodge, its art, and all communications with elan and a great sense of humor.....it is Big Sur, after all.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, pet owners, girls getaway, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, age 55+, sightseeing.
Owner response: What a wonderful unsolicited review! Thank you, Pat and Naoko. Although we have never met, from our communications by email and phone, I feel we just clicked. Same weird sense of humor, same taste in art, same whatever else. Although I am probably 60 years your senior, I hope we meet someday. Bill

This is our #1 favorite vacation spot. We have been to Big Sur more than a dozen times and stayed anywhere from the Post Ranch Inn to the Big Sur campground (in a tent). Trust me it doesn't get better than this. If the are lucky enough to reserve the Moose Lodge during the limited availability, DO it! The surroundings are breathtaking, the home is beautiful, comfortable with an underlying Hi tech convenience. You can really leave your cares behind and lounge in or outside while enjoying the beautiful view. If you are adventurous, there are fun and challenging trails right out the front door. Great secluded couples retreat or a quality family vacation. your choice. We will be back. thank you so much Bill and AnneRecommended for: Romantic getaway, families with young children, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you so much, Vicky! You were great guests as well. In fact, I put your daughter Mallory's photo (at the feeding trough up the), hill in my advertising. You will always be welcome. Bill and Anne

This is the place to really "leave the cares of the world behind" ! Super nice owners, the best view in Big Sur... complete privacy, the hot tub on the edge of the deck is world class ! Top of the line entertainment system with surround sound speakers even on the deck so you can listen to the Moody Blues while stargazing at nite in the jacuzzi... we practically lived on the deck with the hummingbirds and the most comfortable outdoor furniture ever ! You'll never regret spending the $$$ to escape reality at the Moose Lodge !Recommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.
Owner response: Wow! Thanks, Marc and Carole. I didn't know we were this good! You were great guests, with shared interests. Bill

We have just returned home from a marvelous time at the house. Two of us spent most of our time on the huge deck -- both in and out of the hot tub -- simply relaxing in the warm sun as we took in the fantastic views of the ocean and the surrounding mountains and watched the eagles and humming birds. Another of us spent most of his time running up the mountain and across the ridge tops, getting excellent exercise as he, too, took in the incredible views from far above the house. We loved all the very unusual, amusing, and artistic aspects of the house - from the pipes bringing water to the faucets in the sinks to the curves and interesting angles all over. The downstairs bedroom has a marvelous view and opens out onto the deck immediately adjacent to the hot tub while the upstairs loft-like one has an even more impressive view. It is a completely extraordinary place, surrounded by nature, very comfortable, with a very high level of privacy, and with very, very nice owners. Highly recommended.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, pet owners, adventure seekers, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you, thank you, Janet. You and your family share out interests in comfort, convenience, whimsy, views and nature. We hope you return someday. Bill and Anne

Year Purchased: 2010
About the owner: My wife and I are in our seventies, going on fifties. I'm a retired judge, and Anne still teaches people how to sing. We live here eight months a year, then rent it during the summer. We enjoy sharing this remarkable place. We have two dogs, two horses, and eight chickens - the latter at Anne's home in Carmel Valley. I guess we just like all living things, including people.
Why the Owner Chose Big Sur:
It seems unlikely that one could fall in love with an inanimate object, but 40 years ago I fell in love with one that is 60 miles long and 20 miles wide: Big Sur, California. Unlike most love affairs, this one has never dimmed or disappointed me. Big Sur is my passion. It might be yours. (The 10 acres up the road is for sale.)
The Unique Benefits at this Lodge:
Life. Love. Sensuality. Music. Laughter. Reading. Privacy. Freedom to sing loud, dance 'til you drop. Bang the big gongs at the entrance. Just plain let loose. Leave frantic behind. These are unique things in our normal, hectic busy lives. Life here is not normal.
