A beautiful and enchanting house, close to Paris, but far enough away to be surrounded by the lush farmland and mysterious forests of the Ile de France. Within easy distance are the chateaux of Versailles and Rambouillet and the extraordinary cathedral of Chartres. Paris is 30 mins by a local train into the heart of Quartier Latin, or a 25 min drive to the peripherique. It is on the road to Normandy, with easy access to Giverny, Deauville, and the D-Day beaches.

The house was built as a monastic hospital in the middle of the sixteenth century under an edict by Louis XIV, and was known as the Ancien Hotel Dieu. It was built on the ramparts of what used to be a fortified village, Neauphle le Chateau. Under the house survive cellars dating from the eleventh century. The house is built on the forward edge of a hill so has wonderful views across the garden and out over farmland to the west. The house was completely restored two years ago to enhance the ancient character while bringing in the best of modern living. It is filled with antiques gathered over three generations by the same family, the present owner's grandfather and his father, the writer, Sir Peter Quennell.

The house has a very private garden and is hidden behind a high gate with a sun filled cobbled courtyard. There is a fountain and fish pond many hundreds of years old. Beside the house is a large garden of grass, hedges and an abundance of roses. On a lower terrace there are an organic vegetable garden, fruit trees and vines, as well as strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and kiwifruit depending on the time of year. There is also a tree house to be discovered, hidden in an ancient conifer hedge.

A beautiful family house perfectly situated an ideal distance from Paris, only 25 mins but train from the centre but in a charming village with a great view over rolling fields and far away churches. Maybe not for very rambunctious families as there are fragile furnishings and antiques but a glorious opportunity for spending time in an ancient family house. We loved it and hope to go back.

We stayed for a few weeks in July this Summer. The house has lots of character and charm ... big rooms, lots of space to relax and large windows with views of the French countryside. Our two little girls (5yr and 9yr) had fun playing around the big house and also outside in the garden, picking flowers and playing in the tree house. We also had family visiting for a few days and they used the top floor of the house which is like a big apartment. The neighborhood has two outstanding bakers and a great butcher - there is also a good supermarket nearby. We enjoyed fresh bread, pastries and savory treats for a late brunch at home many mornings. Versailles is close by and definitely worth a visit - the gardens and Grande Triannon / Petite Triannon especially. Note that you can drive into Versailles and park for about $6 (this is an easy way to access the gardens and not spend ages hunting for parking in the town). Paris is an easy 30 minute train ride from the local train station. We went several times - we even enjoyed renting a Vespa (see Ciao Paris website) which they dropped off for us at the Montparnasse train station. It was a little crazy riding the streets of Paris on a Vespa but definitely fun (prefer weekends for less traffic on the roads). Highly recommend this house and the owners were great to deal with.

Owner response: It was great having you and we are so glad you enjoyed the house and the gardens, I hope you managed to eat some of the salads and fruit from the vegetable patch. Thank so much for looking after everything so beautifully. Anyone who braves Paris on a vespa deserves admiration. Hope we see you back here one day soon. Alex and Carine

This house is absolutely beautiful and a wonderful place to stay! Alex and his wife are so welcoming and kind. Once you walk into this house you instantly fall in love with it! Every room is quaint and comfortable. You could spend your entire vacation in this home without seeing the sights and be happy! Myself and a group of friends stayed here for the weekend and although it is rented out on a weekly basis, Alex accommodated us for only the weekend. Very nice of him! Within 5-10 minutes from the local train station and about a 20 minute drive to Versailles. Would highly recommend this home to anyone! Thanks for letting us stay Alex. We so enjoyed it!

I was so excited to finally see this home in person and it was so much more than I had hoped for. Once we entered the courtyard we were enchanted. The home was spacious, clean, comfortable, and equipped with everything we could possibly need. This was our home base for the week while we made daily excursions to Normandy, Chartres, Paris and Giverny We all thoroughly enjoyed and spent most of our at home time in the beautiful kitchen and dining area cooking, enjoying the views off of the deck and plotting our next adventure in the beautiful French countryside.. We loved the gardens, especially the organic fruit/vegetable garden. The small village had a grocery, a butcher and a lovely bakery. All of this was only a block walk up the cobblestone street for our daily bread and wine. What a week, not quite sure how we will top this!

A truly unique experience for our family of 5, including 3 young teens. Alex is right - the house does have a soul, and style! We were comfortably ensconced in no time and there was plenty of room to congregate in the huge kitchen or individually disperse in the many spaces throughout the house and gardens. Comfortable beds, bedding. Everything works. Oven, washer, Internet WiFi, TV, etc. The home is exactly 30 min from the Neauphle station to Montparnasse, and about the same driving time on an August weekend with no traffic, so it was a relief to come back after a day with the crowds in the city, or at the Normandy beaches, settle down to cook a family dinner, and enjoy the quiet country life and views. Grocery store, bakery, supermarket all within walking distance or a short drive. An unanticipated bonus - there are books in the library you could easily lose your days and nights, completely immersed. This is our third, and by far the most memorable stay in a VRBO home. (Bring sandals or slippers for the ancient tiled floor). Very highly recommended.

Two London (Anglo - American) based Families with Children between 7 - 11, rested, explored (Versailles), ticked off (Euro Disney - less than 1 hour away), sucked in the Countryside and even worked a little. An eclectic, historic (never seen a 3rd floor like it) yet comfortable clean, property with ample room for kids and adults. Hello basket of local goodies very much appreciated and deposit returned without issue. Undoubtedly a visit to remember. However its very features and strengths from 800 years (cobbles, stairs and uneven surfaces) mean anybody with stability issues will be challenged and needs to be aware. Try it, you will be sure to enjoy and remember this little piece of historic France.

This lovely home seemed to be everything we were looking for. Once we arrived, it became clear that the home and garden, the furnishings, the village and the location actually exceeded our expectations. It provided the ideal base for our family to venture into Paris or the gorgeous countryside...or to simply stay home and relax in great comfort. My wife enjoyed getting up early each morning and taking the short walk up the cobblestone street to the village square for her coffee and croissant. We had a wonderful experience and credit Alex's and Carine's warm cordiality as well. Many thanks!
