This lovely three-level, contemporary home is situated just a short block back from a quiet beach that's reminiscent of the movie classic 'Summer of '42'. If you're looking for a quiet, relaxing vacation away from the traffic and hectic pace of Rehoboth, Dewey, Ocean City, and other nearby Atlantic beaches, Broadkill Beach will delight you.
The road into Broadkill passes a championship public golf course. It then winds through the Primehook nature preserve, a birdwatcher's and nature lover's paradise -- putting you back in time to an era where tranquility and open space still exist. The preserve with its pristine waterways for you to explore, is a favorite with kayakers and canoeists. The road ends in an inviting development of charming homes with a single road that parallels the beach. Set back from the road behind a lovely garden, the house is on a double lot. It's surrounded by trees, affording ample privacy.
Set back from the road behind a free-spirited garden of wild flowers and cacti, the house is on a triple lot surrounded by trees, affording ample privacy. The main living level includes a modern kitchen, the second bedroom with its South West decor, a full bath, and an expansive great room featuring cathedral ceilings, sky lights, a wet bar and fireplace. Through sliding glass doors, the great room opens onto an enclosed sleeping porch with expansive windows that provide the best birds eye view of Broadkill's famous home town 4th of July Parade. The sleeping porch with its fold out queen size sofa, rocking chairs, and coffee table also provides an inviting and quiet place for persons to enjoy their early morning coffee or use our wireless Internet access to catch up on their latest emails.
A flight of stairs with open views towards the beach leads up to a master bedroom suite with a king-size bed, a sitting area, a private deck that affords views of Broadkill's spectacular sunsets, and two skylights that provide enchanting vistas of the myriad of stars visible on a clear night. Lie in bed and test your ability to identify the stars and constellations; or simply delight in the view.
Our spacious handicapped accessible ground floor with double glass doors to the outside includes a third bedroom with a queen sized bed, a full bath, a separate sitting area, and a den with a fold-out sofa, Captains bed and a comfortable T.V. /gaming area. This floor with its separate entrance is perfect for a second family or elderly parents having difficulty climbing stairs.
Behind the house is a large screened gazebo, secluded by trees and equipped with a hammock, a hot tub that easily accommodates four (fabulous on cooler evenings!), a gas grill, and a large octagonal picnic table for casual dining. Between the gazebo and the main house is an enclosed outside shower with a separate dressing area.
The beach is reached by a charming wooden walkway over the dunes. Sheltered by Cape Henlopen on the south and Cape May on the north, its waters are relatively calm. And best of all, the beach is rarely, if ever, crowded. Families build campfires on the beach; and well-behaved pets are welcome.
While Broadkill Beach is 'away from the madding crowd', it is far from being isolated. Broadkill's general store is just a short walk from the house, and carries a little bit of everything including wonderful homemade donuts on weekend mornings. And if you have a desire for first-class shopping or a taste for the variety and excitement of the larger resorts at any time during your stay, Lewes, Rehoboth, and Dewey can be reached within 15 minutes or less. And even closer-by, the the old and charming town of Milton offers a refreshing kayak trip through the town along the Broadkill river followed by a delightful imbibing tour of the Dogfish Head Brewery.

The house was the perfect weekend getaway for six old friends (three couples). During our short stay of three days, we were able to go to the beach just down the block, go kayaking in the marshes, and drive to town to have dinner. But, we spent most of our time in the hot tub and gazebo area eating, drinking, and playing board games. Everything was very comfortable and the owners were extremely responsive to our needs. The house and its furnishings were bigger, cleaner, and newer than I had anticipated. I plan on coming back next year!!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Had a very relaxing week at the beach and really liked the house, beach and community. We enjoyed visiting Lewes plus a day on the ferry to Cape May, but the beach was the highlight. It was just a short walk away and was never crowded - our idea of a great way to relax. The house lent itself to our extended family, allowing us to have separate space (and bathrooms) on every floor, and we were very comfortable even on the couple days when the weather was extremely hot. The kitchen was well equipped, and we cooked most of the time but we did enjoy dropping into the corner Broadkill store. Next time we visit we will explore Milton more than we did - had a great breakfast at the Vintage Cafe one morning. Milton also has a miniature train in a very attractive downtown park (train runs evenings that events are planned) that our grandson will really enjoy. A wonderful week in a very comfortable house!Recommended for: Pet owners, families with young children, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+.

The house is very cottagey and quaint in a quiet location very close to the beach. The skylights let in amazing morning sunlight. Plenty of room for the kids to play inside and out, the gazebo and front porch were great for hanging out together or for some quiet time in the early mornings and evenings. We grilled on the gazebo for almost every meal - it is the perfect spot to do cook-out style breakfasts and dinners. The hot tub was so nice and relaxing. The beach walk over the dunes is really nice - we were able to take the wagon or the stroller with us and it was a short 5 min walk to the beach. The beach itself is pebbly (with some seaglass thrown in!) , so lots of treasures to find and very quiet with small waves and great swimming. This was the first full week vacation we have taken with both kids and we completely enjoyed ourselves here - like a home away from home. Cape Henlopen State Park was amazing and we really enjoyed Lewes for shopping and dining out. The Broadkill Store has a wonderful selection of goodies, gifts and yummy food for breakfast and lunch. A great family getaway!Recommended for: Pet owners, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+.

My family is scattered across the United States and does not get too much time to spend together, so our yearly gathering is incredibly important to us!!! Our vacation this year was the best so far!!! The weather was not the best, but the house and the gazebo were!! I am so grateful!!! The house is huge, much bigger than you think and the gazebo is awesome! The downstairs was like a little apartment for my husband, two daughters (1 and 3) and I. The only thing missing was our dogs, which will absolutely be coming with us next time. I had no idea just how dog friendly the property was and how easy it would have been to have them with us because of the way the house is set up and its size. We had a total of 8 people in the house (3 toddlers, 5 adults) and had more than enough room to spread out and get comfortable. The house was clean, easy and awesome. The beach was quiet, 2 minute walk away, and gorgeous with calm waves so we could really enjoy the water. Dealing with the owners was as awesome and easy as the house, friendly, quick to respond to questions and really just easy! What a great vacation!!! I would recommend this house and these owners to anyone and everyone!! Five stars do not come close to really explaining how amazing our trip was, even with the rain! The gazebo kept our vacation dry and comfortable!! Thank you so much for allowing us to share your home!!!Recommended for: Pet owners, adventure seekers, families with young children, families with teenagers, girls getaway, romantic getaway, age 55+.

My family enjoyed our week at this quiet getaway. The private beach is close and calm. A nice change of pace from the hustle and bustle of the public beaches. The house is beautiful, roomy and well kept. A nice getaway!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/3

This home shows so much more powerful in person; as pictures can't do it justice. It's interior is sun-drenched during the day with sky lights and large windows and every area is clean and comfortable. The detached, screened-in hut with the hot tub, grill, ceiling fans and hammock is surprisingly roomy and a great hangout with a near continual breeze. Every facet of the home is welcoming; and the kitchen is well equipped to handle any home-cooked meal. There is a porch off the livingroom which has it's own wonderful personality; a great place to bask in the morning sun with a cup of coffee, listen to the birds and read. Animal lovers will notice that the home has welcoming touches for them as well. I spent a week here and would do it again anytime! I'd recommend an eyeguard for those who like to sleep late though, because the sun comes blaring in the master bedroom sometimes before you're ready. Awesome vacation home!!!Recommended for: Pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+.

About the owner: We are avid dog lovers with two very active but well behaved beagles...Topper & Kermit, so Summer of '42 is definitely pet friendly..
Why the Owner Chose Broadkill Beach:
We loved the quiet location, the uncrowded beach where we could walk forever(and have our dogs walk with us), the quaint country store with great ice cream and sandwiches (and recently, kayak rentals), being in the Nature Preserve (it is fascinating to see the multitude of birds that frequent the preserve), being very close to great golf, and being able to sail and kayak from the beach OR Canoe down the Broadkill river! It seemed like a step back in time where life was calmer and less hectic, hence our choice of 'Summer of '42' for the name. Broadkill is a calm beach where the waves are minimal, yet great surf is available in the nearby Cape Henlopen State Park (which also has great biking and hiking trails and a dog-friendly beach. Broadkill is a unique place away from everything where time seems to stand still, yet just a quick hop in the car to the excitement of Lewes, Rehoboth, the Lewes-Cape May Ferry and other places of interest. We just plain fell in love with it!
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The beautiful access road where sights of nature abound year-round --- different in every season.
