Property description

1830's sea captain,s home on Bass River. Huge screened porch overlooking the river.

Outdoors: Several small, cozy sitting areas provide semi-private nooks for reading, napping and contemplation. You have 150' +/- of river front with use of the pier and float. Swim from the float or walk to sandy, child-friendly Windmill beach 300 yards up river. Parasailors streak across the water. Working fishing boats leave at dawn then return at dusk. Go 1/2 mile up river and see if you can buy dinner directly from them.

The beautiful, long, sandy beaches of Nantucket Sound are a 1/2 mile walk, cycle or car ride away.

Inside: Sit on the large, screened wrap-around porch and watch the river traffic @100 feet away. All manner of boats from dingeys to 60 footers go about their business. Wiannos and beetlecats are two popular single class sailboats. They race most weekends in July and August.

Explore! Find the game closet with puzzles, board games and interesting things to do. Find Zebediah Coffin's coal hole where beach gear and other treasures wait to delight the young and young at heart. Pick a beautifully appointed bedroom with ceiling fans and TV or lay your head in the paneled room, little changed in more than a century.

There is a 32" flatscreen in the living room and four smaller sets in bedrooms. The kitchen is very large with table seating for 10+, a walk-in food pantry, gas stove and oven. Some impliments and fixtures date to the mid 19th century.

The dining room has a large oval table seating 8-12. The porch seats 14+ at several tables. The library is a cozy spot to read, write or talk.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 1892

About the owner: David is one of two fourth generation owners. The first member of the sixth generation is almost five years old. We have all spent summers and vacations here and have wonderful memories. We welcome the opportunity to help you create yours.

Why the Owner Chose South Yarmouth:
Our Great Grandmother, bought the house in 1892 from Melissa Baker. Mrs. Baker and her husband purchased the property shortly after the Civil War from Elijah Parker. The Barnstable County Registry of Deeds burned about this time and there are no definitive records available prior to that purchase. An 1858 map shows the house with Mr. Parker listed as owner. A large copy of this map is on the dining room wall. We have a wonderful book explaining the map and showing details of the Cape from that period. One of the window panes has, "E J Parker" etched on it.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
What can I say? The house is a gem. Bass River is a wonderful place for family and friends. The house is a unifying focal point for the current three generations of our family. We have first, second and third cousins we see on a regular basis. No matter where we live or how far we travel this is our spiritual home. We love to share it and, if this sounds attractive, we look forward to hearing from you.
