Shelter Island is a beautiful place for a quiet relaxing vacation. The property was lovely and close to the beach and tennis. The home is old, but fairly well kept. The upstairs AC was not working while we were there, but only had one uncomfortable night. Nice cross breeze upstairs. The jacuzzi was also out of order. The owner was very friendly and helpful in answering questions and concerns. The home is in need of a very thorough cleaning, but we 5 adults certainly enjoyed our stay.

Manager response: It is true that the air conditioner, a large in wall unit on the second floor, was not working. It was 25 years old, and the compressor malfuntioned. It was replaced almost immediately. The jacuzzi, an indoor tub, was working fine one and a half months prior to rental season. Some previous renters prior to these guests may have damaged it or misused it. The jaccuzi is not being offered as an amenity at this time. The shower in the tub, however, is fine. The house is cleaned thoroughly by a cleaning service before each renter arrives. Sometimes the day before, sometimes the morning before their arrival. Most renters have found this to be more than adequate. The house is from the 1960s, and is of that style. Perspective renters are informed that the house does not have central air conditioning, or a designer kitchen, or a swimming pool, and if these are the amenities they seek, perhaps they should consider renting elsewhere. The great things about the house are its charm, the rate, the island location, the picturesque property, the life style it invites, the art work inside, the privacy, the proximity to the beach and private tennis court, and the overall tranquil vibe that one gets while staying here. Shelter Island is like no other place in the world. It is quite exceptional and fortunate for anyone to spend any length of time at this home, or on Shelter Island in general.
My Husband and I have just returned from a little get away to Shelter Island 9/8 thru 9/11. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed the house and property very much. It was lovely walking to the private beach. There is also Wades Beach which you can either drive or bycycle too. It was an end of summer getaway but we were thinking it must be even more beautiful in the fall. The house was very comfortable and roomy. We had family on Shelter Island who rented a house in Shelter island Heights but they liked our rental much better. We ate at Tomatoes and the Dory and everything was great. The other eves we barbequed on the property and sat out side. There are bycycles to use and also private tennis courts. I would return to this property again..Maybe next week.....

We had a really nice time: lovely garden with sun and shade, a house provided with all the amenities, and a very short, pleasant walk to a private Shorewood community beach. Birds sang, baby rabbits frolicked on the lawn and there were plenty of comfortable chairs for reading and contemplation. The owner was always helpful and there was a good supply of linens, kitchen things, and other necessities. The master bedroom was splendid, and the two smaller bedrooms were adequate. On hot days the air conditioning in all the bedrooms and the living room was great.

This house is very convenient as far as location - close to ferry and nature preserve. The accommodations are nice and access to private tennis court & beach is an extra plus. Owner is also very helpful and pleasant to work with. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay here.

Year Purchased: 1961
About: My name is Doreen Wieder, and I have owned the property with my husband since the early 1960's.
Why Shelter Island:
We bought the land, and built the house in 1961 as a great summer vacation property, close enough to New York City, but a great getaway. Shelter Island is truly a unique and beautiful place for a vacation. There is plenty to do, both intellectually and just plain fun! Art events, library events, great dining, and many off island activites that are close. Also if you seek it, peace and tranquility in the desirable Shorewood section of the island, where the house is located.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Benefits are the recreation, culture and restaurants of Shelter Island. There is a lot of tennis, many beautiful public beaches, one five minutes away. There are two golf courses, kayak rentals, fishing, a big nature preserve (Nature Conservancy Mashomack) with 4 hiking trails, and a lot of biking! If you like the fine arts, there are many artistic events in the many island galleries throughout the summer and year. There is the Perlman Center, a high level classical music camp for string players that offers concerts and open master classes free to the public. There is a fabulous public library with many child and senior activities. There are many fine restaurants on the island. There is close proximity to off island activities in Greenport and the north shore, where there are many vineyards that have events, or the south shore, near Sag Harbor and the Hamptons.
