We had a wonderful week in the Surfdancer house. It was clean and well furnished – even had the large pot you need to do shrimp boils (we got the shrimp from Risky Business down the road). We gave the hot tub a real workout! You can walk to the beach, grocery and several restaurants from the house; plus there is a 3-mile walking loop around the development behind the house. We enjoyed birdwatching on the small lake behind the house were we saw Buffleheads most days. Egrets and herons were around along with gull and terns – once we saw a pair of Great Cormorants fly-by. For the second year in a row we heard Chuck-Will’s-Widow calling at night (Avon is the only place we ever hear it). Some of the wintering ducks had left Pea Island by the first of April, but there were tens of thousands of Double-breasted Cormorants on the sandbars and small islands at the Oregon Inlet – they were all bunched up like penguins in Antarctica. The cormorants would fly over Pea Island in never ending waves – we had never seen anything like it. We saw 33 bird species at Pea Island NWR including: a Piping Plover that lead us away from its nesting area, American Oystercatchers, Carolina Wrens, lots of Dunlins, Forster's Terns, Gadwalls, Green-winged Teals, Herring Gulls, hundreds of Northern Gannets flying off-shore, and Pectoral Sandpipers We found a nice wooded walk down by the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse (park at 35°14'52.96"N 75°31'57.79"W). You could walk 8 miles RT if you wanted – we only walked 6 miles. There is a pond on the walk where you can see Wood Ducks. Most people seem to come here for the fishing and wind surfing. We didn’t find any beach glass this year but got some nice shells on the beach. The Continental shelf is very close to shore near Avon. You can get pelagic boat trips to see ocean birds from Brian Patterson in Hatteras on selected days (see the Internet for the schedule). We always plan our trip to Avon so we can eat lunch at Basnight's Lone Cedar Café in Mateo (35°54'2.44"N 75°36'39.27"W). They have the best She Crab soup you can get in North Carolina (the only place better is the Seewee Restaurant (32°55'35.08"N 79°42'53.05"W) in a remote part of coastal South Carolina). They also have nesting Ospreys, Greater and Lesser Black-back Gulls, etc.

This house was absolutely fantastic. It has a beautiful view out over water, and the location was perfect. It was centrally located to almost every activity we had planned and being a 30 second drive from the only major grocery store on the island was extremely convenient. The house was well stocked with cooking and eating utensils and was spotlessly clean when we arrived. Awesome house, awesome vacation, and I hope to someday return.

My family and I stayed at the Surfdancer last week, a short time after the island was struck by Hurricane Irene. The one road coming down OBX was washed out and all traffic to the island had to come over via ferrys from the mainland. Needless to say, this was an adventure, but the landlord did a great job of keeping us informed of events as well as helping us get the house under trying circumstances. The house was absolutely great, lotsa room, with great sunsets over the lake as well the sunrises. My family and I would definitely plan on staying here next year.

Surfdancer exceeded our expectations! It was clean, spacious enough for our family of 9, pretty, and comfortable. And it was well-stocked....we especially appreciated the "kid stuff" like the high chair, children's dinnerware and silverware, and games. Then there's the gorgeous view of the lake from the back decks...breathtaking! And walking to the beach was just a short walk. Overall, we rate our stay at Surfdancer to be excellent, and would recommend it to anyone who dreams of OBX.

From the scenic views and relaxed pace of Avon to the house itself, we had a great time. Thanks Glen. Our beach time was great. We loved all of the local restraunts we tried, specfically Toppers and Dirty Dicks, both of which are in walking distance from the house. The ferry ride to Ocracoke and trip to the lighthouse were a fun experiances for our children and the adults in our party enjoyed quite nights on the deck watching the stars. The people of Avon are fantastic as well, really make you feel welcome and at home. The house itself is very nice and comfortably slept our entire party of 10. The walk to the beach is maybe five minutes, at most. All-in-all, a five star vacation at a great price, thanks again Glen!

This was our second year spent at the Outer Banks and at Surfdancer, and based on our experience we're considering going back again (which we've never done -- instead going somewhere different each year). First, Surfdancer is everything the description (and other reviews) say it is. We're a bit picky about where we stay, although all we ask for are clean, well-maintained accommodations. We'd never rented through VRBO before, so we were a little nervous. The minute we walked in, we knew we'd picked the right place -- Surfdancer is one of the best-kept properties we've ever stayed in. Second, the house is in a quiet area but extremely close to everything. The pool, a supermarket, restaurants, movie theater and a hardware store are all within a 2-minute drive (and very walkable). The beach is a 5-10 minute walk and everything else is very close. Avon is great because it's not overbuilt and overcrowded, which is exactly why we went back. Swimming, the beach, biking, tennis, kiteboarding, sightseeing -- it's all right there. Finally, Glen is a great person to deal with. He's extremely nice, is very quick to respond to emails and phone calls, and has never failed to answer a question or request. Our first trip to the Outer Banks was the week that Hurricane Earl came through, and Glen was on the phone at all hours providing hurricane updates and advice. The county mandated an evacuation, and Glen was in contact throughout, which was very reassuring. We're considering going back again, and if we do I'm sure we'll be staying at Surfdancer.

The description of the property is very accurate. It was a very short walk to the Ocean, which was very uncrowded where we were. The house was very clean when we got there, appliances were easy to use, and there was an outside charcoal grill to use. There was a plaza with a grocery store, dollar store, movie theater, restaurants, and anything else you need just a five minute walk away. I'd strongly recommend this place to anyone looking for a great week. Leaving Sunday was nice as well, traffic on the way out wasn't bad at all. Glen was great about everything. He made it very easy and smooth. There were no hidden fees or anything. What he said it was going to cost was exactly what it did cost. If there's an open reservation at this house, take it!

This was our second Outer Banks vacation (April17-23/2011) and the second time renting Glen's house (Surfdancer). This house is just great for our family. Lots of room for them to do all their indoor activities. There are all sorts of board games, cards, puzzles, and two game systems. And the hot tub was just as nice as it was the first time!! The sunsets are just amazing from the second and third level outside decks decks. They just spread out into this beautiful orangey-pink sky! Also, from the third floor front bedroom you can see the ocean from the outside deck. Glen is such a great person and we love renting his wonderful home that he is so kind to rent out. We had a wonderful time with great weather. Our kids loved the beach and flying their kites. We enjoyed the local restaurants and shops. We had a very relaxing vacation that was most definitely needed!! Thanks ever so much Glen, we will be back soon for another vacation at 'Surfdancer'!!

We very much enjoyed our stay at this delightful, modest 4-bedroom home. It was very clean, and well-maintained, and remarkably so considering it was the end of the season as well -- we were impressed with how well it was kept. Kitchen was fully furnished with everything we needed -- dining rm even included a high chair, and children's utensils. Utility closet was loaded with bogie boards and beach chairs --- so nice that we didn't have to pack them for the trip! The walk from the house to the beach is less than 10 minutes, and it felt like we had the beach all to our selves nearly every day -- just wonderful. It's located 10 minutes from the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and beach, 15 minutes from the (free) Ocracoke Ferry, and about 20 minutes from the Bodie Lighthouse --- all of which were great experiences for us. The Avon area is definitely more subdued than Nags Head, but that's what appealed to us, so it was wonderfully quiet and uncrowded --- and had very little traffic. Lots of mom and pop shops and restaurants and not a lot of big chains (or big crowds!) so if that appeals to you, this is a great location. Owner is very personable and quick to respond to inquiries --- it was a pleasure to work with him throughout the reservation process. Check-in and check-out were easy and simple. Overvall, a terrific experience --- we definitely plan to return!

our return to surfdancer was just as great as the last time. Glenn (the owner) could launch another career as a property manager. He is extremely easy to work with and he keeps surfdancer in supreme condition. It is everything the description says and more. The location is ideal for families or just to get away and relax. House is well furnished and plenty of space. This was our 18th rental on vrbo and surfdancer and glenn rank in at the top. Don't hesitate to rent! John and Maryann, Iowa

Dear Glen, Your house is beautiful and we are so thankful to enjoy it. We have rented from you 6 times in 4 years and have never been disappointed. You have everything there to make us comfortable and at home. You also have something most beach houses don't have...a beautiful lake view with wonderful sunsets every night. You can sit right on the livingroom couch and enjoy it or go out on the deck. We love how close we are to the beach (you can easily walk from the house) and also to the food store. Really, you never have to leave Avon while you are staying there because there is so much right there. However, if you don't explore the island you'd be missing out on a lot of fun stuff to do. We enjoy taking the free ferry to go to a different beach for the day. There are also the Native American Museum, The Pea Island Observatory, Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum and the Ginger Bread Bakery (YUM) are just some of the fun things to do. There are some nice shops to look in too. You could also just sit on the beach everyday and relax. Anytime we go to the Outerbanks we will always rent your house Glen! Thanks for everything, Tim and Kristin and the little Lyons

My family and I went on our first trip to the Outer Banks this summer. We absolutely loved our stay at the Surfdancer. The house was bright, spacious, cheery, extremely well cared for, and exceptionally clean! It was a very easy walk to the beach and the lake view and sunsets at night were amazing. The kitchen was well stocked for cooking local fresh seafood and the location was great for a quick drive to restaurants, the pool, shops, and more. This house would be wonderful for any family looking for a very comfortable home environment with all the needed amentities for a relaxing and fun beach vacation! When we make our trip again to the Outer Banks I would love stay here again. Glen made the process of renting easy and stress free! Thank you!

The Surfdancer was excellent. The house was very clean and looked just like the photo's. Glen was very helpful and sent us all kinds of extra info. We had lots of room and enjoyed the hot tub and the view at night from the back decks. I would recommend this house to everyone! We enjoyed the ocean. It was a short walk from the house and the beach was nice. It was never crowded and we even saw some dolphins. We were close to everything and walked to the Food Lion, the movie theater (on the day it rained), to the pool and tennis courts. We did go to Hatteras Lighthouse, took the ferry to Ocracoke island and spent the day there. We ate out twice Mack Daddy's was excellence and then on Ocracoke Island we ate at Howards Pub and Grill and it was really good too! This was our 1st vacation to OBX and It was awesome. We all enjoyed ourselves and will return!!

This was our first trip to the OBX, and we cannot wait to go back. Surfdancer was everything these reviews say it is... wonderful. The first night we walked out to the beach to stick our feet in the water and when we came back to the house we stood in awe of the sunset out over the lake, we knew then that we were going to have an awesome week, and we truly did; It was perfect. Avon is a great location for those who want to get away from the busyness of life and enjoy a laid-back, uncrowded vacation. Thanks Glen for a great house at a great price, we hope to be back.

This place is a sportman's paradise. We just returned to Florida from the Outer Banks and we are already planning a return trip for next year, or sooner if possible ;). This house would be a great selection for the adventure travelers. ie. kiteboarders, because it has great storage for all your gear, a HOT shower outside by the carport and a great hot tub on the balcony to relax your sore legs after another great OBX session. The place is also well equipped for the family travelers and I would highly recommend Surfdancer for all.

surfdancer was everything we needed it to be. our son was married on the beach and we had a party for 22 people in the house and it was more than enough room. also, the well provisioned kitchen had everything we needed. we have stayed at a lot of beach cottages over the years and hands down this was the cleanest one we have ever rented. also, the owner, Glen, was very helpful in giving us information we needed to make the wedding go off smoothly. we loved the beaches, the lighthouse and all the touristy things there were to do there and would definitely go back to surfdancer.

SurfDancer is a Lovely beach home on the Outer banks. The four bedrooms and three baths accommodate a large family very well. I especially enjoyed sitting on the deck and watching the sunrise and sunset. The house is very well equipped. The owner, Glen, is extremely helpful, and he goes out of his way to make sure that everything is right.. Surfdancer is conveniently located in Avon, and it is only a short walk to the beach. From the beginning, Glen has been very helpful, and recommended several different web sites where we were able to obtain a lot of information about the outer banks before we arrived. I would also recommend Toppers (withing walking distance) Great food. Overall, one of the most enjoyable vacations ever!!

Surfdancer is a wonderful place to stay and Glen is a great host! I second all of the comments about the kitchen, the layout of the house and, especially, the hot tub. The frogs at night are a joy to hear. That probably sounds odd if you've never heard them. The location is superb with nearby grocery stores, shops and restaurants but remote enough to be out of the hustle and bustle which is what I want from a vacation. Be sure to head south and visit the lighthouse and Hatteras Village.

This was our first time staying at the house, first time at any house, and our first vacation with two children. It worked out perfectly- the house itself was perfect- great layout and space, well-stocked kitchen, great hot tub, and quick access to the beach. We especially appreciated the IKEA poang chair- just like at home. For those of you with kids, it worked out great- the high-chair that was there worked well. Great views from the deck, wonderful time sleeping, just great overall. We were very impressed with Owner Glen's help and information, he definately keeps the house up well, and does a great job communicating. We hope very much to stay again next year, and possibly make this a yearly family vacation.

We had a fabulous time at the Surfdancer last week! The spring peepers in the lake were awesome at night - a great serenade while using the hot tub. The house was great - it's the first place we've been to that had decent pots and pans and not the teflon coated stuff with it all peeling off. We saw 4 deer pass through the pathway to the lake one day and one evening a raccoon was out wandering around in the path. The house was very clean and has everything you need. It's a quick, easy walk to the beach and the grocery store is very close and handy also. Glen is very easy to work with and will make sure you are satisfied! Thanks again!

My family (husband, myself, my boys 7 & 5, and my mom) were extremely happy with the 'SURFDANCER' beach house. This was our first trip to the Outer Banks and we couldn't have asked for a more wonderful house to stay in. 'SURFDANCER' has everything you need and more. Large kitchen and dining area made it really easy with two kids. Living room was really comfortable to have all of us in it. And the view was awesome. The kids enjoyed the bunk bed room and my husband and I like the fact that the hot tub was right outside on our deck. It is also very quiet and peaceful so if relaxtion is what you are looking for then you have found it here. Glen, the owner is such a sweetie too. He called to make sure we got in all right and we were actually able to meet him while we were there. He has a kind soul and is a wonderful owner to deal with. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we will be back ASAP. You WILL NOT be disappointed in 'SURFDANCER' or Glen Morgan. We give it five stars and five A+s. So enjoy and have fun. The Lanning Family

We rented over the week of July 4th, and had a great time. Our family does a ton of research before selecting a rental property, and we were thrilled over the selection we made (Surfdancer). I was personally struck by the cleanliness of the house. Our single family of five rented the house, but we could have easily shared the house with another family. The location was perfect for us - close to the beach, grocery store, etc., yet away from the commercial feel of Kitty Hawk and Nags Head further north. Highly recommended for younger families.

If they weren't at the beach or pool, they were in their room hanging out. Wow! What a great place to stay. Surfdancer has so many amenities. Being lakefront, you can send the kids kayaking and still watch them from the deck. The ocean is a very short walk across the boardwalk. And sound access is a short drive to the south for some of the best windsurfing. The house is very well taken care and has everything you need to make you feel at home. From board games, crock pot, blender, books, etc. the owner has thought of everything. Speaking of the owner, he is the best to work with and even gives you a courtesy call to make sure you arrived safely and to see if you have any questions concerning the house. I highly recommend Surfdancer as your place to stay while visiting the Outer Banks.

Every detail to enhance our vacation had been thought of, from the helpful binder of maps and ideas for day trips, to the blender and margarita glasses waiting in the kitchen. We felt at home the second we walked in the door, and are counting the days until we can go back. WOW! This is our 2ND year at Surf Dancer and we wouldn't stay anywhere else in the OBX. We have stayed several places before this and none were as nice. It is so clean, comfortable and decorated so nicely. The lake view is the best. We love to sit and look at the sunsets over the lake everynight from our livingroom. How many places can you do that? The owner is very friendly and easy to work with. The beach is so close that you can walk back and forth if you don't want to pack a lunch. We have rented over 15 times thru VRBO and Surfdancer is in our top three favorites. The house is furnished extremely well from tv's (in every bedroom plus the living room)to cd and dvd player(with nice selection of movies) down to a wine opener in the kitchen. This property has indeed provided everything to just walk in and have a great time. It is well located for shopping plus many different day trips. The owner is quite easy to work with and very accommodating to your needs and wants. We plan on returning in the fall of 2009. Maryann and John Altoona, Iowa
