Holiday Guest 'Ohana' ...Secluded & Tranquil...Ocean Views
- Minimum stay:3 nights
- Internet:No
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Our cozy guest ‘Ohana’ is located in a separate building from the main house on an organic 16 acre property rich with tropical landscapes, exotic edibles and forest reserves. This 440 square foot private guest residence offers 1 bedroom, 1 bath, fully appointed kitchen (with stove, oven & microwave), main room and outside garden lanai. We utilize natural resources (solar energy and rainwater) to support a self-sustaining lifestyle. WiFi access.
A well stocked bookcase provides guidebooks, illustrated maps, specialty books on birds, trees, flowers, fish & more…plus Hawaiiana reading material and legends.
Eco-friendly tours are available to guests upon request. Exotic and tropical fruit is seasonally available for sampling and harvest throughout the private estate. When ‘in-season’… learn to pollinate vanilla orchids, harvest cacao pods and pick exotic tropical fruit like lychee, dragonfruit, loquat, papaya, figs, poha berry and white pineapple. Fresh herbs are available from the gardens for food preparation.
At our 1535 ft elevation, morning weather is typically sunny with comfortable temps in the mid 70’s to low 80’s: Rain (seasonal) mid - late afternoons and / or early evenings. Great sleeping year-round.
Nearby swimming / diving / snorkeling can be enjoyed adjacent to City of Refuge at “2 Step”, Pebble Beach or Ho’okenna Beach (which has kayak rentals & a concession stand). We offer beach chairs, towels, mats, cooler, and boogie boards for guest use. Enjoy Humpback Whale sightings (in winter) and Spinner Dolphin antics while relaxing on Big Island sandy beaches.
Note: A locked gate at the main highway restricts access to the property. Key required. Ohana guests must have a vehicle with 4 wheel drive (4WD) or all-wheel drive. We are 'off-road' approx ½ mile from the highway (‘Mauka’ side). The unpaved grassy inclines are too steep for 2WD rental vehicles with ‘street’ tires.
Local Farmers Market at Keauhou on Saturdays and Captain Cook on Sundays.

If the sterile resorts which look the same everywhere in the world, with their trained politeness and filled with chemicals to keep their landscape severely manicured are not for you, this is the place to be. It's a little paradise where you may learn as much as from a visit to a botanical garden, with beautiful trees and plants, spectacular Hawaiian Blue Jade vine flowers, breathtaking beautiful orchid bushes, fantastic bromeliads and strelitziaceae, fragrant gardenias, rare cactaceae, lush ginger flowers and iconic big yellow hibiscus, to name a few. It is a heaven for beautiful birds ranging from all kind of cardinal species, to pheasant and wild turkeys. Their divine songs is everything that your are going to hear there. The accommodation is clean and impeccable, the owners' generosity is heart moving. They spoiled us with fruits freshly picked from their organic orchard and they continuously made sure that we have a wonderful stay at their guest ohana. For us personally it was such a privilege to meet them and we hold so much gratitude in our hearts for everything they did for us. Thank you Katey and Rick.Did you find this review helpful? The owner couple (Kate & Rick) and the beautiful green house surrounded by flowers, veggies, and fresh spring scent made our honeymoon be perfect!!! Each corner of the place is very clean, well-maintained, and I don't have anything to complain. I was little doubt about ocean view, rough road, and green perspective prior to departure to Big Island, but I soon realized that I was silly-it was the best experience in my 30 years of numerous traveling. If you rent a 4WD, driving will be no problem and I actually enjoyed so much by feeling young when I drove off-road to this gorgeous place. Kate & Rick lives the model life that we always want so we asked lots of questions, and they were so kind to explain everything and even shared their fruits and veggies! We already want to go back and we will. We feel so thankful for everything in this place, happy honeymoon, and myself who chose this place :-)Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

Great owners, great view and great location. The guest house has all amenities, the scenery is amazing and well maintained. They provided beach towels, snorkel gear, beach chairs and umbrella if needed. The property is up on a steep hill so I would definitely recommend a 4WD vehicle. We only had a 2WD rental and were able to make it up the hill except when it rained. Overall, it was a great experience and the owners are so friendly and have great hospitality.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.
Owner response: We enjoyed hosting this energetic young couple on their first trip to Hawaii. Our location provided a great home-base for their beach explorations, snorkeling & hiking adventures. They were especially excited to see the whales so close off-shore.

The experience was exceptional due to the hospitality extended along with the very tranquil surroundings. This particular property offers its guests an opportunity to step outside of oridinary everyday life into a reflective sacred space that invites deep introspection and transformation. The ohana was extremely clean, well maintained and offered a more traditional aspect of old Hawaii. The owners were very gracious and caring of any needs presented. To conclude it was an experience that goes beyond words indeed!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway.

I stayed here for nine days, longer than I intended! That's how special this place is! Katey and Rick, the owners, are welcoming and excited for their guests to have an awesome experience. They were generous with their time in answering questions, providing suggestions and offering advice. The ohana is beautifully decorated, spacious and has lots of amenities. Everything a guest might need has been thought of and more. There are extras, too, including fresh fruit & vegetables from their amazing organic farm and an array of snorkeling equipment. My stay was far more than I ever dreamed. Thank you!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway.

A truly remarkable guest house. The grounds of the "ohana" are incredible...It was my imagined image of what Hawaii was to be. I told my daughters that is was like being on the Avatar set. The apartment is very comfortable with very high ceiling enhancing the spacious living area . We loved the "green" attitude of this environment. Our hosts, Kate and Rick, were amazingly gracious. I don't know if this rental is for everyone...it is a bit remote and the drive from the road to the rental is rather bumpy...but the road to paradise is not always smooth. It's worth the journey.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with young children.
Owner response: Iris & Richard were delightful guests who seemed to share our love and amazement of natures beauty. They travel with high-end camera equipment, and we happened to have emerging white pineapple 'keiki' and dragon fruit flowers 'in bloom' during their guesting time with us. It was great fun to share our slice of paradise with world travelers who were curious about growing and harvesting exotic tropical plants.

This is a very special place - easily felt the moment you come up the road and set eyes upon ths beautiful landscape. Our home away from home had everything we needed. Kate & Rick (our hosts) had thought of everything and I can't think of anything we lacked or needed. I've never been to anyones home where we were treated any better or the hosts were more gracious. We have enjoyed the facilities, their tips on where to go and what to see. We've stayed in numerous hotels, B&B's, and vacation rentals all over the world and have never felt as welcomed as we have at this Hale - we will come back for sure. They share their bounty from the gardens and greenhouses and we so appreciated the simple easy flow of life on this lush organic farm. You must sample the dragonfruit if you can - it's amazing! What a fantastic place to enjoy for a few days! The setting is exactly what I had hoped for - a bit remote and isolated yet close enough to beaches and town that gives you the best of both. Kona coffee on the lanai every morning, listening to birds, watching the sun come up, seeing the flowers unfold. The plants, flowers, landscape are beautiful - taking pictures of them all can be a photographers dream. Kate & Rick are so kind and welcome you into their special oasis. Truly a wonderful opportunity to be here. Thank you so much for everything! Until next time... GaryDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2003
About the owner: Our first visit to the Big Island was in 1997 when we joined friends for a one week ‘retreat’ at a vacation rental in Kealakekua Bay where we enjoyed the Island, the Bay and the lifestyle soooo much that within 3 months we relocated from California to Hawaii. Initially we bought a home within the Kailua-Kona township, but knew in our hearts that we wanted to be further south where we could have green-houses, plant orchards, enjoy gardens and learn to live a more eco-friendly life-style. In 2003 we began to realize our dream when we bought 16 acres of undeveloped land in the Kaohe area. By the Fall of 2005 we had a road, 2 producing green-houses, an almost livable home and the joy of knowing we were creating our idea of paradise and a healthier life-style. Now, several years of work later, our home and the Ohana are very comfortable, orchard trees are growing, and the gardens are looking tropical. We enjoy sharing our love for the Island and the land with friends, family and guest visitors.
Why the Owner Chose Captain Cook:
We love the beautiful, nourishing land, coastline views and sunsets in South Kona. Our location has rich soil for farming and growing ornamental plants; the climate is ideal for living comfortably year round; and we have wonderful neighbors who share a similar passion for the land and living a healthy lifestyle.
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
We offer a secluded and tranquil guest accommodation in our ‘Ohana’ away from busy nearby towns, yet conveniently accessible to locally available activities. The Ohana (apartment) is located in a separate building from the main house … on an organic 16 acre property that is very eco-friendly. Exotic and tropical fruit is available for viewing and enjoying throughout the farm. Upon request and when ‘in-season’… learn to pollinate vanilla orchids, harvest cacao pods and pick exotic tropical fruit like lychee, dragonfruit, loquat, papaya, figs and white pineapple. Fresh herbs are available from the gardens for food preparation.
