This place was a great find for the two of us: long-ish drive but striking distance from Boston, and remote enough that we felt like we really got away... What a beautiful cabin- well-stocked kitchen, plenty of games and reading materials, tasteful decor, and the views- stunning! We didn't fire up the internet once over 4 days. It snowed the day before we arrived and again during our stay- couldn't have asked for a prettier landscape. Hot chocolate and deliciously warm woodstove as we watched the evening grow dark over the frozen lake. Plenty of hiking, crosscountry skiing and snowmobiling (and moose!) nearby. The local caretaker is friendly and helpful if you need anything. Bring a passport if you want to cross into Canada, and plenty of food supplies as the nearest reliable stores are several miles away- though with few distractions, you'll be able to really enjoy cooking. We appreciated the quiet beauty of this little gem in the Northeast Kingdom.Recommended for: Girls getaway, romantic getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers.
Owner response: We are so happy you enjoyed your stay, and that the weather cooperated by serving up just the right amount of snow! Thank you for your kind words!

This was a wonderful vacation spot; we can't recommend it highly enough! It is the perfect couple's retreat -- plenty of privacy from other houses, comfortable furniture, lovely decor, and a breathtaking lake view from every room of the house (except the bathroom). (The house is open-plan, so there's little privacy in the house itself; choose your vacation companions with that in mind.) The house has a good, modern, spacious kitchen, and all in all it was extremely easy to settle in comfortably right away; we felt at home immediately and can't wait to return. The manager was extraordinarily helpful as well. The lake is beautiful in all weathers, and there's a wood stove that would make staying here in cooler months very cozy; apparently the fall colors are extraordinary. We were there in the summer and were amazed that, even on a summer weekend, the lake was quiet; when we went out kayaking (four kayaks included with the rental), it felt like we had the lake to ourselves. No photos can do the lake view justice, and we were fascinated to watch the light on the water change throughout the day. Clearly we loved it; we plan to return again and again!Recommended for: Romantic getaway.

This cabin/lake house is so amazing! We drove up from Boston and it wasn't too long a drive at all. It certainly was a scenic one; It was all just beautiful. As for the vacation property itself: the Canadian border, a hiking trail up Mt Averill, and a small grocery store are all well within walking distance from the house, which rests amongst a well-kept garden and beautiful landscaping, only steps from the water and small dock. The kayaks are in great condition (we tested them out thoroughly by paddling all the way across the pond and back); the grill works great; the view is incredible from every room in the house and the layout of the cabin is really interesting and optimal for privacy. I'd say that a couple or a smaller family would be ideal for the space and layout. We brought our Lab, and he had a great time too. The woman who takes care of the place is incredibly sweet and was very accommodating. We visited over the 4th of July weekend, which was great, because several of the other houses on the pond put on quite good fireworks shows on Saturday and Sunday night! Something to keep in mind: there is no television and (at least for us) no cell signal. This wasn't a problem at all for us, in fact we found it to really force us to slow down and relax; to really pay attention and enjoy our stay. There is an internet connection, which speed-wise is good but not great--so if you are looking to stay plugged in while you're away, this may not be the place for you. Bring a laptop and some movies in case it rains. Maybe your mp3 player and some satellite speakers as well, but if you forget, there are plenty of books to read, and we enjoyed playing cards and some board games, too. This place truly felt like a home away from home. I can't say enough about how pleasant everyone who we dealt with is for this place was, either. The owner, caretaker, neighbors, and the lady in the local store were all so nice. The kayaking is amazing, the pond/lake is quite large, and the hiking/biking opportunities are great. Do be careful and at least have a moderate level of comfort with hiking if you choose to hike the Mt Averill hiking path. The trail looks as though it hasn't been maintained over the past few years and it is somewhat overgrown in places. Also, the trail is sporadically marked at best. Still, it's worth the hike, as the trail ends at the top with a splendid view of the entire lake below. We definitely plan on staying again and highly recommend it to othersRecommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Thank you for this wonderful review! We strive to make your time in Averill a memorable experience. Thank you also for the tip about the slow Internet connection, as we will look into it right away. We will definitely provide some additional games and "indoor" entertainments. Thanks so much. We greatly appreciate your recommendations.

My wife and i stayed at this property recently for 3 nights. The cottage is very nice. The cottage was clean and well mantained. The view is fantastic. The location is great.Very private but not too secluded. My only gripe would be the lack of a television. The internet is satellite so is adequate as long as the weather is calm. The moose are plentiful in the area so use caution driving.I would recommend this rental.Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Thank you for this positive review! We agree with everything you say. As for the "lack of a television," let me offer this: we do not have a TV at the cabin/cottage because we use our computer to access streaming radio stations (for news); CDs for music (some downloaded, some not); and, for DVDs when we want to watch movies. We are open to additional input on this issue, however, so please let us know. Thanks!
