Property description

Some guests who visit Barbary House say it feels very secluded, quiet and relaxing. Others say that they never run out of things to do. Barbary House has the advantage of a secluded setting, but is located in a community with a lot of activities available.

There are tall trees all around the house which offer privacy and shade, although there's filtered sun all day. The house faces a nice, big deck that has built-in benches and counters, plus a classic charcoal grill. There's an outdoor dining table with 4 chairs plus a recliner and hammock. The deck is partly covered, and it wraps around 3 sides of the house, making a safe, dry play area for kids. The back yard is a fenced secret garden. The house is set back from the road by a forested green belt so you won't see anyone unless you want to go find someone.

The big dining room table will accommodate a feast, and offers enough room for a leisurely puzzle and a long game of Risk--at the same time even. The kitchen is fully equipped for preparing your own meals, and a charcoal grill is available for whatever seafood you picked up in Belfair or Shelton. Or if you don't want to cook there are restaurants as close as Spencer Lake or Allyn.

The master bedroom has a queen bed and a modest closet and dresser. It includes a private 3/4 bath and a private entry door. Each bedroom and bath includes its own thermostat and baseboard heater. The second bedroom has a California-bunk (i.e. a Twin on top of a Double,) a built-in desk, closet, and a TV with DVD player and VHS library.
Upstairs someone will discover a curtain-divided loft. One side has a Queen bed and the other side features a Trundle-style bed (1 Twin that slides under another Twin for storage.)

Hartstine Island is a very scenic island featuring miles of nice beaches and jagged scenic coves. There are two state parks on the island for your exploration, and on the mainland there are additional boat launches and parks. The island is located at the south end of Puget Sound, a salt water network of fjord-like passages and bays. There is abundant beach life, such as crabs, mussels and sand dollars, especially at low tide. Sea gulls and herons are common, and sometimes you can hear or see harbor seals in the water. There have been whale sightings as far south as Hartstine Island but they are rare. Bring your kayak, canoe or power boat. You can fish and dig shellfish on Puget Sound, within guidelines, and there are several lakes nearby for fresh water fishing. There are a couple of golf courses on the mainland, as well.

The neighborhood of Hartstene Pointe is located at the north end of Harstine Island. (I know, the spellings are oddly inconsistent.) Being a point, there are beaches on 3 sides of the neighborhood, which amount to more than 2 miles of nice walkable beach. There is a lagoon near the tip of the point, which has a boat launch, and is an ideal place to put in your canoe or kayak. There's a spit that protects the lagoon, which is driveable and has fire pits and benches. There are several picnic areas in the neighborhood, as well as miles of scenic walking trails.

Near the main gate is a club house available to guests. There's a pool with a hot tub (which is open Memorial Day weekend until mid-September.) In the club house there's a pool table, ping pong, video/book library, reading area and free Wi-Fi access. Across the street is a health and fitness facility. The neighborhood is gated, and has paved roads, which are great for biking or roller blading. (No motorized vehicles other than cars are allowed however--unless it's an electric golf cart.)

You can stay at Barbary House whether you are expecting utter relaxation and bliss, or whether you want to bring the boat and bikes and just keep active. Or maybe you want a little of both. You can have it your way here.

Hartstine Island is about 2 hours from Seattle, and 1 hour from Olympia. You can take the ferry from Seattle to the Olympic Peninsula and then drive onto Hartstine Island. Or you can drive the entire way, either through Olympia or across the Tacoma Narrows bridge.

Barbary House is located in the gated community called Hartstene Pointe. This means you'll have access to over 2 miles of shared Puget Sound beach, rich with marine life, plus two boat launches, picnic shelters, fire pits, a club house, swimming pool and fitness center. Hartstene Pointe neighbors pride themselves on keeping the neighborhood natural-looking, so everywhere you go there are trees and underbrush, including wild huckleberries. It does not have the overdeveloped feel of a lot of waterfront communities. There is a network of nature trails that take you into the trees, down into ravines or along breathtaking waterfront bluffs.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 2006

Why the Owner Chose Harstine Island:
I've always loved Puget sound, either on the beach or in a small sailboat. Hartstene Pointe is a very beautiful spot on Puget Sound, with views of Mount Rainier and of the Olympic Mountains.

The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
The beaches are mostly gravel but sandy in places, and feature a lot of sea life. There's a sand dollar nesting area not far from the house on the closest beach. I never knew that sand dollars are purple when they are young. Walking on the beach, or sailing a small craft is where I feel the closest to nature.
