Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2009

Mike is a professional cabinet and furniture maker. He built the entire cabin as if it were a cabinet and furnished the interior with his own work. Nancy is a calligrapher and artist, and her work adorns the inside of the cabin as well. Our house is five minutes from the cabin, so we are generally available to assist you in any way necessary.

Why the Owner Chose Lewisburg

Mike and Nancy have been dreaming of building a small cabin and sauna on this property since 1989. In 2005 Mike built the wood-fired sauna which now also houses the shower and toilet for the adjacent cabin, which was completed in the Spring of 2010. The property is ideally situated, minutes from the Bald Eagle State Forest in one direction and the historic town of Lewisburg, 15 minutes in the other direction.

The Unique Benefits of this Cabin

Listen to the quiet music of the creek, the soft song of the wind in the trees, the welcome interruptions of birds’ many calls. Smell the clean forest air, fragrant pines, pennyroyal or even skunk cabbage! Enjoy the rich mossy forest floor and cozy wood fires. Observe the play of light, constantly changing. Sun rises late to wake you in the loft bed, then sparkles on the water and projects surprise animations and shadows all around the cabin before setting over the deck. Your fresh meals grilled out on the deck or enjoyed inside wake up your taste buds. Perhaps you’ll try a wintergreen berry? Our pure clean well water is truly delicious. Wade in the shallow creek and dunk in the deeper pools. Play with clay from the banks, hug those trees, and touch the stones, bones and cones you will find. In Winter, fire-up the sauna and experience the refreshing feeling.

Wood Cliff Cabin: Retreat, Repose, Relax

WOW!!!

My Husband Steve and I celebrated our anniversary at the cabin. We are from the area, but when Nancy drove us back the stone road to the cabin it felt as if we were miles away. The cabin was perfect, and we enjoyed the special time together cooking and playing scrabble on the deck. We awoke in the morning to the sound of the run below us and the sun shining in the windows. It was a wonderful escape and we highly recommend it for a getaway together.

My boyfriend and I spent a lovely long weekend at the cabin. Michael and Nancy were so welcoming and the cabin was beautiful. We really enjoyed getting away from city living to relax in the woods. We went for a great hike along a ridge in the nearby state park and Michael and Nancy loaned us their Scrabble set to fill the quiet nights. It was a lovely place run by lovely people and we hope to return soon. Highly recommended!

Lewisburg's Best Kept Secret!

Just back from our second weekend at Wood Cliff Cabin. It is safe to say there will be many more visits in the future! I absolutely love the cabin! I could go on and on about why, but it truly is something you need to experience for yourself. The hosts, Michael and Nancy are warm and welcoming. Michael mapped out a great trail run for us prior to our arrival in a local state forest. The sauna was a treat to sore muscles after our run! The photos and listing details are accurate. You will have everything you need for a relaxing, quiet weekend in the woods.

We stayed at wood cliff cabin a few weeks ago and it was a great fall weekend. The cabin is beautiful and a work of art. It is the perfect place to get away from it all and relax. Mike and Nancy are both very friendly and accomodating. I would highly recommend it!

Well off the beaten path and a step back in time

The perfect romantic getaway for a Outdoorsman, a Painter, and their Austrailian Cattle Dog. The adventure begins as you load the Kubota. And what a unique way to travel to your hiding place in the woods. Robert Frost could have written for days here and we're so sorry we didn't stay one day longer. The first time you pour a gallon of ice cold water over your head after exiting the wood fired sauna, you'll never be the same. The most incredible part of your stay will be your awareness of man's impact on the environment and how much we over-consume. We live in a world where water and energy are wasted in epic proportions. Here you'll see a different way of making the simplest of pleasures so much more fun to create. Coffee tastes better when you boil your own water and use the French Press. Stand on the porch in your robe in the snow and have the best cup of your life. The cabin in inself is truely a work of art. More like 5-star camping. The loft bed has windows on two sides and if its a moonlit night, you'll see stars like never before. Hiking trails will lead you to a pristine stream as the base of the cliffside. The water clarity is amazing as there are virtually no human inhabitants upstream. Probably abundant with native trout. Great subject matter for Plein Air Painters. Staying here is very different than you anticipate. At first the idea of boiling water seems like such a chore, but after you get used to using the facilities, the place actually grows on you. The 12-volt electrical system is quite an engineering marvel. Modern, high tech, gas appliances, await even the most discerning of chefs. After your sauna, crack open a bottle of white, have some cheese, and nap the afternoon in total peace and quiet. The owners are accessible, but invisible during your stay. True artists with a passion for nature and the outdoors. If you are looking for a very different, yet total getway, this is the place. Turn off the cell phone, forget TV, and get with nature. We can't wait for our next stay.

Tranquil and Restorative Weekend Escape

Guest: JustNancy (Brooklyn, NY)
Date of Stay: 07/08/11 Review Submitted: 07/11/11

My husband, our dog and I were in need of a weekend getaway and found the Wood Cliff Cabin suited us perfectly! Light rain marked our arrival late Friday night. Mischa greeted us and drove us down a gravel path to the cabin. We fell asleep on the comfortable and cozy loft bed, lulled by raindrops gently tapping the leaves outside the windows. What a surprise it was to wake up in a stunning sun-dappled forest setting! The first thing we heard was the cheery stream below. The kitchen is elegantly minimal and perfectly curated to prepare everything you might need for your stay. As others noted, Wood Cliff Cabin isn't a "camping" experience. A Euro-sized refrigerator, stainless french press, perfectly seasoned cast iron skillet and elegant dishware made preparations for our first breakfast on the deck effortless and enjoyable. Our dog absolutely loved picking her way through the bubbling creek, chasing dragonflies and laying by our feet. My husband and I read seated on the Adirondack chairs thoughtfully placed by the owners along the side of creek. We also took a small drive into nearby Bald Eagle State Park. Not 5 miles in, we spotted a mother Black Bear with her cub! They ignored us and just seemed focused on making their way through the forest. Needless to say, we were in awe. All three of us were grateful for our stay at the cabin, which was a welcome break from the merciless summer heat and humidity of city living. We will return in the winter to try the sauna! Thank you, Mischa, Nancy & Zoe, for your hospitality and for making our stay exactly what we were looking for!

Like living in a little treehouse........

Guest: bonnie_HAC108293 (Central, PA)
Date of Stay: 05/07/11 Review Submitted: 05/19/11

My husband and I stayed @ Woodcliff Cottage for 3 nights, May 7-9th. We enjoyed the experience and would definitely like to stay again. Woodcliff Cottage is a small "artisan's" cottage, perched high on a small cliff overlooking Spruce Run creek. Every wood item in the cottage from the flooring to the window frames were made entirely by hand by Michael, who is a cabinetmaker by trade; the woodworking is exquisite. The cottage has been ingeniously designed to make the most of a small space and to minimize it's "carbon footprint" on society. Electrical energy is supplied by large batteries that Michael/Misha charges and stores under the cottage; the stove, refrigerator, and one of the internal light fixtures are run on propane. We had no problems charging small items (Verizon "MiFi" wireless internet antennae, MAC laptop, cellphones) on the provided Cobra invertor (converter appliance). We did receive a Verizon signal at the cottage, although a bit slower than usual, but we were not concerned with this. The cottage is nestled onto the edge of a small cliff, and is surrounded with windows and has a light, airy feel about it. When you awaken in the mornings you will be surrounded by tree limbs directly outside of your bedroom windows and there will likely be a chorus of birdsong. You really do feel like you are awakening in a treehouse for adults. There is a nice sized deck on the front of Woodcliff Cottage which literally overhangs the beginnings of the cliff, and at the bottom you can see and listen to Spruce Run babbling along like it probably has for centuries. The deck faces due west, and you may be treated to wonderful sunset through the trees. The cottage is very clean and beautifully decorated with artwork and window paintings (done by Nancy) and the entire experience is quite fun and interesting. The cottage has been thoughtfully and carefully "provisioned" with flashlights, propane and battery lanterns, extra blankets, cooking supplies/pans/utensils, etc., and the bed is very comfortable. If you are an adventurous spirit and do not mind a very short walk to a composting toilet and shower room that is housed in an adjacent building, do not mind boiling water in the cottage to wash your dishes, and are not dependent upon devices with high electrical demand (hair blowdryer, etc.) you will LOVE the quiet, solitude and romance of this place and the surrounding mountains. Highly recommended!

Refreshing!!!!!!!!

From being greeted by name by Nancy, given home grown produce for dinner to being wished goodbye on the morning of my departure, my whole experience at this cabin was absolutely wonderful. After finding out I planned to spend my time hiking the nearby state forest, Misha took the time to tell me some of his favorite hiking spots, which were beautiful. The cabin has everything you need for your time there, from cooking equipment, paper supplies, flashlights and lanterns, even extra food and water bowls for dog owners. Sit on the deck on the comfortable hand made rocking chair, enjoy the solitude and let the cares and worries wash away with the sound of the nearby stream. HIGHLY recommended. Thanks again Misha and Nancy!

Wonderful winter getaway

We had a wonderful time over the MLK holiday weekend in this cosy cabin with the amazing sauna. We managed to tear ourselves away from the cabin a few times and enjoyed exploring the restaurants, thrift stores, brew pubs and forest hikes during the day, before cosying up in the evenings. It is beautifully built, and very comfortable with the huge raised bed and wood-burning stove. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook breakfasts and dinners. We really appreciated having the radio and ipod dock. Thanks Misha for your hospitality!
