Trail Canyon Ranch is a 500 acre secluded property at the end of the road in Redrock country, tucked inside Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. The ranch is protected by a Conservation Easement in favor of wildlife and habitat. The land is characterized by slick rock, green pastures, huge Cottonwoods trees lining the creek, an outstanding waterfall, and endless hiking opportunities. For those interested in horticulture, there is a large tree nursery and many unique plantings around the ranch. Visiting Trail Canyon Ranch is like staying in your own national park.

The casita is the only guest house on the ranch. Built only a couple of years ago, it is southwest stucco in style with thick walls, tribal rugs and original art. The large wooden beams are from the ranch and the amenities include beautiful granite counter tops, a glass shower that looks out toward the slick rock cliffs, a rounded great room with an enormous Juniper tree support and southwest wooden beam ceiling. Beautiful Italian light fixtures accent this 1,000 square foot house which is energy efficient (constructed of Navajo flexcrete blocks) and solar heated with a wonderful Waterford cookstove for backup. There is a full size refrigerator and washer & dryer. The single bedroom has a queen bed and there is a queen-sized air bed that could accommodate another couple or single.

Cortez is a mere 15 minutes away with many restaurants and Canyons of the Ancient's Sand Canyon entrance is 5 miles down the road. Hovenweep National Monument, Ute Mountain Ute Tribal Park and Mesa Verde National Park are close.

Keywords: Beautiful casita, slick rock canyon, 500 acre ranch and dark skies!

Why the Owner Chose Cortez

We have lived in Southwest Colorado for over thirty years. We were drawn to the high mountains and Redrock canyons. There is such opportunity to explore and recreate in and around Cortez, Durango, Telluride and southeast Utah. It's spectacular country.

The Unique Benefits at this House

Trail Canyon Ranch is uniquely located within the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. It is at the end of the road and extends about 3 miles into the canyon. There are many rock features including standing rocks, delicately balanced rocks (Hoodoos)and slick rock. It is quiet from people and cars and the starry nights are gorgeous. There's nothing like a moonlit walk through the canyon.

Owner's Map of Cortez

David and Pati Temple are excited to share their beloved Trail Canyon Ranch. They are dedicated to wildlife and healthy habitat. David is a Board Certified Master Arborist and horticulturist. He grows a wide variety of large trees in his nursery, Trees of Trail Canyon. Pati's passion is horseback riding and training. The owners work toward the benefit of a nearby wild horse herd. Three mustangs reside on the ranch along with a Standardbred driving horse (Raven pulls a fine looking Studebaker carriage), a Paso Fino, a Rocky Mountain Horse, two burros and their dogs, Winston and Chancellor. Wildlife include golden eagles, redtail hawks, songbirds, Hummingbirds, Canada geese, mountain lion, muledeer, foxes, coyotes, ringtail cats, elk and an occasional black bear. Come experience Trail Canyon Ranch!

Aaaaaah

Trail Canyon is heavenly! The accommodations are luxurious without being ostentatiously so, and every detail is seen to. The hosts are friendly and helpful and available if you need them, but the privacy in the guesthouse is there to be enjoyed. We had great fun watching the mustang foal that had just been adopted romp around its special corral not far from us, and the flowers in the gardens were primo in mid October. One of the loveliest places we've ever stayed (wish we'd alloted more time for there: lots of interesting places to explore nearby). I heartily recommend October in Trail Canyon: perfect weather and the yellow Fremont cottonwoods are school bus orange against the azure, endless sky!

We chose this Inn because of the reviews it received. We weren’t disappointed. It turned out to be a great place. The hospitality and thoughtfulness of the owners can not be over rated. The casita was clean and beautiful (1000 sq ft.) but the photos don‘t do it justice. An interesting side note is that the rental property uses solar energy. You could use this rental for many reasons: a) writer’s block would disappear here b) Use as a base for Mesa Verde, Hovenweep, and River Rafting/ Hiking etc c) A really nice place to explore without ever leaving the property. We have teens (total outdoor kids) and they really enjoyed it but again, they are outdoor kids, not kids that need to be entertained but if you have kids that do need to be entertained electronically, they have wi-fi, a great record collection from the 60" & 70's, and satellite TV. If peace & quiet is what you desire at the end of the day maybe with a nice red wine & fire in the chimenia (outdoor fireplace) then this is the place for you. If it's this beautiful in late summer, I cannot imagine fall or spring. Wow! Before I finish the review I have to emphasize how really kind and genuine the hosts are. We felt so welcomed.

Kickback and Enjoy the Serenity

My husband and our 2 dogs stayed here for 3 nights and had a wonderful time. We did quite a bit of hiking and playing in the creek right there on the property. Amazing views right out the casita window and a quick walk or drive up Pati's & David's property rode. The Casita is fairly new, is nicely decorated and has all the amenities you need for a relaxing vacation. There is a winery right up the road and town is a quick drive. I can't say enough nice things about the hosts - David & Pati - they went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and really enjoyed visiting with the both of them. David's tree farm, their huge vegetable garden and the horses on their property were amazing. We would go back there in a heart beat.

Amazing

Too cool for words. Adobe sun-powered earthshipcasita butts up against slickrock (with a petroglyph outside shower window), cool mtn air wafts down valley at night, McElmo creek runs a rock toss away, friendly hardworking hosts, horses, donkeys (we took em for a stroll), waterfall trail on site, close to Hovenweep, Dolores River Canyon. There's a good gym in Cortez, mtn bike trails everywhere, and more than anything, quiet under the stars.

Wonderfully Serene

Date of Stay: 03/18/11 Review Submitted: 05/11/11

I live in nearby Durango, CO. Deciding to escape the snowfall for a few days, I made a reservation at Trail Canyon and headed over. I was surprised by how accurately the website described the experience and the landscape. It was so serene to sit in front of the fire, sipping wine and looking at the stars. The sky seemed so vast, with no other light to speak of. Hiking up the trail to the waterfall the next morning was delightful, as well as the hiking in nearby Sand Canyon. The hosts were very informative and friendly. They accomodated all of my needs. The facilities were clean, very innovative in design and comfortable to stay in. I would reccommend staying at Trail Canyon to anyone, even if you live nearby like myself. It felt like a mini vacation for me and I was relaxed when I returned to my home to begin shoveling the snow that had accumulated. It was a positively serene and pleasant experience.

We loved staying in stuch a beautifully designed home - watching horses gallop across a pasture at sunset - having wine in our own little courtyard tucked beneath the red rocks! This is over the top! We will definitely come back!

I stayed in the casita on this ranch and was totally enchanted! It is a unique, beautifully appointed one-bedroom house in a spectacular canyon. We thoroughly enjoyed watching the horses in the fields near the casita. The hosts were so friendly and accommodating, they made the stay comfortable for us and just a great experience. There is some of the most beautiful country in Colorado on this ranch, and exploring the surrounding attractions was convenient and easy -- everything from hiking in Sand Canyon to touring Mesa Verde is readily accessible. I can't even say enough to convey our enjoyment of our experience!
