Laguna de Apoyo house description
There’s no need for a pool with the healing waters of the Laguna de Apoyo in your front yard.
To stay at Quinta Lee is to experience the richness of nature and the feel of Nicaragua.
Nicaragua's weather invites outdoor living. The open aired living space and and large covered terrace make this home a unique getaway. The beachfront patio will allow you to relax and dine in the shade as you take in the view of Volcan Mombacho. You can enjoy a hammock and nap to your heart’s content, or simply step into the warm waters of the Laguna for a swim. This beautiful paradise is surrounded by the lush Laguna de Apoyo Ecological Reserve. Don’t be surprised to hear the roar of a howler monkey or the sweet singing of a mot-mot.
This 4 bedroom and 5.5 bathroom home is made up of two separate buildings, both facing the pristine waters of the Laguna. Quinta Lee is constructed with local hardwoods and the locally hand made furniture gives it a true Nicaraguan flavour. The spacious main house has a fully equipped kitchen which looks upon the huge palm roof patio. This open concept kitchen is decorated with hand painted tiles, hardwood cabinets, and a large rustic wooden island. There is an outdoor barbecue, two dining areas, powder room, and a bedroom with private bath, all of which are equipped with fans to keep you cool and comfortable.
In the second house there are three bright bedrooms each with private tiled baths. All of the bedrooms have air conditioning and ceiling fans. The front two rooms open onto the stunning front garden and Laguna, and the rear room opens onto the back garden.
The well tended gardens are bursting with bouganvilla, gardenia and hibiscus flowers. Palm trees sway in the breeze, dappling the shade over the lake front patio. The large back yard is complete with organic mango, papaya, lime, orange and banana trees along with a small herb garden.
Everyone who stays at Quinta Lee falls in love with Wilmer & Estella, our delightful caretakers. Spanish speaking, they have a vast knowledge of the area and Nicaraguan culture. They are willing and very happy to help with anything you need. Wilmer and Estella live in their home at the rear of the property, out of sight of the main house. They are always close at hand, and always respectful of our guests’ privacy.
The Laguna de Apoyo is a perfect jumping off point for all sorts of activities. Granada is only a 25 minute drive away so it is easy to head into town for some fine dining or market shopping. Alternatively, there are some lovely local restaurants that surround the Laguna, or simply ask Estela to cook you up one of her deliciously authentic Nicaraguan meals.
You can also take a day trip to the Pacific coastal beaches, which are a 2-3 hour drive from the Laguna, go for nature walks up the Mombacho Volcano, or rent kayaks to explore the Laguna.
A note to the wise... as in much of Nicaragua, the last half km of road into Quinta Lee is a bit rough. Although a normal car is sufficient (a taxi will take you there), we prefer a 4WD vehicle.

Great Family Getaway
Great Family Getaway
Beautiful and relaxing! The landscaping was outstanding and the caretakers were wonderful. Our family was able to enjoy the beauty of the scenery and the gorgeous views of the volcano and the lake. The road to Quinta Lee was being worked on when we arrived, and was very hard to get to the property, but on the way home it was improved. We would recommend this beautiful getaway highly.

A sight to behold!!
A sight to behold!!
We recently relocated from the USA to Nicaragua and could not wait for our first visitors from there to 'show-off' the country that we've decided to call home. When we found Quinta Lee on VRBO, we thought it would be a good excursion as part of the tour of the country. The only regret now, is that we didn't spend more time there!!! We were only there for a short time; nevertheless, Wilmer greeted us upon arrival with a cooler of cold ice, and the keys, and made sure that we were acclimated to the beautiful property. This was on the first day out of Managua for our first-time visiting friend and we ALL fell in love with the laguna and the house. Being that it was early June.....some of the hotter time of the year, the AC in the bedrooms was a welcomed amenity. We enjoyed the multi-terraces, the pristine laguna, and I even swam out to the dock.......which at my weight/age is a feat ;) All in all, I can not wait to return to Quinta Lee and to show all of our visiting friends/family and even our Managuan/Matagalpan-based family the treasure. Thank you for sharing your amazing property with us. We look forward to many happy returns. Thor, Connie, and Gustavo.

My family of 4 (Kids ages 12 and 10) stayed for 4 nights at Quintalee and had a great time. The house is fabulous, with an incredible view of Laguna de Apoyo and the volcano. We spent our days swimming and relaxing. Made a few trips to the restaurants and enjoyed cooking at the house and eating in the open air. We hope to be back soon....No problems at all with the rental, everything was as explained and worked out great.

A wonderful mixture of rustic and luxurious
A wonderful mixture of rustic and luxurious
My husband, 9-year-old daughter, and I spent a week here in April, and very much loved our time. It is at least as beautiful as the photos, and quite comfortable. Pros: The lake is very warm, the veranda a magical place to spend time, the garden fragrant and beautiful, and the spaces for spending time varied and numerous. The kitchen is good, the fridge incredible, and the available amenities are excellent. We saw phenomenal bird life on the property and along the road, and howler monkeys in the trees behind the house. Excellent place for twitchers to stay. There is A/C in the bedroom if you just can't handle the high-90s heat (but go easy on it; it's expensive for the owners). The caretaker, Wilmer, was welcoming and very helpful, as was the owner Lee. Cons: The road to the house is very, very rough, and uncomfortable to drive. The house is remote enough that this was an annoyance, although the paved section of the road was being extended towards the house while we were there. The wall facing the lake is only a metal grate, and we did have animal visitors squeeze through during the night, which we had to chase off. The winds on the lake can be very high, making swimming a touch hairy at times; we put our daughter in a PFD usually even though she is a very strong swimmer as we live on a lake. The wifi and electricity are intermittent, not surprisingly. Advice: Rent a 4WD, buy groceries in Managua before coming to the house, keep all your food in the fridge (even cereal) to avoid bug infestations. We kept our sunblock in the fridge so it was cooool when we put it on. Nice! Don't plan to cook much. It's too hot for eating. But have a nice selection of cool drinks, a pile of good books, and no agenda. Bring binoculars. Study some Spanish before coming here, so you can get by more easily and politely. This isn't a great place if you want to go, go, go. But if you want to relax, swim, read, it's perfect. Stay here. We really loved it.

Owner response: Thanks for your detailed comments and great suggestions! At this time we, and some neighbours have organized paving the bumpy part of our shared road.
This is my personal paradise. If you cant relax at Quinta Lee.....you never will. This place is the best place I ever vacationed hands down. We plan on making it regular vacation spot. Wilmer and Estella were so amazing. Her breakfast was AMAZING!! We will be sure to have her cook us breakfast and dinner next time. If your traveling with a few different couples or familys this place is perfect. Very private and everyone can have there own space and place to have a private conversation. I hope my daughter learns to swim in the crystal clear waters in front of this lava sand beach. Cant say enough good things about this place.

Owner response: Wow! Such kind words. We look forward to your next visit!
We had high expectations of Quintalee based on the VRBO posting and past reviews, and we were NOT disappointed! The setting within the volcanic crater lake was magical, and the serenity of the house was perfect. Our view from the house was through the beautiful garden (which was the pride of the caretaker - Wilmer), down to the clear water and across to the lush vegetation on the opposite rim of the crater, with blue skies and the Mombacho volcano as a backdrop. A view that you could never get tired of waking up too. The house had plenty of variety for seating areas, both covered and exposed to the elements. The bedrooms and washrooms were comfortable, private and very clean, thanks to the hard work of Wilmer's wife Estella. The kitchen was well equipped, and there was books and games to entertain, and very good Wifi if you needy it. It was great not having a TV for a week, as this place requires you to have a mind set that you are there to relax and enoy exploring Nicaragua. The last 500 meters of the road are rough, but we accomplished it in a compact car. Basic Spanish in Nicaragua and in the areas near the Laguna is helpful, but you can get by with a translation dictionary, or even better some form of e-translator on a smartphone or laptop (we used Google-translator when around the house for the more challenging questions). If you are planning to cook at the house, a trip with Wilmer to the Masaya food market is worth it, and the Masaya grocery stores at adequately stocked, but you need to have Estella make at least one meal, as she is a fabulous cook. We would definitely recommend it to those looking for an escape from conventional travel to hotels or resorts. We loved our week at Quintalee and look forward to a return trip in the future.

A rare find
A rare find
Nicaragua is an incredibly beautiful and impoverished country. The house and grounds at Quinta Lee are fabulous: flowers abound, the outdoor kitchen has every convenience, and the bedrooms are roomy, well furnished, comfortable and practically outfitted with mosquito nets and air conditioners (neither of which were needed at this time of year)/ After having visited in the north for two days, Quinta Lee seemed unbelievably luxurious. The waters of Laguna Apoyo were perfect for swimming and it was delightful to dive in at night after a day of sightseeing and see the stars appear. The house is conveniently located between Maseya, Granada, and touristic sites like the Maseya Volcano. Day trips to the pueblos blancos were also easy (my favoirte was San Juan de Oriente--my five dollar ceramic rooster is already perched in my entrance way). The house keepers were very accomodating and I think it was the perfect time of year to visit. Purisima, a celebration unique to Nicaragua, was in full swing. There are three things for travelers to keep in mind--and these are not criticisms just a word to the wise. First, it is almost necessary to have some Spanish speaker with you. We all spoke foreign languages other than Spanish and could fumble around the vocabulary and grammar but without our friend who lives there and is becoming fluent in SpanishI think it would have been a lot more frustrating. Second, the road going into Quinta Lee past Abuela's is worse than you can imagine. Avoid arriving at night and just be patient and rent a four wheel drive vehicle. Third, remember this is a poor country and you have to be flexible about expectations regarding timing, available groceries, and your own conspicuousness. There were seven women over 60 in our group so when people mistook us for nuns we went along with it....

Owner response: And we love it when you come!
My fiancee and I rented the amazing Quinta Lee for a quick escape from the real world, and it was amazing. The only negative was that we had to leave. The description is accurate and the owner was very helpful before our arrival. Once we arrived, the on site caretakers were incredibly helpful, nice, and caring, and they make great good to boot! I could easily spend multiple weeks relaxing by Laguna de Apoyo at Quinta Lee. The views are gorgeous, especially when the sky cleared up enough to see the top of Mombacho, and the water is warm and refreshing. This is a beautiful house in a beautiful location. I would highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Central America.

Owner response: Thank you for your kind words! Next time you come I hope you will have time for a trip to the top of volcan Mombacho. Those clouds at the top create a cool tropical jungle with orchids, bromeliads and so many butterflies. Well worth the visit. Hope to have you as guests again in the future.

Home away from home
My husband, his Nicaraguan family and I had a fabulous time at Quinta Lee. The food cooked by Estella was authentic and excellent. We spent two days swimming in the warm water of the Laguna, relaxing in the hammock and making unforgettable memories. The housekeeper Wilmer, although recovering from a recent injury, did everything he could to make us feel at home and made sure we had everything we needed to enjoy our stay. The house had all the commodities of an American home, to include warm showers and air conditioning. The location was perfect...close to Masaya, where you can find one of the country's many volcanoes and one of the best markets to purchase gorgeous Nicaraguan pottery/souvenirs. We will definitely be back to make more memories one day. Gracias por todo Estella y Wilmer, ojala que nos volvamos a ver algún día.

Year Purchased: 2005
About the owner: We are a family from Vancouver, Canada who fell in love with Nicaragua in 2005. We were fortunate to have found our property with one of the buildings having been recently constructed. We completely rebuilt the main house and have loved every minute of adding to our beautiful Quinta Lee
Why the Owner Chose Laguna de Apoyo:
We knew that the Laguna was the place for us after our first visit. It is located in the crater of an ancient volcano. The word Apoyo in Spanish means ‘support’. It’s meaning is clear as it is integral to the survival of the multitude of different species of plants and animals that thrive in and around it. The Laguna is an irresistible natural gem, unmatched in its beauty and serenity. With the breezes and the pristine warm water, that is ideal for swimming, we could not resist making the Laguna our home away from home.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The location is unbeatable, placing you close to the amenities of city life yet retaining the tranquility and peacefulness of a private beach get away. The open concept design is perfect for gatherings of family and friends. The daily maid service and 24 hour guard creates a safe and comfortable environment in which to fully enjoy your holiday. There truly is no other home in Nicaragua that captures the beauty and essence of this unbelievable country in such a relaxing and comfortable manner.
