Off the beaten path treat

Our stay at Eden Cottage was our best beach vacation ever. Very simple accomodations but everything our family of 4 needed. It's about a 30 minute drive away from Freeport so we were able to escape the typical tourist environment and experience the wonderful Bahamian people and how they live. Everyone we met in the settlement was friendly and helpful. We were able to do some excellent snorkelling right off the beach which we had to ourselves most of the time. You should expect to have to drive to town for provisions and laundry. There is a convenience store a few miles down the road for emergency items but we did most of our shopping in Freeport. Also, we did find it necessary, even in April, to turn on the air-conditioning for the comfort of our children who stayed in the upstairs bedroom which got very warm in the late afternoon and evening. Julia, the owner's daughter-in-law was an excellent source of help when we arrived and helped us with grocery shopping and navigating our way to the cottage. We would readily stay again at Eden Cottage.

Friendly!

This is the perfect place if you are looking for an isolated place in the middle of nowhere! The island is beutiful and the people are very friendly. We rent this house for a week this summer, and it was quite of a chock the first day. The house was extremly hot, and it took about a day and a night before we could feel the air-condition. One more thing that was chocking was the isolated situation. There is a restaurant down the way (maybe 500 m away), but that´s all! But the neighbours are very friendly and you never ever feel afraid there. About 20 m away is the beach, with lovely water and white sand. No one can complain about that, even if you cannot snorkle and see fishes from here. You have to go to an other beach (for example Paradise Cove) to get THAT snorkeling. The beach is also perfect for children! The owner and her assistent are just lovely, they help you with everything that you can imagine! The cottage is not modern, you get the feeling of old colonial style. The fans and the air-condition makes a LOT of noise, but you will like them! The best part of the house is the porch, it´s lovely to sit there and watch and listen to the sea. It takes about half an hour to get to the capital by car, where you have to buy your food. The road to town is quite boring, but you pass the Lucayan park, and that´s a good place to visit. Bring your swim suit. Finally, the Grand Bahama is a nice island to visit (rent a car), a perfect place for relaxing, swimming, snorkelling. The Eden cottage is a lovely, but isolated place. You come closer to the people, you don´t feel like a tourist and you can swim as much as you can. If you´re hungry, there is a restaurant with friendly staff and nice food (Doris). But if you´re looking for wild night life, big party and a lot of people, choose another place!

Spectacular place! Great people & location!

My wife and I stayed at Eden Cottage the week of July 12, 2010. We are not resort people and were looking for exactly the kind of isolation and facilities offered there. I must say in almost every respect, the stay exceeded our expectations! The location is spectacular. Very isolated from the craziness of the tourist centers with a great beach, excellent snorkling on 10 foot deep patch reefs right off shore and just west of the cottage and, with a rental car, convienent to Lucaya National Park, Mclean Town on East End and bonefish flats available in several spots. the main highways are paved and once you get used to driving on the right side of the road a pleasure to drive on. The Millers (we never got to meet Sandra as she was on another island while we were there) and the members of the High rock community could not have been more helpful, friendly and easy to talk to. Great people! The cottage is very well equipped. I would suggest that you contact the owner and have them turn the air conditioning on before you arrive if you are going to be there in the summer and if you are going to use it. Bring lots to read as there is no internet service and the TV reception while we were there was having problems (probably fixed by now.) Bring Deep Woods Off or something similar in the summer to deal with the horse flies on the beach. There were no mosquitoes though. We came over on the Discovery Sun cruise boat and brought a lot of our food but heard nothing but rave reviews for Doris' and the Bishops' restaurants right down the road. The nearest store is about 5 miles east of High Rock (the community where Eden Cottage is located.) Suffice to say that if you are looking for the ultimate in isolated, relaxing, friendly, interesting and inexpensive vactioning, Eden Cottage rules!

An absolutely PERFECT getaway!

Eden Cottage is an absolutely perfect little getaway. It's located about 30 minutes outside of Freeport/Port Lucaya and it's incredibly easy to get in and out of town. It sits just across a private street and has it's own personal path down to the beach. You share the beach with NO ONE. It is absolutely perfect. The water is gorgeous and the neighbors are friendly. Everyone watches out for everyone else. There are two local restaurants/bars located about 1/4 mile down the street. It's the place where the locals go to hang out at on the weekends to get away from the crowds in town. The food is AMAZING! The cottage is small, but fit 2 couples wonderfully. It was a challenge to share 1 bathroom, but if you're close with each other, it shouldn't be a problem. The house is extremely comfortable and Sandra and her daughter-in-law, Julia, were very welcoming and helped make our stay at Eden Cottage absolutely wonderful. If you're looking for the perfect place to get away from the big crowds of the cruisers and feel comfortable driving on the left hand side of the road, I say go for it and rent this cottage! We rented a car and drove all over the island. Staying at Eden Cottage made our vacation absolutely perfect because we wanted to get away from the crowds and explore the local side of the bahamian culture. A few of the activities that we did while staying on the island include: the Jeep Tour (5 hrs. of off-roading and picnicking at Gold Rock Beach, #5 most gorgeous beach on planet), snorkel trip, Lucayan National Forest, Port Lucaya Marketplace, UNEXSO Dolphin Swim, UNEXSO Beginner Dive, and we rented scooters to visit various beaches around the Port Lucaya area for a couple hours. We got everything we had hoped for and more for our stay in the Bahamas and we will definitely be returning to Eden Cottage some time in the future! Thank you!
