Unit D-3 at the Kona Reef is an absolutely oceanfront, recently-renovated, fully furnished, non-smoking, one bedroom condo with a complete kitchen. The lanai (patio) is located only 30 feet from the ocean. There is terrific tide pooling and exploring in the lava rocks. And if it's sand you want, you need to walk only a few hundred feet to the sandy park next to the condo complex (ocean swimming at the park is for experienced swimmers only.)
This fully furnished condo provides a wonderful place to just sit and relax. From your lanai, watch the surfers during the day and the sunsets at night. You'll also see jet boats, parasailing, and huge cruise ships. During the winter months. you may see whales passing by and it's not unusual to see schools of dolphins. Large turtles are permanent residents in the tide pool area and shoreline.
The Kona Reef is a low-rise oceanfront condo complex located close to the center of Kona. While away from the center of activity, it's an easy 2 block walk from the condo, along the waterfront to shopping and restaurants. Fresh produce, flowers, and macadamia nuts are available at the nearby farmers' market. The Kona Airport is about 7 miles away. Kahalu'u Beach Park, one of the best snorkeling areas in Hawaii, is just a few miles from the condo.
A large oceanfront pool, Jacuzzi, and chaise lounge area makes the Kona Reef a relaxing place to stay. Four gas-fired barbecues provide a great place to cook dinner, which you can eat at the tables and chairs in the barbecue area or take back to your private lanai.
Our condo is fully furnished and stocked with our guests in mind. The bedroom has a comfortable queen-sized bed, tropical furnishings, extra linens, plenty of storage, a TV, and a ceiling fan. The bathroom was recently renovated and has a glass block walk-in shower. We provide plenty of extra-large bath towels. The kitchen has a refrigerator with icemaker, an electric stove, dishwasher and microwave, plenty of cookware (for barbecue or stove), and dishware/silverware for 8. It also has a coffee grinder, a rice cooker, and a blender, as well as a toaster. You'll find most condiments as well as supplies such as paper towels, aluminum foil, etc. The living room has comfortable furnishings, including a 8' thick foam futon double-bed mattress. There's a large TV with VCR and DVD player. A cabinet contains an extensive collection of books, games, puzzles, movies, and DVDs. there's also a stereo with MP3 connector and CD player. Another cabinet contains coolers, beach chairs, beach towels, a boogie board, and other toys for water play. A sliding glass door covers the full width and height of one wall of the living room. And directly outside that door is the private lanai and the ocean.
Our guests have been delighted with the condo and we think you will be too.
NOTE: If our condo is already booked for the dates you're interested in or you prefer to be on an upper floor, please check out our VRBO listing 359614. We've recently bought Kona Reef D-24, on the 3rd floor of the same ocean front building.

My husband and I had a wonderful time at this condo for our 4 year anniversary. The walk to town was perfect especially when we ate too much and needed to work some of it off on the walk back. This is the perfect location to town and the sound of the waves put us to sleep every night. The weather was perfect and we never needed the air conditioner. Working with Jan was a breeze. We can't wait for another anniversary trip to come back and visit. Will definitely come back to this condo when we're on the Big Island.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Wonderful Condo! Everything was perfect - and we could not have asked for anything more. It is an easy & safe walk to town, clean & quiet low rise complex, condo had all the comforts of home -- and then some! The condo's description & photos are accurate. Very well stocked kitchen, and all linens are new & clean. We used the well maintained BBQ's a few times as well. Favorite activity (besides relaxing on the lanai) was the Evening Manta Ray Snorkel w/Splashers (this is a Must-Do trip!!) and 4WD'ing to some local beaches. Walked to and ate at Humpy's, Lulu's and Bongo Bob's a number of times during our stay. Buns in the Sun was a good b'fast and lunch spot too, just had to hop in the car to get there. Owner, Jan, was very helpful & we appreciate her opening her condo to us. We'd come back to D-3 without a second thought & would recommend it to anyone. We loved every minute.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.
Owner response: So glad you had such a great trip. We also enjoyed the Splashers Evening Manta Ray Snorkel trip when we did it recently. Please come back soon again! Jan Zobel, owner Kona Reef D-3

Our stay was fantastic! We enjoyed everything from the view on the lanai to the location which is close enough to town to walk in for dinner but far enough away that you only heard birds singing and waves crashing. The condo is very comfortable and everything we needed was right there - right down to a cooler to take water with us when we were out adventuring. The condo and facilities are very clean and quiet. I have to admit that we didn't use the kitchen as much as we thought we would but everytime we looked for something, like a cheese grater, we found it. We really appreciated the little touches like the "snorkelling" book and the file full of "things to do" - even though we had a good idea of what we wanted to do while we were there these things helped us decide on the must "do" activities. The contact with Jan was fabulous - we really felt welcome. We definitely plan to return to Hawaii and enjoy D-3 again!Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, romantic getaway.

What an absolutely fabulous location. We enjoyed the walk into town but we especially enjoyed the activities out front. Surf was "up" so there were lots of surfers. Also enjoyed watching the Ironman trainers. The condo was so very well equiped...even with Hawaiian art. What a nice touch.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Having made the really 20 hour trip from the UK to the Big Island we couldn't have wished for a more enjoyable, exciting, fun, and silly 2 weeks. The condo has been everything I expected with everything that has been needed. I particularly loved falling asleep to the sound of the waves and waking to see them.Did you find this review helpful? Loved the condo, location and area. Just a few notes: the blind on the sliding glass door was broke so we had to physically stand on a chair to raise/lower it and it only lowered half way (part was on order, we were there 10 days and it had not been repaired when we left) The bed was older and saggy, needs to be updated. Otherwise it is a great place and would recommend the facility to others, maybe not that unit unless these problems were corrected.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+.
Owner response: Thanks for the feedback. New mattress on the way! And I just talked to the maintenance man who has gotten the new chain needed to fix the blind; repair parts are not as available on the island as they are on the mainland so it takes a bit longer for things to get fixed. Hopefully the wonderful aspects of our condo will lure you back the next time you come to Kona!

This unit is nicely renovated and the oceanfront view is spectacular. The unit could use a new bed as we found it sagged towards the middle and was not very comfortable. Also, a few more beach towels would be nice as there was only 1 adult and 1 child towel available. Otherwise the unit is well supplied, clean and comfortable. The pool and barbecue area are recently updated and well maintained, great for sunset barbecue dinners ! The view from the lanai is awesome, whales, dolphins, sunsets, etc.. The complex is a short walk into town for restaurants and shopping which is very handy. Thanks for the nice stay !Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with young children.
Owner response: Thank you, Ken, for the helpful feedback. We're replacing the mattress right now. We're also talking with our housekeepers about the beach towel situation. We've provided plenty of them but sometimes they get mixed in with the extra bath towels (under the sink in the bathroom) rather than being in the cupboard where they belong. Hopefully the housekeepers will do a better job of putting the beach towels where they go.

We had a wonderful stay in the condo. Jan thought of absolutely everything and it was well equipped with nice Hawaiian touches. Jan was the perfect owner - who answered every question and couldn't of been more helpful. She was wonderful. The condo was only metres from the ocean and the lanai was excellent. You could watch the boogie boarders and surfers not to mention the dolphins, traditional boats and parasailers go by was great. The small white sandy beach next door was cute, relatively secluded and with tons of turtles around and beautiful yellow tangs (fish) if you wanted to stay close-by. The only negative thing was that the condo was a bit dusty and I don't think the cleaning team did their job that day, and the bed was a little soft and perhaps needs replacing in the future but these are small things! Despite this, I would definitely recommend this condo to friends and family. It was a very comfortable stay. I would definitely recommend hiring a car/jeep and travel around the island - there are so many wonderful beaches, snorkelling areas, crazy 4WD tracks and the island is fantastic with every changing scenery. You must do the night manta ray dive, swim with turtles, take a heli flight over the active volcano, go up north and discover some beautiful beaches, walk around age old lava, visit the volcanoes national park, mauna kea summit, discover the history of the island and visit the hilo side with its waterfalls and jurassic park type valleys. We had a wonderful 2 week holiday and would definitely recommend the stay at this condo. Thanks for an unforgettable holiday.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, romantic getaway.

Kona Reef was the perfect and impeccably clean place we were hoping for. We walked to town 2 or 3 times a day, took us about 5 minutes. Everyone is so friendly. The condo was well maintained and clean. The mattress in the bedroom is on the extreme firm side and the futon is not any better, so sleep was alittle challenging for us. Overall we had a really nice time laying by the pool, playing in the ocean and eating at great places. We will return to Kona next year for sure.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, tourists without a car, age 55+, romantic getaway.
Owner response: We're glad you enjoyed our condo and the Kona Reef and it's good to know that the housekeepers are continuing to keep everything clean and well-maintained. We are sorry, however, to hear that the mattress seemed so firm. That's actually the first time we've had a guest say that and we haven't experienced that in the many times we've stayed in our condo. Hopefully that will seem like a plus to people who are upset when they find hotels and condos with sagging mattresses or beds that are too-soft! Potential future guests -- if you have any questions about the furnishings or our condo, please don't hesitate to ask me. Mahalo, Jan Zobel Owner, Kona Reef D-3

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2004
About the owner: We bought this condo in 2004 after renting it from the previous owner for our Kona vacations for a number of years. We live in the San Francisco Bay Area and try to come for long visits to our condo a couple of times a year. While there, we usually buy some new furnishings or make some other improvement in the condo as we want our guests to enjoy the space as much as we do. We remember what it was like to rent someone else's condo for our vacation and we try to make sure that all the little things (i.e. kitchen condiments, beach chairs, coolers, etc.) are available for our guests. We also never forget that a trip to Hawaii is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many of our guests and we want them to be thrilled with the condo they've selected.
Why the Owner Chose Kona Reef:
After visiting each of the Hawaiian Islands, we found that we enjoyed the Big Island the most. The variety of scenery throughout the Island is amazing and we still love to travel over to Hilo side or to the volcano or north to the beautiful beaches in the Waikaloa area. But we were especially drawn to Kona because of the sunny weather and all the ocean activities. We love to snorkel and swim and we've also done some kayaking in the area.
The Unique Benefits at this Condo:
Despite the many visits to our condo (including the times we stayed there before we bought it), we still are amazed when we arrive and open the living room shades and find the ocean right outside. We don't feel like we have to do much to have a true vacation at our condo; just relaxing on the lanai or by the pool is vacation enough. One of the reasons we wanted to buy at the Kona Reef is because it's so close to the activity of downtown Kona without being in the middle of the noise. As we're walking the 2-3 blocks downtown, we see the traffic and people having trouble parking and are so glad we don't have to drive and park, which most visitors to Kona have to do. Another thing we like about the Kona Reef is that we've found the other condo owners and the guests to be especially friendly so we enjoy the general atmosphere. And the condo association is constantly making improvements to the complex so we always feel that everything is being well-maintained.
