Charles and Henry Greene, the preeminent architects of the Arts and Crafts Movement, designed the Pratt House for Charles and Mary Pratt in 1909. The house, a perfect fusion of Japanese aesthetic and American practicality, sits on a ridgeline overlooking the valley of idyllic Ojai, California. The Greene and Greene architectural plans refer to the project as "The Pratt House" however the Pratts named their home and estate "Casa Barranca” referring to the seasonal river bed running through the property.
Noted as one of the Greenes' five "ultimate bungalows," the Pratt House embraces the Arts and Crafts ideal by creating an open and elegant living space without resorting to excessive decorative detail. Comprised of two wings unified by a central living room/entrance way, the house boasts five large bedrooms, six fireplaces, four bathrooms, three sleeping porches, an eat-in kitchen, a formal dining room, and front, rear and upper patios.
Architectural Digest notes that in the grace of the Pratt House "...the sun translates the Greenes' structural poetry into ever-shifting patterns of light against polished wood. At night... the silhouette of live oaks is framed against the Milky way. A closer approximation to Shangri-La is hard to imagine."
Today, in keeping with the humble and pure ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement, the Pratt House and it's estate are powered by solar electricity, draw their water from artesian springs and are surrounded by an organic vineyard and gardens which are farmed on sustainable, permaculture principles.

I spent a weekend here, teaching a Yoga retreat with sixteen students. From the moment I checked in, it was like I had arrived on a private Island. When I was introduced to the main house I was in awe of the beauty and cleanliness. Each bedroom offered it's own unique personality and life. The main room was inspiring, rustic and very well kept and dressed. We went swimming and hung out in the jacuzzi, which was very clean. If you like to cook then you better be serious because the kitchen is equipped with all the necessary tools to make whatever your taste buds desire. The only hick-up was the wine tasting was to quick. So if you want to enjoy serenity, scenery and infuse your body and mind with good vibes. I highly recommend this place.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.

Our stay at Casa Barranca will go in the top 5 experiences of my life (along with sailing in Bora Bora, flying a small plane across the country and turning 50 at the Post Ranch Inn). It's a spectacular property, maintained meticulously with amazing attention to detail; we were so lucky to have spent time there. Walking on the driveway as the morning mist dripped through the oaks and covered the vines was something I'll never forget. And sweet Rocco kept me company!Recommended for: Girls getaway, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Fantastic! It was a pleasure having your family.

About the owner: Hi, we are the owners of Casa Barranca. This home is the culmination of nearly 20 years of love, passion and dedication. On site we have walkways leading through orchards, a vineyard, herb, vegetable, flower and succulent gardens. We want people to come and enjoy the beauty of the home and grounds to relax, rest and renew. We have three sons who love to tend the land and pick the fruit when it is ripe. Adjacent to the home is a winery where we make wine in the summertime. Upon your arrival, we invite you to enjoy a bottle of our wine that is made here. We wish you a beautiful stay with us!
