Alaska Birch Cottages are tucked away in a quiet cul-de-sac midway between Palmer and Wasilla in the heart of the Matanuska-Susitna Valley in South-Central Alaska. The cottage is tastefully appointed and has a full kitchen, wood and slate floors, in-floor heating, gas fireplace, jetted tub, washer and dryer, cable TV and a screened porch. There are many lakes in the area, rivers for fishing, rafting and kayaking, and the Talkeetna Mountains with a restored gold mine at Independence Mine and trails for day hikes offering fresh air and fantastic views. Matanuska Glacier is also worth a day trip for a hike on the glacier.
Wasilla is the home of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race Headquarters/Museum, and dog farms are open for tours in the Big Lake and Willow areas. Close to Palmer are the Musk Ox and Reindeer Farms. Talkeetna is a good hour's drive to the north. This small community comes alive in April-June with mountaineers from all over the world arriving to attempt to conquer Denali, the local name for Mount McKinley, North America's highest peak.
Consider Alaska Birch Cottages your home away from home, or as base camp for your Alaskan adventure. Two-night minimum stay requirement

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2005
About the owner: Bill first came to Alaska from Seattle in 1980, and has lived here on and off ever since. In 1989 he worked as a hot-air balloon pilot, flying 12 passengers at a time on early-morning flights over the magnificent savannahs of the Maasai Mara, and Taita Hills in Kenya. Jacqui has extensive travel experience having studied languages at university in UK and living in Germany and Italy teaching English. She speaks fluent German. An almost 9-year career with Britain's largest tour operator followed where she worked in Yugoslavia, Austria, Kenya, and Barbados. It was during her second tour in Kenya that she met Bill who swept her off her feet! In 1990, Bill flew big balloons in Germany before returning to the US with a wife in tow. We have lived in the Mat-Su Valley since 1991 and have twin daughters. We love the peace and quiet and mountain scenery of the Valley. We look forward to acquainting our guests with some of its sights.
Why the Owner Chose Palmer:
We already lived in the area and were looking for a good piece of land to build a house! We bought 25 acres and built our house in 2001, then decided it was such a beautiful, quiet, yet central spot, and built the cottage in 2004/5.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Self-contained unit provides privacy and independence. No need to eat out all the time, you can come and go as you please, without disturbing anyone. Ideal for the adventurous or business traveler.
