We just returned from staying 6 nights here. There was my husband and I, in our 60s, our son and daughter-in-law, in their 30s and their 2 little ones, ages 4 & 1. The house has nearly everything one could want or need for short term stays, it was so close to Fisherman's Wharf, where we fed a couple of local seals some fish; and to downtown, we walked everywhere, even though we had 2 cars. The house has all the character of a very old place, right down to the squeaky floors and doors. (we think a little oil on the door hinges would help, especially because we were trying to be quiet on our late night visits to the bathroom,). :-) The only real "downfall" we found was the lack of seating on the main floor, other than the dining room chairs and one occasional chair. However we still managed to have our grandson's first birthday with about 25 people in attendance. We were very happy and comfortable in the house (great beds and pillows too) and would definitely stay again.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, age 55+, families with teenagers.

We just got back from a lovely 3 day stay in Victoria after an Alaskan cruise. We were traveling with my brother and his wife and my mom and her husband, so we needed three bedrooms. This home was perfect for that reason. It was difficult to find three bedrooms within walking distance to downtown. The house is a charming historical home situated 2 blocks from Fisherman's Wharf and about .6 of a mile from the Inner Harbour. We did end up renting a car, as my mom and husband can't walk very far. But I would say that you DO NOT need a car if you wanting to see just Victoria. ( Butchart Gardens is a 20 min drive and should not be missed) We were able to walk to the market and pick up some breakfast items and the neighborhood was safe and well kept. The house is updated nicely with a 1/2 bath and laundry downstairs and a gorgeous shower and claw foot tub upstairs. The beds were super comfortable and the linens and towels high quality. The caution that I would make is the stairs are narrow and short. Meaning that your foot doesn't fit on the riser........so you need to be careful going up and down. My mom was a little nervous using them. But other than that. Great stay, Dave was super easy to work with, and the price was right. We will definitely be back. Be sure to check out Smith's Pub and Bartholemews. Smith's had great pub food( Butter chicken, lamb burger and fish and chips were awesome) and Bart's had great music. The service was superb at both.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers.

My wife and I with a few friends stayed in this lovely home. It is tastefully furnished and worked well with the historical charm of the home. This 100 year old house is not only beautiful but has a very cozy feel to it. The bran new kitchen and two bathrooms offer all the modern amenities with a luxury feel. It was exciting to stay here and enjoy this luxury and it was a very nice break from our normal every day lives. The location is superb as you can walk into town, fisherman's wharf and Ogden Point. We would highly recommend staying hereRecommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

This is a charming old home in a great location in this wonderful Canadian provincial capital. You walk ten minutes and you are in the center of Victoria, with its Parliament building and historic hotels. Just two blocks away is Fisherman's Wharf. The neighborhood itself is made up of some very nicely maintained Victorians, a few that are showing their age, along with a smattering of modern apartments. The home itself was cozy, but in need of a better cleaning when we arrived, the upstairs bathroom especially. On our trip through the Pacific Northwest we stayed at two other VRBO properties in Ashland, Ore. and Vancouver BC, and this one wasn't quite up to the level of the other two, unfortunately.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Thank you for your kind words about our vacation home. We regret the lack of cleanliness and have notified the cleaning staff and are confident this will not reoccur. Although this is not a new facility, this 100 year old home offers a charm and warmth that a lot of people prefer to a new facility. I would disagree that things are run down. We have a new kitchen and two bathrooms that are of new construction and fit well with the rest of the house. judging by all of our 5 star reviews to date, people seem very happy with their stay and the condition of the house. we appreciate all comments and welcome you back in the future Thank you Dave and Cindy

My family and I stayed that this home during our week in Victoria 2011 for my daughter's wedding. It is a beautfiul home, very comfortable with everything you could want - comfortable beds, a great shower, fully stocked kitchen. The home is close to Fisherman's Wharf (a must see), the inner harbour and Ogdon Point. There is a grocery store near by. We loved sitting in the garden when the weather allowed, it was unseasonably cold for that time of year. We loved staying in this home and would highly recommend it to anyone.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, families with young children, age 55+, families with teenagers.

I and two colleagues stayed at James Bay Manor for 2 weeks. We had a great time. The house was charming. The kitchen was delightful -- newly renovated and well stocked. The bathroom was also newly renovated and I really enjoyed soaking in the large 4 clawed bathtub. Dave and his wife were helpful. The downstairs living area has a large dining room table (though no couch) that we used both for eating and working. Upstairs there is a small TV area with a comfy couch.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at "James Bay Manor" The house is as advertised and Dave and Cindy were very hospitable and accomodating. It was our first time in Victoria, and I could not think of a better location to stay. You were close to almost everything, and yet still in a very quiet neighbourhood. As you can see from the map, you can walk 2 to 3 blocks in 3 directions and be at the waterside. We had 5 young kids with us (ranging from 2 to 10 yrs) and had no problem walking to the Fisherman's Wharf, the Inner Harbour, The Whale Watching and Floatplane Tours, the Royal Museum and even the Bug Zoo (very cool, the kids loved it!!!) You could easily spend 4-5 days there with very little need for a car (perhaps only for groceries or trips to the Butchart Gardens). I would not hesitate to stay there again. I would highly recommend this house. Much better than staying in a hotel, especially with kids.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

My extended family and I had a wonderful 2 days at this historical house. It was everything that was advertised, and more! The house was clean, spacious, and welcoming. We had 4 adults and 2 children and didn't feel cramped at all. Before we went we were apprehensive about there being just 1 bathroom. However it turned out that there is actually a half bath downstairs that was still under construction at that time (July 2010), but already functional. The free wi-fi & local telephone was a nice touch. My kids *loved* the piano, and the nice entertainment nook upstairs. In terms of location, this is in a nice quiet neighbourhood with "real" families around, which we liked. It is close enough to the inner harbor area that you feel connected. But it is definitely not an easy stroll to the inner harbor, especially if you have kids. So we were forced to drive to the inner harbor area and hunt for parking which wasn't the most fun. So if your top priority is that you can walk easily back & forth to the inner harbor area (example: you don't have a car) you should probably pick one of those highrise hotels around the waterfront. If you are flexible on this, then this house is *great*. Last but not the least, Dave (owner) was very helpful, both in terms of prompt responses to all our questions as well as accomodating in terms of schedule (we had to delay our checkout). We will definitely go back here on our future vacations to Victoria!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, families with teenagers.
