Brookfield house description

The Fork Shop has a spectacular site right next to Brookfield's famous floating bridge with the advantage of seclusion and lake frontage, a waterfall, and a meandering stream. Renovated in 2002 and updated again in 2009, the interior boasts a gourmet kitchen with commercial appliances, a windowed wall overlooking the lake, waterfall, and stream, and 5 bedrooms. The bottom floor, custom built to highlight the waterfall, has a pool table and reading area.

Pond Village is one of New England's most attractive spots. The entire village, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, also has two B & B's, and one of Vermont's best restaurants. Just 10 minutes off of Interstate 89, many of Vermont's most visited sites are within one hour. It's ideal for family reunions and groups of friends.

Fishing was great! We caught rainbow trout, large mouth bass, bluegill, and perch. Sunset pond was beautiful, great swimming and the small Vermont atmosphere was great. Nearby Allis State Park offers a challenging hike but perfect for the adventurous type. Go up the Fire Tower, absolutely a gorgeous vista.

Our family gathered at this roomy, comfortable...LAKEFRONT house for the weekend. Some of us stayed at our brother's home...others fell asleep to the sounds of the waterfall!! There was PLENTY of room for us to gather for weekend activities...swimming, jumping from the bridge, fishing, canoeing, playing pool!! HUGE kitchen with fantastic table that comfortably sat 12 of us! Lots of spaces in this house...pool table for teenagers downstairs...giant living room with couch and 2 tables... for board games, visiting.... lots of beds for napping. The outdoor deck (atop the waterfall...looking at the lake) has 6 comfy old Adirondack chairs...we brought our camp chairs and sat 12 adults...happily...late into the night. Jane, the owner, checked to be sure we had everything we needed. We did! Lots of fluffy towels, comfortable beds, touches of beautiful old linens (real linen!) Our family has already started to plan next summer's stay at this great house!! Thanks very much!!

We booked our stay a year in advance with Jane who graciously gave us an on the spot tour of the property while we were vacationing at another property. We fell in love with the location, uniqueness of the home and Jane's friendliness. We were 5 adults and 6 children and with a little creative thinking managed to get everyone a place to sleep. Eager to spend 4 days just relaxing, the Fork Shop offered us that and more. The children had a dock to moor their kayaks and boats to and we had a deck to watch them from. We swam, jumped off the bridge and explored the pristinely beautiful area of Pond Village. The Fork Shop had everything we needed. The gourmet kitchen provided a space for family meals and the huge round table was used for eating together and game night. The sound of the waterfall adjacent to the house lulled us to sleep every night. While evenings and weekends can get busy at the bridge, the locals were friendly and accommodating. The house was clean and stocked with linens upon arrival with an order to come to Jane with anything else we might need. The children had the time of their lives and made memories that are unique and magical that only a property like this can deliver. Rife in history, the Fork Shop and Floating Bridge are sure to cater to the needs of romanticists, family reunions, wedding guests, or girls/boys weekends alike. We had the best time and we were sad to leave, it truly felt like OUR home during our stay. As a photographer, the home and the area provided photo opportunities galore, it's truly eye candy, inside and out. My ONLY suggestions: ask for the WIFI password and directions to local stores as soon as you check in, bring fans if staying in the summer, despite being on the water the nights were uncomfortably warm without them, be prepared to have people peeking in the windows at random times, while never a threat, the first few times can be unsettling, stock up on food (including condiments/spices) and drinks before arrival as the closest supermarket is 25 minutes away. Jane, thank you SO much for the memories, we had the most amazing time and have GREAT photos we'd love to share with you (but we never got an email address for you!!). Thank you for the best weekend EVER!!! We miss you already!!

Fork Shop is a wonderful place to go for a summer getaway. Our group consisted of eight people, representing three generations, and there was more then enough space (bedrooms, bathrooms etc.) for all. The kids enjoyed the pool table and lake activities while others enjoyed the time for more quiet pursuits. The owner was nearby, very helpful, and responsive to any need. What is so unique about Fork Shop is it's incomparable setting. Where else can you relax by the lake and have the silence broken only by the sound of a water fall? It was a wonderful vacation, and we hope to return.

A group of ten old friends met in Brookfield and stayed 4 nights at the Fork Shop. What a marvelous experience, including a -20 degree night and morning with crystal clear skies and a warm hearth. We are all cooks, and so enjoyed cooking together in the open style kitchen. With five separate bedrooms, 4 and a half baths, we were set up for all kinds of needs. The home owner was just across the street , in the Green Trails Inn (Inn keeper) and this made the small details like cross country trails, how to get internet access, where to find outside sources of entertainment ( which we didn't need but were available nearby) a breeze. Did we mention that we had ideal skiing and snowshoeing right in Brookfield ? And the community trails and trail keeper were friendly about getting us started. Over all, an amazing stay for the dead of winter !

Owner response: What a nice group of friends. They have known each other for 30 years, and get together once a year. This year it was at the Fork Shop. It was great to see them take advantage of the winter skiing conditions, even with astonishingly cold weather. Everyone cooked, so the gourmet kitchen was well utilized. I so enjoyed having them as guests, and to see how well they utilized the Fork Shop and village.

Had a great time at this home. Came for a weekend in January to go skiing and stayed here with several other ppl including kids. All had a great time at the house. Spacious, beautiful kitchen with everything you need, nice downstairs with pool table. Gorgeous views and plenty of outdoor space. Only negative was for some reason there were alot of flies. Would definitely go back and recommend to others.

We stayed at the Fork Shop in the Fall of 2009 and it was absolutely spectacular! The house is HUGE and the location cannot be beat. You are litterally steps away from the famous VT floating bridge, and on not only a picturesque lake but you have two waterfalls outside your door and a steam on your own piece of forest to explore and play in. The renovations on the 1700s building are very nice, open and modern without sacraficing the historic nature of the building. Jane's cooking is wonderful (would love to buy some of her cook books) as we had been told it would be, given her fame as a cook book author. She is a wealth of information about where to go and find antiques and other fun things to do in the area. Also, for dinner Ariel's Restaurant is litterally accross the street, and this was one of the best dinners we had had in a LONG time, and her desserts are to die for! I understand that she also used to teach pastry making at a university. If you love Top Chef you will LOVE the creativity of this food! Overall this is a great place to stay, and would be perfect for a large family getaway in any season. The leaves were brilliant when we got there, and then it snowed half way through our week, and both made for fantastic exploration and photographs! Worth every penny and then some, and we will be back!

About the owner: Owner Jane Doerfer writes cookbooks and owns two inns: Green Trails in Brookfield and the Pelican Inn on Dog Island in Florida.

                  Why the Owner Chose Brookfield:
I have been coming to central Vermont for more than 30 years. It is remarkable because it has resisted the kind of overdevelopment of many vacation areas. It keeps a wonderful mix of culture and agriculture.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Fish, swim, walk and just sit and stare at the lake.
