A Gorgeous and Delightful Get-away

What a wonderful long weekend! I have rented a lot of houses from VRBO in northern California over the past decade or so, and this house is definitely one of my all time favorites. It offers beautiful modern architecture in a truly magical location nestled under the redwoods. We had a wonderful time enjoying the location, walks in the redwoods and wandering around the surrounding countryside. Tucked between Sebastopol and the sea, this house is a great launching pad for exploring western Sonoma, one of the great and barely discovered gems of California. It is also a perfect home away from home for dog owners. Our huge hounds loved the fenced in backyard. Leslie is a perfect hostess as well, and provided for our every need. We will definitely be visiting here again, and I can't wait!

Delovely

I’m not much for doodling comments in guest books, but we just spent a wonderful, relaxing week at the Magical Redwood Retreat and I think others should know. The Retreat is situated in a very quiet area between Sebastapol and Occidental in Sonoma County. Rain is unusual and unexpected in May but the two days we experienced past easily. The Retreat has large glass windows to watch the rainfall in the surrounding redwood forest, and with the wood stove, some selected books, a dvd player, and a fully equipped, modern kitchen we were happy and snug. Then the sun came out and it was glorious. We had several days of bike riding along the Russian River, hiking in nearby Armstrong Redwood State Park, and wonderful dinners in neighboring Occidental and Graton. Throughout this time, our host was concerned about our comfort and generous with ideas and advice about the area. If you get a chance, and have a yearning to relax, you won’t go wrong with the Magical Redwood Retreat.

Glorious, peaceful retreat

Date of Stay: 10/01/10 Review Submitted: 10/04/10

I am an academic with small children and need protected time to get away and write. This home has provided many a much-needed respite from the demands of daily life to provide the peace, solitude, and focus necessary to write productively... and even make it fun. The redwoods are the perfect writing muses. The house is gorgeous, beautifully and simply decorated, with all the (high quality) amenities one would need and more. The surrounding property of redwoods is perfect for relaxing amidst redwoods, taking in some sun on the surrounding decks or unwinding in the hammock. This is also the perfect family spot, providing a warm and homey ground from which to launch our favorite activities of running and biking along the country roads, hiking on the trails amidst rolling vineyards in the late afternoon sun, picking blackberries in late fall, wine tasting, enjoying the local fare at the bakery or in nearby Graton (ask Leslie for all the local secrets), having a massage at the local spa (divine)... The list goes on. No matter the season, this home and the surrounding sonoma wine country provide such incredible beauty as the beginnings of rest and rejuvenation from the world. Be warned: it can be (very) hard to leave...

Beautiful Setting

This home was a wonderfully relaxing setting with a fabulous kitchen and beautiful decks. The house felt easily large enough for the five of us and very comfortable. We really loved the cork flooring, beautiful woods and lighting. Everything was clean, in great condition and the owner was very helpful with questions. First morning breakfast was provided--great food! It was easy to have our dog and we enjoyed the treats and toys. Lovely vacation--would definitely recommend!

A place to unwind

First I want to start by saying the pictures do not do this property justice. Once you drive through the gates it is like you are in another world. 10 acres of beautiful redwoods. I hiked to the top of the hill for meditation and laying in the sun every morning. The house has an open floor plan with a view of the forest from every square inch of the house so you feel like you are outside even when you are inside. Went to Wild Flour bakery and had some of the best homemade organic bread I have ever had. There is a little town called Graten less than 15 minutes away that has is a wonderful tea house and Gallery and cute little organic grocery where you can get fresh organic produce. I personally love to cook and this kitchen is made for cooking. The owner is very pleasant and accommodating. The house is filled with green materials which was very important to me. No toxic cleaning products or fragrances. The cork floors are warm and inviting and the bed was so comfortable I wanted to know what kind of bed it was so that I could buy one for my own home. The Russian River, Bodega Bay, and Guerneville are close by also so if you can pull yourself away from the property there is plenty to do. Very Romantic (Smile). I live in Washington DC but this property calls me to stay there at least once a year, wish I could do more. I would definitely recommend to friends and family. It is a great spot for a few friends to get together and have a girls weekend. And depending on the time of the year Jazz on the River is happening. I think that will be my next visit, Jazz on the River with a couple of my friends. This spot was all good there is nothing negative that I can say about it.

Quiet and relaxing

We really enjoyed our two weeks at this super private and quiet country property. From any room in the house it feels like you have the whole forest to yourself. The photos don't do it justice. We stayed here in February to attend the Tour of California. The weather was mild and everything was lush and green. We really enjoyed using the fireplace. The owner was very friendly and recommended some great local bike routes, walking treks, restaurants and massage. Organic food is easy to come by in the area (a big plus for us). We did some great rides from the house and also put the bikes in the car and rode up to some of other wine valleys for more great riding. You definitely need a car for this property but everything you need is on-site...washer/dryer, full kitchen, internet. We made a few trips into town for supplies, but mainly cooked and relaxed at the house. Lots of shade - we thought this would be a great place to escape the summer heat. We stayed in the downstairs bedroom which is very private and has it's own gas fireplace. The bed and linens were comfortable. The bathroom was nice. The house is clean and modern with a lovely open design. Comfy couches and a nice TV set up.
