Whale and Heather. The most aptly-named vacation home on Mendocino Coast Reservation's (and VRBO's) roster. The expansive Pacific Ocean view offers you a ringside seat for the passing migration of the fabled Gray Whales, set against the foreground of a manicured, multi-colored heather garden; one of the most beautiful on the North Coast and enjoyed by gardening aficionados from around the world.
As an added garden feature, there's a private latticework greenhouse just beyond the main house where you can relax, enjoy the surroundings and read a good book; or, just plain daydream. The greenhouse is surrounded by the restorative life force of all things green and growing.
Located on Todd's Point, Whale and Heather is close to all of the services and attractions in nearby Fort Bragg and Mendocino, yet its close proximity to the ocean provides an easy-going atmosphere of peace, and quiet, and residential privacy.
Historic Mendocino Village is just a short drive south via scenic Highway One, the Pacific Coast Highway. To the north, beyond quaint Ft. Bragg and the world famous Skunk Train, you will find coastal sand dunes, beaches, state parks and numerous outdoor activities including canoeing, kayaking and beach combing. There is even wine tasting at the Pacific Star Winery. Also located nearby is the world renowned Mendocino Coast Botanical Garden - highly recommended for all lovers of plants and flowers!

My girlfriend and I stayed here for several days in July-- we were taking a drive down to California from our home in Oregon, and wanted to explore the Mendocino Coast-- and we found the home perfectly comfortable, with beautiful views of the ocean out of the kitchen window and sun room. Also, my girlfriend-- who is a garden freak-- went nuts over the lovely heather garden. It turned out to be a perfect location from which we could explore Ft. Bragg-- a charming old logging town that is MUCH less touristy than Mendocino-- as well the coastline, which we enjoyed by taking bicycle day trips, as well as walks through the stunning coastal scenery, from as far north as Westport, to as far south as Elk. Our only regret is that we didn't bring along a bunch of friends-- the home is quite large enough to host a larger group-- maybe this Thanksgiving?Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers, people with disabilities.

My wife and I stayed at this property - it was our first time on the Mendocino Coast; and, the house turned out to be very comfortable and relaxing. We especially enjoyed the sunroom with its amazing views of the ocean. While visiting, we took walks around Todd Point, which is the location of the home, and also at nearby beaches. We also rode on the Skunk Train. The weather was very pleasant - nice and cool! I would definately recommend this house. The kitchen was well stocked with plenty of pots and pans and one night we used the BBQ to cook a beautiful salmon we purchased at nearby Noyo Harbor. We are looking forward to returning hopefully sometime soon.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway, adventure seekers.

About the owner: The Whale & Heather House was build by our parents in the early 1980's. It initially served as a vacation destination for our family; however, later in our parents lives, it eventually became their place of retirement. Over the years, Mom and Dad developed a world renowned heather and succulent garden on their property. At the same time, they also were active/contributing members of both the Mendocino Coast Botanical Garden and the local and national chapters of heather societies. Many visitors, both domestic and international, have visited their garden to paint its beauty, study the plants and otherwise enjoy the surroundings. The attached photo is of our mother amongst some of her beautiful creations.

Mild climate, beautiful views... A unique coastal environment with easy access to the ocean and nearby coastal redwood trees. Also enjoyed is the remote North Coast lifestyle!

Pomo Bluffs State Park, offering outstanding ocean views and also serving as the southern entrance to Noyo Harbor, is just 2 blocks to the north of Whale and Heather. Our house is also in close proximity to high quality grocery and retail shopping. Pee-wee golf is a short walk away; and, Todd Point as a whole is a great walking neighborhood. Our homes extended garden serve as a painters paradise!
